Chapter Five

The moment the doctor told his prediction she wanted to cry it just couldn't be true she was only fifteen there was no place for a baby in her life. Not this soon she wasn't ready for such big responsibilities that came with a baby.

She looked over at Mrs. Miles and then Mr. Davis. He looked as if ready to faint. In case he would she pulled his body toward her so he would be leaning against both bed and wall.

"No, I can't be," she told looking straight at the male doctor who gave her the same creeps as Davis's little brother Andy.

"You, you are living under my roof and will do as I say. And I'm telling you to take a pregnancy test or whatever the heck this darn hospital has to tell us if it's true or not." He told with a strict tone.

"Davis Miles!" Mrs. Miles seemed surprised and quickly told the Doctor. "I'm so sorry."

"It's alright ma'am."

And she just couldn't hold back any longer. What was going to happen if it were to be true? Would he kick her out without a second thought even after giving her the choice?

"Sweetie everything will be alright?" Mrs. Miles told.

"How can I be alright when I could be pregnant at the age of fifteen?!" She sobbed into the palms of her hands.

She could feel the eyes on her acting like they cared. They hardly knew her and what she had gone through just to escape what she used to call home back in Flint Michigan

"I want to go home?" She cried.

Davis lifted her chin and she looked straight up at him. "We will soon but please take a text first."

"If you'd like I could get one for you?" The doctor said.

She nodded in response. She couldn't say no to the man who gave her a home, he had been kind enough to watch out for her.

Davis was the kindest man she had ever met besides her father. And she wished to always be with him for a long time. After all, she had no place to go other than his house. Even if she missed her home and parents very much she couldn't go back.

After a few minutes wait, the doctor returned with a test. Just seeing the test in his hands made her heart feel like it was going to break out of her chest. She hopped off of the bed with a little help from Davis and carefully took it from the doctor.

"The restroom is just down the hall third door on the left." The doctor told.

Without a word, she left the room by herself hiding the test in her pants pocket under her shirt. And took it out when she got into the restroom.

She did her business on the stick and then read the box to see how long it would take to get results.

As she waited anxiously for the time to be up without actually knowing the time. She took a peek at the test every few seconds.

When it felt like at least two minutes passed she now felt more anxious than usual. Taking a deep breath she flipped it over and began crying once again.

She hurried out of the restroom took the test with her and went back to where Mrs. Miles and Davis were waiting.

Bursting through the door in tears. Seeing there was no doctor she went to Davis and wrapped her arms around him and got a quick reaction from him.

And the test she clenched onto very tightly seemed to not have been tight enough when it just slipped from her finger when he took it from her hand so effortlessly.

She waited for him to say something but he never did only one single breath left his lungs.

"Can we go home now?" She asked.

"Of course sweetie just let me find the doctor to let him know." Mrs. Miles told and left the room.

Davis signed playing with her hair. She wasn't even sure if he knew he was doing it.

"You need to talk to me later on today, I want to understand why you came to my house in the middle of the night from Michigan?" He finally spoke.

Could she even gain the courage to speak about what had happened four weeks ago? About what happened to her home and her parents or what even happened to her that same night. She never wanted to resurface those horrifying memories again. But did she have any choice? She was living in a man's house who she has hardly known for a month. He had the right to know right?

"It's very personal to me I don't know if I can do it?"

He took a firm hold of her arms and she looked up into his gentle light brown eyes unlike her eyes they were red and puffy and filled with tears.

"Wipe your tears you don't want to make yourself look like a fool when you walk out of here." He told while doing it himself with a slight curve in his lips.

Seeing him smile only wanted to make her cry even more. How could he smile right now he wasn't supposed to be smiling in this sort of situation especially when she was only fifteen.

She slightly kicked his leg. "Don't smile at me I'm not okay." She told trying to stay serious but only to fail with a small smile forming on her lip.

No matter the situation or how big it may be he seemed to always make things a little bit better with his attractive smiles.

Don't get it all wrong she didn't love him she didn't even like him in that kind of way. How could she when he was eight years older than she was? He was a grown adult she was a minor it was impossible. And it wouldn't be good when he could go to prison for a long time.

But whoever the lady would be to spend the rest of her life with him would be one of the luckiest ladies out there.

"Sorry I won't." He became serious. "Come on let's go find mom and get out of here." He pushed himself off the wall and took her hand and she dragged her feet behind him. Not purposely but only because he was walking faster than usual.

