Ted nodded toward the traffic light at his end. A truck driver had wanted to cut the wait just now. The man winced but Ted did not care. The driver knew better than to disobey traffic laws there in Kansas. He wouldn't be driving his truck for too long, the instant he did.

Elma thought about his beautiful pose by the window back there and her stomach tightened. She was not mad because he'd treated her less of herself. It was her growing sensations whenever he was near her, that bothered her the most about their working relationship.

"How's work coming on over there, Couz?" Teddy's voice hastily pulled Elma out of her reverie.

"Fine, I guess," she answered sincerely.

"You guess," Teddy repeated her last word to himself.
