21. Killing Two Birds

In a neighbourhood not too far away... Ritah hung up the phone and rolled her eyes. The things she did to ensure her job was covered… She glanced at her phone and saw she had 8 missed calls from Janet.

Ko mwana uyu arikudeyi futi (What on earth did this child want)? Did she not tell her kuti asaphoner pesepese, indava vana avaterere (she should not phone at any time she felt. Why didn’t these children not listen (this is a generalization like “kids these days”))?

Her phone rang again. Cursing under her breath she stretched across her leather sofas and answered her phone. “Chi-i iwe (What is it)?!” She asked not hiding her irritation. Janet was crying.

“Ah, ah, ah! Pfutseki, urikuchemeyi (Get lost! Why are you crying)?” Ritah sat up, “Wadzingwa (You got kicked out)? What did you do?... So she just kicked you out of her house for nothing?... Saka wakaiteyi (Okay, so what did you do)?”
