CHAPTER 01

In the deep south, at Longvill province, modernization was still coming in gradually. Half of the population were farmers, others were traders, government officials and few private companies and businesses.

Daphne 17 years, was one of the most beautiful girls in her community. She took peoples breath away when they see her. She believed she was in love with Eliot 23 years, and gave her whole heart to him.

She was still in grade 12 in high school. She sneeked out of the school during lunch break and went to Eliot's house to see him.

Eliot was living in their family house with his mother Tamar, 55 years, he was the only son and child of his mother. His father died when he was a little boy. He was a hard working young boy at the local brewery. He was at home when Daphne came.

Eliot was happy to see Daphne and he welcomed her and led her into his bedroom. Seeing that she came from her school during school hours to visit him, he felt it was a bad decision from her, even though he was happy to see her.

"are you not supposed to be in school by this time?" he asked her.

"yes am supposed to be in school." she answered him.

"why then did you come here?" he asked.

"something happened."

"what type of thing happened?" he asked, almost getting upset.

"I am pregnant." she declared.

"what did you say?" he asked her again in disbelief.

"I am pregnant." she repeated.

"why are you telling me about it? Don't you know who is responsible for it?" Eliot asked her in anger.

"this one you are asking me this type of questions, are you not the one who impregnated me?" she asked him, looking confused.

"how can! No, it's not me that got you pregnant." he denied her.

"Eliot you surprise me. How can you say you are not the one that impregnated me? Are you acting like this because of fear or what?" Daphne asked him, shocked at his attitude.

"what about all those guys you hang out with? One of them could have impregnated you." he accused her straight at her face.

"it's only you that I had sex with. So stop this drama and take care of your responsibility." she lashed at him.

"so you have the guts to insult me in my house? You even shout at me?" he asked her.

"why are you acting like this? You were sugar and love some minutes ago. Why are you behaving this way?" she asked him.

"questions!" he mocked her.

"you can deny this pregnancy forever, but you impregnated me, you can't change that." she said to him.

"have you told anyone about this pregnancy?" he asked.

"I have not told any one yet. You are the first person I am telling about it."

"you should abort this pregnancy. You should not keep it." Eliot said to her.

"I can't kill my first child." she replied to him boldly.

"are you a fool? Do you want to ruin your life? Don't you know if you keep this pregnancy, you will stop schooling." Eliot chastised her.

"I know what will happen to me, but I can't kill my baby because of my education. After giving birth, I can then return to school." she explained herself to him.

"who will look after you and your baby?" Eliot asked her.

"are you not working? Didn't you promise to take care of me? You assured me strongly that you would care for me and that was why I allowed you to touch me."

"I can't take care of you and your baby. You supposed to abort this pregnancy and save both of us this humiliation." Eliot tried to coerce her.

"aborting this pregnancy is not an option. Think about other better choices to solve this situation." Daphne has already made up her mind before coming to see him.

"stop acting like a child, there's no other better option to solve this problem. I don't even know what your father will do to me when he finds out you are pregnant. Am warning you for the last time, let's abort this pregnancy." he tried to reason with her.

" I will not abort this pregnancy. I hate abortion. " she insisted.

" I don't love you to the extent of you bringing my first child into the world. "Eliot said to Daphne.

His words cut like a knife into her skin. She was shocked to hear those hurtful words from him.

" is that how it is? But you used your time, your money and your strength to convince me to be your girlfriend. You invested in me. "

" I only want to have sex with you. I don't want to have a baby through you."

"you won't abandon this pregnancy because it's the fruit of your sex drive."

"are you going to abort this pregnancy or not?" he asked her, not mindful of what she said.

"I won't abort it." she still maintained.

"you should leave now, let me give serious thought to this whole thing. Make sure you don't tell anyone about this your condition until I see you tomorrow." he said to Daphne.

"stop being scared, you can take care of me and my baby." she said to him, trying to cheer him up.

"I have heard you, come and go back to school." he persuaded her.

"am not happy to hear from you that it's only sex that you want from me. It hurts." she complained.

"am so sorry to say such a thing, pardon me." Eliot forced himself to apologize just make sure she leaves.

"now am happy, I will see you tomorrow." she said to him.

"you don't have any problem, we will see each other tomorrow."

"I didn't even ask you about your mom, where is she? I didn't see her when I came."

"she went out to visit her friend."

"okay, see you tomorrow then." she stood up from his bed and left.

When Daphne left Eliot's home, he fell into his bed and his eyes were fixed on the ceiling. He was in distress and in confusion. Trouble have located him.

Daphne's father was a terror Eliot wanted to avoid at all costs. He could reason with Daphne's siblings, but he had no way of reasoning with Daphne's father. Eliot lay on his bed shaking with fright.

Daphne was on the street waiting for her girlfriend. She didn't go back to school, rather she stayed outside the school and waited for her girlfriend, Sophia.

She stood at the corner of the street and watched as her schoolmates and classmates went by in groups and some in singles. She and Sophia saw each other almost at the same time. Then Sophia walked to Daphne.

"I have been looking everywhere for you. Where did you go?" Sophia asked Daphne.

"I went to see Eliot." Daphne answered truthfully.

"so you can't see him after school hours?" Sophia asked her in anger.

"Sophia I am in trouble." she said to Sophia, fear written all-over her face.

Sophia was touched and also looked worried.

"what happened to you?" Sophia asked her.

"I am pregnant."

"Daphne why? Why should you? Oh my goodness!" Sophia was hurt and disappointed with Daphne.

"what do I know?." Daphne lamented her inexperience

"what do you know? Are you not wise enough? Then how did you get pregnant?" Sophia asked her.

"but I told you that I am not ready for this type of life. You persuaded me to accept Eliot's friendship because your boyfriend is his friend." Daphne tried to blame Sophia.

"please don't blame me for this mess." Sophia retorted.

"don't tell me am not wise enough, after all you know how exposed I am, you know me."

"it's okay, am sorry, am feeling bad because of this situation, what did Eliot say to you?" Sophia asked her.

"he wants me to abort it."

"that's a good option." Sophia said.

"I told him that I wouldn't abort it."

"are you a fool?" Sophia asked Daphne.

"no am not a fool." Daphne answered.

"do you want to ruin your life by yourself?" Sophia asked her.

"no I don't, but I can't and I won't abort this baby."

"did Eliot agree with you to keep the child?" Sophia asked.

"he couldn't convince me to agree to abort my baby. He wants to think of how to handle the matter. We will see tomorrow, and then I will know his final decision."

"are you going to tell your parents about your condition when you get home?" Sophia asked.

"Eliot said I should wait till tomorrow when both of us will see before I can now tell anybody." Daphne answered.

"that's okay, but if you will listen to me, agree with him and abort this pregnancy, and be useful to yourself." Sophia advised Daphne.

"I will not listen to you on this one ." Daphne maintained.

"come on, let's be going home."
