It’s finally my day off from work and it’s scorching hot outside. My first instinct was to go to the beach to relax my mind and body. But another part of me was begging to go to the Hemingway café and work on my manuscript that is so close to being done. 


As much as I would love to lounge around in the sun all day and feel the cold, salty ocean water against my skin, I know I need to finish writing my novel so I can begin the editing process. It’s a reminder of why I’m here in Los Angeles. When I’m finished, there will be plenty of time to splash around in the ocean.


I place my empty breakfast plate in the sink and turn around to face Ava. She is reading a book at the kitchen counter with one of her legs pressed against her chest.


“Surely, that’s not a comfortable position,” I ask, making a face at her.
