Chapter 94

Hearing Roman talk about his father hitting Remi, you could tell even the memory hurt Roman to the core.

"She is older right? How did she react?"

"She was scared. Remi didn't have many friends, so she was sort of innocent well into her teen years. Thar hit shook her to the core."

"What about your mother? What did she say?" Poppy asked, engrossed in his story now.

"She left it up to me. Sure, they argued behind closed doors, but she lost all hope. Remember, Momma was depressed and when that happened she was struggling to keep going. I had to step up. So, I waited until he was sober and the next morning, when he came downstairs, I stood up to him. My sister was still in her room, afraid to come down for breakfast, worried he hit her again. People don't realize it, but Remi gets her feelings hurt very easily, and being a daddy's girl, it broke her heart. That night was not my dad. He loves us and I knew when he sobered up he'd hate himself for it."
