"Are you ready?" Jace's voice echoed in the background. I stared at the clock, dressed like one of the waitresses in the event held by Phoenix, where our targets were present.

I carried the tray and served the guests.

It was a great party where the theme was a masquerade. Hence, everyone was wearing a mask, and my face was not in public view.

The smell of wine and perfume, elegant music, and fancy dresses reminded me of the life my parents didn't want me to live.

"No funny business," I teased, distracting myself. I can't be swallowed by my somber memories of my parents and make myself suffer in the midst of a mission.

Jace chuckled.

We didn't talk about what happened that night. Other than briefly agreeing not to bring it to the table, we pretended it never happened, but I resorted to teasing him.

And he would only chuckle at my attempt; after all, he was the one who kissed me.
