Ambush

Calvin didn't have the time to look at the system alerts because he might get attacked while he's distracted. He looked around warily trying to find where the enemy is.

Few minutes passed by and nothing happened. No arrows, no magics, not even a single soul appeared and tried to attack him which made him confused.

'Is there really no enemy? Then where did that bonus damage come from?' He wondered.

'Maybe its something that I did unknowingly? Well only one way to find out.' Calvin thought and finally he reads the system alerts.

[You have dealt a deadly injury to target! Target suffered instant death!]

[You have defeated a Black wolf! Gained 7 exp!]

[You have defeated a Black wolf! Gained 7 exp!]

[You have defeated a Black wolf! Gained 7 exp!]

[You have gained the Mastery, Dual Wielding!]

[You have gained 1 agility!]

"Ehhh?" Calvin muttered in confusion when he saw the first alert he received.

"Turns out it was this all along. This game is really unique in a very good way. Wow." Calvin said with amazement as he liked the game more and more. Out of all of the features of Genesis, this is quite possibly the best one he ever liked.

Though its possible that this concept applies to players as well, he didn't mind it one bit. One thing he hates the most in games is for players to be a lot weaker than monsters or NPCs to the point that they need to team up just to kill one.

With this mechanic, it looks like such a notion of being able to solo kill bosses won't be impossible. He didn't forget the fact that on the later stages of the game, it would be hard to inflict this effect but he can already guess that there are more ways that can help a player get stronger to the point of being OP.

Just imagining the possibility of becoming OP made Calvin smile like an idiot as he imagined some exciting scenes that made his blood boil.

Calvin turned his attention to the rest of the alerts and read one by one. "Hmm... I'm close to leveling up. Just two more and I'll be level 3. The dual mastery and the agility is a nice bonus too. Nice."

[Dual Mastery - F]

Proficiency: 2%

Now besides the Dagger, Sickle, and Forging Mastery, he got another one which is Dual Wielding. He didn't know the whole purpose of this mastery thing yet since the system doesn't show any kind of bonus it provides in any stats.

But he did have a guess to what its all about. Probably its a way of the system to measure the mastery of someone and display it in numbers so its easier for a person to know how much they have progressed in a mastery.

He walked up to the corpses of the wolves and looted them. The total of coins he got from them is 20 copper coins. He also got some materials which are 3 wolf's fur and 5 wolf's claw.

Seeing that there were no more loot, Calvin sighed in frustration. "Damn the drop rate of equipment is shit. Even now I haven't got a single one yet."

Calvin sat down behind a bush to hide and rest and to recover his hp and mana before continuing on grinding.

Since he didn't have anything better to do, he checked his status window to see his progress.

Calvin smiled in satisfaction seeing the boost in his stats and the additions of skills and masteries. Even if it was little for now, someday he'll make sure that his status will become more powerful.

Closing his status screen, he was about to open up the Internet and go to the forums for the game to check if there is anything interesting to see.

There were some players bragging about things like their loots but there were mostly guilds who are promoting their guild by sharing their achievements they have made so far.

Calvin remembered the world announcements that rang from time to time about some players from famous guilds managing to kill a boss. He sighed and said to himself, "Those guilds are really strong... But they're still annoying."

He smiled and continued looking in the forums. Finally he found some useful ones. There is a post regarding gaining attributes by training or fighting which he knows already. Some posts is also about the different kinds of professions with more details. One post even gives information about different kinds of monsters which Calvin find to be a lot helpful.

After spending some time looking at the forums, he learned a lot more things that will be helpful to him. But looking at his full hp and mana bar, he decided to stop for now and continue it later.

He stood up and wandered around the forest. After a few minutes of walking, he managed to find a pack of wolves again but this time there were four of them.

Calvin did the usual, sneaked up to them using Camouflage before launching a surprise attack. But this time he took a gamble.

He attacked two wolves during his surprise attack, both in the head. He tried to see if there is a special condition in triggering that instant death or is it just like real life where it would be normal for one to die immediately when their brain got damaged badly.

As expected, the two wolves died immediately which made Calvin smile as his theory turned out to be true while he was bathed in golden light as he leveled up.

The fight with the other two is easier since he had some experience already and in a few minutes he killed them as well.

He looted them and they dropped 28 copper coins and some more materials. Just when he was about to get disappointed, he saw from the corner of his eyes a glove with the same color with the wolf.

Calvin's eyes shined in excitement and he couldn't help but say to himself. "Fucking finally an equipment dropped."

He walked quickly towards it and right as he was about to pick it up, he heard a rustling sound behind him followed by a roar.

He felt chills and goosebumps as he quickly turned around, ignoring the gloves, and what he saw made his eyes widen in fear.

A few meters away from him is a red bear running towards him while roaring angrily and as soon as it got close it stood up revealing its height which is as tall as a human. It roared once again and swung its claws towards Calvin.

Calvin's mind blanked due to fear for a second before he forced himself to move. Without thinking of anything else, he attacked back with his sickle.
