Chapter 18: Bestfriends

"The equipment has arrived, Alpha. Kaydon has decided to move them to the biggest room in the north wing of the house," Sphere told me when I asked if they had placed the equipment in the fitting room that the King sent here.

"Good," I replied to him without sparing him a glance. I was busy doing paperwork and trying to solve issues from last year's budget.

I was expecting him to turn around and leave after his report, but he remained standing at my table. I lifted my head and looked at him in confusion.

"Yes, Sphere? Do you still need anything else?" I asked him, adjusting my glasses on my eyes.

He became serious as he stared at me.

"Alpha, you know. You can't sacrifice yourself to the King for us. We can always work hard to get what we need," he told me.

Oh! Sphere took three months of leave from his duties to cope with the loss of his mate. He probably doesn't know what is happening between the King and me.

"It's fine, Sphere. We both got what we wanted on both ends. Besides, my priority is the pack. I want to give the best to all of you," I replied to him.

"What about your mate, Alpha? How will you explain this to him when he suddenly shows up?"

I heaved a sigh.

Of course, Sphere didn't know that I already didn't have a mate a long time ago.

"He will never come. I assured you that," I replied to him softly.

"Don't be so sure, Alpha. I'm sorry for sticking my nose into your private life, but don't be so sure," he stated.

I pushed my chair away from the table and then rested my head on the back of the chair. I started rubbing my temple and was battling over myself if I'll tell him about my mate or not. Sphere is the kind of guy who will ask a lot until his curiosity is filled in with answers.

"My mate won't come, Sphere. Or if he indeed comes, he will kill me like what he did to me years ago," I replied to him.

"What?" he asked in shock.

I looked at him and smiled bitterly.

"I never told anyone about my past. And since I know you better than anyone, I decided to tell you. My mate wanted me dead from the beginning. And when he found me five years ago, he almost killed me after rejecting me. And look—" She spread her arms wide. "I survived, end of the story. Our bond wasn't a fairy tale to be told."

A long silence intervened between us.

"I'm sorry to hear that, Alpha," Sphere said softly. After a long silence, he was the one who broke the silence between us.

"It's okay. Do you need anything?" I asked him.

"No— nothing, Alpha. I'll go now," he replied to me before turning around and walking out my office door.

I'm glad he survived the severed bond between him and his dead mate. But I'm sure he's still coping with his loss. I hope one day, he can find someone whom he'll cherish with.

I accidentally glanced at the calendar on my desk. Tonight, the moon will shine in the sky. It is the first time of the year that the red moon will come up in the night sky tonight. It was earlier than expected. It is said that the Lycan that was cursed to be enslaved by the moon will come out and will crave human flesh. Since the extinction of the Elite, children of the red moon will come out and feast on humans. And the human hunters will hunt them down.

The kingdom and the elders decided not to interfere in the war between the two races. Their priority is the welfare of innocent wolves. But I, on the other hand, left that responsibility a long time ago. I'm an Elite, but I decided to stop hunting them. Give me a break! This was the reason why my entire clan was wiped out.

Suddenly, my phone rang. I looked at the caller ID, it was an unknown number displayed on the screen, but I decided to answer it after a few rings.

"What the heck? Why did you pick up the call as soon as it rang?" I heard Stacey's voice from the other line.

"I'm sorry," I replied to her. "I thought you were someone else. You know me; I don't answer unknown phone numbers," I added.

"The heck with that! Where are you?" he asked me. I sensed something in her voice. It seemed like there was a hint of fear, and she was panting.

"I'm at the packhouse," I replied to her.

"Listen, Raven, you ne-"

Stacey couldn't continue to talk because of the background. I heard a growl, although it was faint.

"Where the hell is you !?" I implored her and got up from my seat.

"I was out gathering sources. But I ran into a cave of Lycan. Don't worry. I'll be alright," she replied to me.

"Are you fucking kidding me? They are Lycans! Where are you !?" I asked her as I changed my clothes. "Don't you dare end the call, Stacey!"

"I'm in my car right now, speeding up so they can't catch me," she replied. "But these bastards are fast runners," she added.

"Fuck! Tell me exactly where you are? What if one of them is a Red moon Lycan?" I told her after I fished my keys in my keykeeper.

"The moon isn't up yet, so I'll be safe. I can get to the human's city in a minute," she said. "Then they will stop chasing me."

"Shut it! Focus on driving, idiot!" I replied to her before connecting my phone to the wireless earphone I have. I proceeded to wear my helmet and ride on my motorcycle. "Hang in there," I said as I located her location on my cell's map.

I rode the motor to Stacey's location. She's a freaking daredevil.

The location is far from where I am now, and I decided to use my beloved bike because I need the speed and I don't need to wait in traffic. I had to find a space that would fit the motor that I could go through.
