Michael Corner was about to say something, when suddenly he heard the words from the next table, "Did you hear? Professor Lockhart is wandering around the Forbidden Forest!"
Michael Corner: ???
"- the Ministry of Magic found him locked in a self-driving car." A young wizard read aloud from the copy of the Daily Prophet in front of him.
"Is that the car?"
"Yes, the same car that flew into Hogwarts earlier in the term."
Hagrid, the Hogwarts Ranger, was patrolling the Forbidden Forest when he noticed something strange: a Ford car running wild on the outskirts of the Forbidden Forest with the long-lost Professor Lockhart inside. Ministry of Magic agents arrived and struggled to get Lockhart out of the car.
Although some of Lockhart's memories had been erased, those of tampering with others remained intact, so he was questioned by the Ministry and confessed to his crimes.
Well, the affair was such a big deal that Ministry officials, at Minister Fudge's urging, allowed a Daily Prophet reporter to observe the interrogation. Fudge had only one thing on his mind: to calm the commotion outside as quickly as possible. The fuss over Lockhart had disturbed the magical world, and even Ministry officials were talking about it. In the short walk from the lobby to his office, he had witnessed three altercations, all related to Lockhart.
The pressure was so great at the Ministry that Fudge was so distressed that he no longer cared about the truth. So when he found Lockhart, he did not hesitate to approve the use of Veritaserum, and got what he needed.
The next day, the Daily Prophet reported his trial on the sidelines, and the magical world was in an uproar: Lockhart's admirers could hardly accept the truth!
It was clear that even if Lockhart had made a spectacle of himself, he would still be extremely popular with his fans, who were irrational and instinctively believed in their idol and compensated him when he made mistakes.
For example, getting hit by an elf, because he didn't want to take the initiative and give the students a chance to work out; getting knocked down by a spell from Snape, because he was showing them how to do it; only reading from the textbook in class, and only writing a reading for an assignment. Nice! That's a plus for fans.
That's what Lockhart fans thought at first, but when the Daily Prophet followed up, Lockhart's true colors were revealed to his fans. Fans were stunned to discover that their idol, whom they adored, was a charlatan with no pretensions other than rhetoric.
They were outraged.
The daily report was reported in the morning, and the fans reacted so quickly that by noon they were in Diagon Alley, gathered outside Flourish and Blotts bookstore to denounce the way Lockhart had played with their feelings. Some of the middle-aged witches at the head of the group burst into tears and even burned their own copies of Lockhart's books in public.
The Ministry of Magic didn't bother, but cleaned up the streets after they had dispersed, as if nothing had happened. And Lockhart was also sentenced to 10 years in Azkaban for misusing the dememorizing spell. At last, Mr. Lockhart had a stable creative environment in which to devote himself to writing. Although his living conditions are not ideal, his readers are sympathetic: he can delay his work and wish Mr. Lockhart the best of luck in prison, writing such popular works as "Mein Kampf" and "The First Half of My Life."
The news that Lockhart had been found, that Lockhart had been interrogated, that Lockhart had been put in Azkaban, did not cause a stir among the young wizards: they had their final exams!
