Even after this shameful display of guilt and projection, Abel offered no consolation to the distraught Eden. His argument: there was no consoling the inconsolable. Yet, having said that, he shared a piece of advice that somebody dear to him used to say when he was little, hopeless like Eden curled up beside him. Whether an attempt at consolation or not, the words sounded very much like Abel’s own. The deeper hell, he had explained, to Eden still hiding his face, is the sole effective remedy to curing (or at least easing) one’s anguish.
