Chapter 61: The Lightning Ceases

“I’ve already spoken to one of you kids earlier this evening,” Mildred responded when she heard Vernicia’s voice and realized that she was a teenager. “What is the emergency?” Mildred asked.

Vernicia was only too relieved that Mildred’s campaign manager had agreed to put the call through. She was not going to waste a minute.

“We hope that you know the phone number of a certain businesswoman?” Vernicia replied. “There’s something important that she needs to know about. It’s a matter of life and death.”

“Life and death?” Mildred asked. “Are you sure about your facts?”

“Yes, I definitely am and Mrs. Urella Green is the only person who can help us,” Vernicia responded. “The situation is too sensitive to involve the police. Will you please give me her phone number?” Vernicia pleaded. She was not going to accept “no” for an answer.

Julietta noticed Jimmy where he was standing, staring at the wolf as well. She cast a brief look in Sheila’s direction and climbed out of the van.
