Chapter 23: Meeting Chase

“Because I first noticed a slight movement from where I was between the trees, and when I arrived at the lake, I only saw fresh footprints and no person,” Julietta replied. “They ended right in front of the lake. They weren’t anywhere else.”

“So, you saw actual human footprints?” Raine asked, leaning forward with his eyes narrowed in concern.

“Yes, I did,” Julietta responded. She wondered why he would be so interested in this particular story. “I eventually wrote it off as my imagination,” she concluded.

“That’s not a safe option in this situation,” Raine responded.

“What do you mean?” Julietta asked as she munched on the last of her hamburger.

“Pretending that something does not exist is dangerous and unwise,” Raine replied as he rose from his chair. “That’s when she strikes.”

“Are you talking about Urella?” Julietta asked in concern.

“Yes, only her,” Raine replied. “I have learned that one should never underestimate someone who looks harmless.”
