Another Tuesday

(Late at night, at some random alleyway in New York City)

"Sheffield, I am in position," Reyes said through his earpiece as he walked slowly in a straight line while loading his shotgun with a few shells. He wore a dark-colored standard military attire with a black beanie covering his hair.

"Go to the door on your left" Sheffield stated overlooking Reyes from a nearby rooftop. She inwardly lamented her situation. Often missions went without a hitch, but something was dampening her sensing abilities. That made her need to move closer to the target to give Reyes as close as a layout as she could.

Reyes complied and warily scanned the insides of the building. He could only see the small dank corridor that he was currently traversing. He doubted a person above six feet could pass through it. The surroundings were silent, almost too silent.

"Field, they have set an ambush" he said while he fastened his shotgun prepared for the imminent conflict. After many years as a child soldier, Reyes developed a kin sense for danger. And this situation smelled of an ambush.

"Damn, give me a second" then she closed her eyes and focused on her quirk. Inside of her mind, she was traversing the building. Reaching where Reyes was at, after a few seconds she went ahead. Sheffield sensed 20 people and two dogs, all of them appeared to be pointing guns at the door.

"Reyes, there are 20 hostiles and two dogs, but I can only create a small window for you to come in." Sheffield said as she focused on the dogs. Inside the mind of the dogs, she implanted the order to attack the hostiles in 1 minute.

"Reyes, when I count to cero, you go in and eliminate as many hostiles as you can, leave the rest to Chtulu" Sheffield stated as she opened her eyes.

"10...9...8...7...6...5...4...3...2...1... GO!"

As soon as he heard the screams of the hostiles; Reyes activated his "Wraith Mode" and kicked the door open. He made the first shot, killing the poor sod at the back with kindness. Pum, chk, and ratatata were the only sounds that came out of the room. Reyes counted each kill he made; sadly, he didn't have enough rounds to end all of them. He was getting shot a lot, but thanks to his "Wraith Mode", most of the bullets faced right through him. He was still taking damage, but it was nothing that he would worry over.

The dogs proved to be a great initial distraction; unfortunately, they got gunned down for being an unknown. After all, the enemy could not have any wildcards in their field. They served their purpose to the very end; Sheffield could at the very least honor them by completing the mission without a hitch.

"Thirteen, Fourteen. Fuck I am materializing" Reyes began retreating as he threw a grenade near the remaining hostiles, but it didn't explode. He yelled, "Cthulu take over!!" and nopped out of there.

(After some minutes one goon lowered his guard)

"Fuck, the boss was right to set the ambush for that scrub." Said one of the hostiles as he got in a conversational mood. As no one replied to his attempt to lighten the mood, he looked at his surroundings, only seeing dead bodies and a lot of blood splattered all around the room. His colleague Al didn't make it if his half-blown head was any indication.

"It's sad how a lot of us died protecting something that wasn't even here." stated the same hostile

"Al died for nothing but a misdirect. We are all here risking our skin; while the boss hides in his cozy home with all the loot." Al's friend ranted, looking for support.

Unlike him, his colleagues were battle-hardened and were still wary. They found it suspicious that their assailant yelled for someone to take over when there was no one there. It also didn't help that the grenade that was thrown didn't explode as it was supposed to. Was it a distraction for their enemy to escape or was it something else?

"No matter," the substitute leader said as he came out of his cover and shot the defective grenade. He was surprised when it exploded. "So it was a malfunction". The rest of the men followed soon after and approached the bodies. The scene was quite gruesome, many of their colleagues were missing appendages and had many painful-looking wounds. This should not have happened, they were prepared. To think that the supposedly trained dogs would be the thing that would fuck up their ambush.

As they searched the corpses for ammo and valuables they lowered their guards and discarded the already looted bodies at the back of the room.

"AHHHHH!!" suddenly a scream was heard. The men turned their heads to see one of their colleagues being impaled through the heart by some white humanoid-looking thing. After the victim wailed a little more he coughed some blood and moments later died.

The men were stunned; they didn't expect the enemy to be among them all along! "Shoot!!" the leader yelled as he began to shoot at the aberration that had killed his subordinate. One by one, people died as they were impaled in different places by Cthulu's razor-sharp nails. Only screams were heard as the guns ran out of ammo.

After Cthulu's killing spree, only the "Leader" remained. All according to plan...

"Where is the loot?" Cthulu said in an ominous tone while raising the leader through his impaled arm.

The leader spat on his face while looking him in the eye and said "Fuck You Monster"

"No worries, I'll have you singing in no time" Cthulu said with a big smile as he punctured the leader's femur. As he tortured the Leader, one could see him with a wide grin, relishing on the fact that he was going to get what he wanted at the end of it. After all, he wasn't called the "Master Spy" for nothing. He was proficient in assassin techniques, diversions, disguises, and psychology. Arguably the most terrifying thing one could be proficient at.

(Several Minutes Later at the Rooftop with Sheffield)

"What took you so long!" Reyes, half whined-half stated. After having to wait on the rooftop doing nothing for half an hour he became mildly irritated.

"You know that making them sing always takes time" Cthulu said exasperatedly while typing something on his phone.

"Well... at least we are done here, let's go and let Phantom and Kurta do their part" Sheffield said urging her companions to return home, so she could arrive "home" earlier and binge-watch her drama/romance series.

With nothing of importance left to do, the companions made their way back to base while Reyes whined all the way.

(On a Penthouse of a highrise building in New York City)

Phantom held Kurapika in his arms as he flew up towards the Penhouse from below. Dan made himself and Kurapika intangible in order to pass through the physical hindrances and remain unseen.

"Okay, Kurapika, keep on the lookout while I try to open this Quirk-Proof Safe" Phantom said while Kurapika nodded.

Phantom started typing the code that Cthulu sent him. There was a saying in their team "If the information was sent by Cthulu it must be correct". Cthulu was exceptionally thorough in his information gathering, often having an uncanny ability to know if a person is lying or not. He was for all intents and purposes, the leader of the group. He had the most experience and always seemed to know what to do. Thou he has changed over the years, losing himself in this violent world we call home.

Pi...Pi...Pi...Pi...Pi...Pi...Pi...Pi...Pi...Pi...Clank

"It's open." Phantom said as he retrieved the documents that were the main objective of the mission. Seeing that Phantom was about to close the safe without stealing the bonuses; Kurapika in his infinite need to prepare for the worst-case scenario abandoned his post and began loading the backpack he brought with all the other valuables he could.

Thanks to his blunder, they were found by a guard doing his usual round. Fortunately, Kurapika's Judgement Chains were able to make the guard swear an oath on his life to not divulge their information in any shape or form, or his chain would pierce his heart and end him.

If it were up to Kurapika, he would have ended the man because loose ends always find a way to bite you in the ass; luckily for the guard Phantom was there. Dan Phantom was a softie, and the rest saw him as the unofficial cute innocent little brother of the group. He didn't like conflict and hated working for the association. He didn't like killing and doing damage in general. The most he acceded to do was to be in infiltration/information gathering assignments. Phantom, if given a choice, would probably spare every enemy he had.

"Phantom, stop daydreaming and get us out of here" Kurapika said as he saw Phantom having one of his existential episodes.

"Ohhh...Ok" He responded as he grabbed Kurapika who was holding the loot, and faced out of there.
