Silence

If one was to go and inspect the place of impact and was provided with excellent night vision, one could witness the source, the cause, which extinguished life that the humans knew of. But, it will be a long time before anyone knows it, that the sole reason was small.

His features were human-like - the body of a regular male which surprisingly survived the impact into the Earth. He had hair as dark as night around him, and skin as white as a skeleton. His face had defined features and one could call him relatively good-looking, except if it weren't for his expression.

One look would chase away anyone, as his eyes were red and burned like embers, emitting light as if they were lamps. Yet, it was still gentle compared to his facial features - they were twisted and turned causing the face of the creature to lose any shape or form of being even a bit likable. From each pore of his flesh, pure hatred and rage were oozing out, to the point where one could smell and taste them, as the creature exploded with a roar, letting all his livid rage out of his body. The same thing was what caused the demise of the human race because the creature was filled to the brink with detestation and loathing for the race which existed on this planet.

He reached into his body, enabling the new power to connect with every dead thing on the planet. The creature witnessed the state of the world as his new body was flying over the Earth - energy that these humans relied on was electricity and light. They harbored it and manipulated it to empower their machines, therefore was quite ideal for his needs - raising the dead was no small feat and it required a vast amount of energy. He could have used his own, he was powerful enough and ready to sacrifice most of his power and become less than he was if it meant the human race would perish. Yet, once he noticed electricity and knew of the amount of power it possesses, it was unnecessary to sacrifice himself. The creature decided to use their own source of progress against them and make it the driving force in their downfall. Not only will it serve as an instrumental in destroying them, at the same time he was correspondingly taking away the source they relied on the most to survive.

Focusing his magic on every power source available to him, the creature nearly instantly drained all the electricity he could have obtained, combining it with his own sorcery to drive it through the Earth, all the way to its core. It seemed as it lightning suddenly entered his body and exploded into the ground, and if one could see it, or sense magic, he would notice how it enveloped every living and dead creature on the planet. Where living beings were seemingly unaffected, everything dead was suddenly animated.

In the dirt where they lay, corpses and skeletons stretched their thin, decomposing limbs, as if each of them was awoken from a deep slumber. Their eyes were empty and white, like a dead fish, yet if you paid attention, small, extremely dim light could be noticed through the membrane or out of empty shells. After they were awoken, creatures were restless, moving and squirming around, which caused the solid earth a couple of meters above them to start breaking, as if it wanted them to get to the surface.

The creature was very satisfied with the number of soldiers he gained. After careful probing, he could feel that his sorcery resurrected every human corpse and skeleton which was not destroyed or decomposed over time passage of time. Every single one of the corpses had power almost equal to a fit, adult male human. And not only the human corpses have risen. Every dead animal corpse gained the power of the undead as well. Still, they were all static, waiting in their tombs, moving their ruined limbs around slowly. Maybe a more correct way to put it would be that now all of them were animals in a way. Zombies did not have a will of their own, feelings, or needs. The only thing they existed for was to obey the commands of their master.

Which is the reason they never left their tombs. The creature smiled viciously as he attempted to envision in his mind the pathetic efforts humans would come up with to attempt to survive.

"All of them are rotten to the core," the creature spoke silently. In the instant he opened his mouth, zombies ceased their movements, turning their eyes in the direction of their master.

"Humans call themselves many things, yet each one of them refuses to recognize and accept their own cruel nature and evil instincts. And they elevate themselves above anything and anyone else," the creature continued in a dangerous tone of voice. His face once more twisted as if mere thought of the human race was inflicting unbearable pain.

"They should all die. Kill every last one of those despicable things," he called them, giving the last instruction in almost a whisper, his eyes widened as if he was staring into the future.

His servants immediately came, rushing to obey his command. They left the dirt, with the will to destroy every living human being on the planet deeply embedded into their drive.

Out of the darkness, first came nothing. People gathered in the streets, talking to their neighbors and guessing the reasons nobody had any electricity.

"Maybe is a power outage," said the skinny man with a runny nose. He kept wiping his snots back, which the middle-aged woman and her husband, from the house next door did not miss. Slightly disgusted by his action the woman asked herself how can someone be so stupid not to notice that not only plugged-in devices died. Mobile phones, batteries, clocks, watches, and every single other electrical device stopped working at the exactly same time.

"It has to be an alien invasion, " spoke another man who wore glasses, with an excited expression on his face, cradling a laptop in his arms as if it was a newborn baby.

Even though the whole street was full of people, nobody wanted to say anything and enter into a discussion with the man with glasses.

Still, lack of input was what he was hoping for since nobody had any concrete evidence he was wrong.

"I mean, every electrical device died at the same time! I am sure some of you noticed it - I was just reading an article on my phone about new evidence supporting the theory of... well, regardless. I saw my phone, computer, and laptop going out of power at precisely the same moment. From all I can see, it was not just my electric devices, but from the whole street! IT MUST BE AN EMP bomb which...."

He continued to talk, and some people were even taking a slight interest in what he was saying, whereas others just exchanged glances over the fire they lit up on the street between their houses. Those looks clearly stated that the man with glasses was out of his mind, but nobody stopped him. Every person on the street had a theory and was preoccupied with their thoughts which is why they did not mind him talking. Except for one guy, a stern man in his forties who had a knife strapped to his belt and kept throwing annoyed glances at the guy with the glasses. It was the same guy who first left his house and made a fire in the street - a military veteran who was known to have a history of awkward encounters with the neighbors. From stalking a young couple that moved into the house next to his, setting a mine in his courtyard which blew up one of the neibourhood cats to other interesting events, everyone knew Mathias Clearwater by name and surname. Still, everyone called him Mat to befriend him, so he would stop considering them Russian spies or whatnot. Mat, nicely said, was known to be on the edge of his mind.

After he lit a fire, neighbors slowly gathered in the street, as it was the only source of light and even though every one of them considered Mat to be crazy, they knew he was a skilled soldier, so coming to hang out with him in was instilling comfort and feeling of safety into the hearts of terrified people. Many of them would like to return to their houses, yet at the same time are worried about potential events which might occur, therefore they decided to wait for news on the street, even at the late hour.
