Friendship

CHAPTER NINE

A week later after being discharged, Jim was granted a week leave. Joan checked on him at least 3 times every week.

They became quite good friends. They tried out new recipes and cooked, they went to karaoke and tried out songs with their cracky voices. Above all, Joan knew how to play PS. What a great friend she is, Jim thought.

Her smile was forever a sparkle. Jim never knew Joan could be such an Angel, a playful one at that.

"Can I ask you for something please?" Jim asked Joan, looking at her with rapture.

"Okay... What is it?" Joan asked.

"Don't freak out... Please? Jim begged.

"As far as you don't ask me to do something..." Joan was interupted immediately with Jim's lips on hers. It was a long passionate kiss from Jim's deepest heart. Joan went blank. Defenseless. Then she realized that Jim loved her so much.

"I want you to close your eyes and open them when I ask you to" Jim continued.

Joan closed her eyes as instructed with traces of smiles.

After a minute of silence.

"You can open them now" Jim said and Joan slides her eyes open. She saw Jim kneeling down.

"Marry me Joan" Jim asked with a lot of mixed feelings. Actually, the ring is a 14-carat gold.

Uncontrollable tears ran down Joan's eyes as she was confused about the whole thing.

"Well erhm... Jim... I well this is unbelievable. How long have you been practicing this?" Joan said with lots of tension.

"Yes?" Jim asked.

"No... Actually, I don't think marriage is meant for me... Sorry to break it to you" Joan cried out.

But... Did I do anything wrong? Why? I guess I shouldn't have... I'm sorry please" Jim said and almost regretted his actions.

"Come on No! You are a good friend. I appreciate your honesty and courage but I'm sorry, I can't marry at this time okay?" Joan said.

"I've always wanted you. It took me a lot of courage to do this... But I will have to respect your decision" Jim said with tears almost dropping from his eyes.

"Whoops! I have to go now... Well erhm... I have to go check up on my dad" Joan said just to escape the tension.

"I don't regret my actions. I love you Joan since the first day we met" Jim concluded.

"Alright bye for now" Joan said trying to avoid Jim's eyes. Jim watched her as she drove out of his yard.

Around 11:00pm in Joan's apartment, she couldn't sleep. She had been thinking and soliloquizing.

"Why me? I've not been this soft towards any man in years... I could see love in his eyes. I guess the young man will be so worried...I guess I shouldn't have left him in the dark just like that? Poor Jim! I wish I met him when I was open to love. Life isn't fair. God help me. How will he handle it?" Joan said with tears in her eyes.