When they were all together they went home on a silent ride. Mrs. Miles had made another appointment but for an ultrasound this time. Which she was surprisingly ok with.

And when they got home she was feeling well so far today with no nausea and vomiting so she made everyone dinner for the first time in a while. And since Davis was out in the field planting she took her time cleaning around the house as well while waiting for the food to finish baking.

She cleaned every room from top to bottom including the upstairs except for Davis's bedroom and bathroom since she was prohibited from entering the room unless had permission to enter, which was when she couldn't sleep at night and slept on the floor next to his bed because of all of the nightmares of her parents back home.

When minutes turned to an hour it was time to eat. She pulled the lasagna out of the oven and placed the hot pan on top of the burner. She grabbed three plates from the top cabinet three forks and a spatula from the drawer.

Forgotten how hot the pan was she touched the pan barehanded.

"Ah ouch!" She pulled her hand back only for her wrist to be caught in the air.

She knew whose hand it belonged to but it still surprised her she didn't even hear him come inside the house.

"Are you all right? Does it hurt?" He asked examining her hand over very carefully and cautiously.

She nodded keeping her eyes low.

"You need to be more careful?" He frowned and then walked out of the kitchen.

She did the same only the see an empty room. She wondered where he had gone, she couldn't just have imagined it.

She looked down at her red and sore hand one last time.

There was a loud thud upstairs.

"Sophie!" He came down the stairs quickly. "Sophie, did you go into my room?"

She shook her head. "No of course not."

"You're not lying to me are you?"

"I wouldn't dare and maybe your mom went in there?"

"Well anyway here." He held out a tube of burn cream. She took it and lightly applied the cream to her hand as he went to the kitchen.

She followed behind him and leaned against the counter and watched him as he cut the lasagna into slices and put them on plates for her.

"What is your plan?"

"Huh?" She looked at him confused.

"I mean do you plan to go through with the pregnancy?" He asked now facing her.

She hadn't given it much thought so she wasn't yet sure about it.

"I don't know?" She told honestly.

"Well, you did just find out today so you can think it over but not for long you only have a couple of months."

"What do you think I should do?"

"My opinion shouldn't matter to you I'm just fine with whatever choice you make."

"Even if I chose to keep the baby you wouldn't kick me out of your home?" She asked curiously.

"No, I had given you that choice to either leave or stay and I'm not going back on it."

Just hearing him say that felt like a big weight of relief was released from her shoulders. It brought a smile to her lips.

"Thank you so much I'm so glad I met you, kind sir!" She hugged him tightly.

He hugged her back but not as tight he was more gentle with her.

"Don't call me sir I don't like how that sounds."

She laughed and as they were still in a hug Mrs. Miles walks in placing groceries on the counter with a phone to her ear speaking to someone. And with a little motion to be quiet she immediately stopped laughing.

Davis's chest rises and lets out a sigh and she takes a couple of steps back. He must have known what Mrs. Miles was speaking about.

"Well, you hungry?" He asked picking up two plates and holding them up in between them.

She gave him a nod and sat in the next room at the table then ate her dinner.

After a few minutes passed Mrs. Miles could be heard from opposite floors. She was now arguing and this time she knew for a fact that it was about her.

"Sophie, could you talk to me about how and why you came here from Flint Michigan?"

She had forgotten all about the conversation there were to have today. All the cooking and cleaning must have made it slip her mind and hadn't thought over how she was going to tell him.

Not even starting to speak and looking into his eyes she already began to tear up.

"I'll give you a short story, I don't want to cry continuously." She told and taking a deep breath she began. "It all happens all too quickly four weeks ago before I left my hometown. One night I was sleeping in my bed when there was a sudden break-in and unfortunately, my parent's bedroom was the first room to be invaded, and were both shot to death." After whipping her constant running tear off her cheeks she continued. "I ran away unable to call for help when I was being chased by an armed man down the street of my home. And before I could run and hide I was yanked by the hair and pulled to the ground unable to move or scream. The next thing I knew I was locked inside a windowless bedroom and for two nights the first night five men with masks did the unforgivable thing to me one by one." She cried out loud unable to look into his eyes in the guilt of not telling him sooner.

"Can you tell me how you got here?" He asked in a soft tone.

"The next night one out of the five men came into the room that I was locked in and untied my arms and legs and out of defense I took my chance and kicked him then I escaped and tried to flee my city and ended up here. I didn't know I was in Indiana until you said something about it."
