Chapter 10: Wrangwobblers

I turned to look to where she was pointing, and there, on top of the rocks and in the caves a short distance away were the monsters. They were sleeping soundly and I realized how big they were. They looked to be bigger than grizzly bears and had the anatomy of a distorted wolf with seven large claws on each hand and foot. I had never seen this type of monster before and was expecting them to look like one of the creatures I would fight back in Reinthoria.

Their skin was slimy and a disgusting dark yellowish color. Their teeth were so messed up and long that they stuck out of their mouth and they had no hair on their body at all. They didn't have tails or ears, and their bones stretched their skin wherever there was a joint, along with every bump of their spine. Their faces looked similar to that of a human, but their eyes looked ungodly large and I didn't know if I wanted to know what they looked like open.

May was shaking and couldn't look away as she saw them. She was terrified, but all I could think about was what it would feel like to take down a beast like that. 'I wonder if anyone's killed one of those things before. I can only imagine what kind of glory I would receive for taking the head from one of these.' I snapped out of it a moment later and had to pull May by the arm in order to get her to move.

Their numbers increased as we went on, all of them fast asleep. May got closer to me and I whispered. "How is hovering behind me going to help you if one wakes up?" She shook as she answered. "Maybe your strong scent of sweat and metal will disguise mine." I then tightened my grip on her arm so hard that she had to cover her mouth with her other hand to prevent herself from making noise.

She talked quietly and quickly, trying to apologize. "I didn't mean to be mean! I didn't mean to be mean! But seriously, have you ever thought of rubbing a flower on yourself after you bathe?" I raised an eyebrow. "Is that why you always smell so good?" She nodded. "Yes, it's actually- Wait, you've smelled me?" I let go of her and put my other hand on the hilt of my sword. "Uh-! It's hard not to when you're constantly trying to touch me! We're getting off-subject! Just get away from me okay?!"

A few seconds went by before I noticed that the monsters started sniffing in their sleep. I walked faster after realizing that they could smell May, and looked around to see if there was a clear way out that I could escape through. Suddenly, one of them that was next to us opened their wide eyes. Their eyes were entirely yellow, and their pupils were small and black.

Once it saw us, it stood up with a gross smile and yelled, "Fairy!!" in a monstrous voice. I didn't expect these things to be able to speak, and May screamed as the rest of the creatures woke up from the previous one's outburst. They roared loudly, and some of them licked their lips as they started to run towards us on all fours. Their eyes didn't leave May and I quickly sliced one of them through the face as soon as it got close enough.

Green slime sprayed out of the gash I opened with my blade, and it shrieked as it fell to the ground. I continued to stab and kill every one of them who got close to us and yelled at May as I kicked one away from me. "Go that way, and I'll go this way!" Her face stayed panicked as she dodged all the claws trying to tear her apart. "Why do we need to split up?!" I stabbed another through the chest and immediately pulled out my sword so I could slash another. "Because you're bait, dumbass!!"

I then managed to take advantage of a split second and turned around to run without looking back. I held my sword in hand as I jumped over large rocks and ducked over arches. I dodged more of the monsters until I saw the forest that lay on the other side of the desert. By then the monsters weren't interested in me anymore like I planned, and I safely made it back onto the sand.

I stopped to catch my breath for a moment, then continued to half-run towards the forest. About halfway there, I stopped again to a loud shriek coming from behind me. I turned to look, but couldn't see anything but large rocks. I knew that it was May who had screamed, and I was about to continue to run when I felt something stop me again.

I hesitated and looked at the trees in front of me. 'Damn it... It's going to suck having to ask for directions for the entire rest of my mission. Fuck!' I thought angrily as I turned around and started running back. I quickly made my way to where I last saw her, and soon enough I found May who was surprisingly not dead yet. The 'Wrangwobblers' as she called them, were fighting over her like a piece of meat. She screamed as they tugged her arms and attempted to bite into her.

It was disgusting seeing that they didn't care that she was still alive as they tried to eat her, and I rolled my eyes before heading in to rescue her. I became faster than I was before and cut through every creature that stood in my way before cutting the arms off of the one that restrained May. Her face was horror as she fell to the ground, seeing all the gore that surrounded her, and I continued to fight brutally.

The monsters screamed and tried to attack me, but I was quicker than them and picked up May by the arm and fought our way through again with only one hand. We sprinted in the direction that I had made my way out from, and we evaded all of the seven-fingered claws that tried to reach out and grab us. Eventually, we made it back onto the sand, and even though we were out of there, we didn't stop running until our feet stood on soil again.

We stopped and caught our breath once we reached the other side of the forest, and I tried to stop my heart from beating so rapidly. By now it had gotten dark and the only light that could be seen was from the moon and stars above us. It didn't take long to slow my breathing, and I held my sword up as I walked deeper into the cluster of trees. May followed me like I thought she would, and I spoke without looking at her.

"Quickly make a fire before the goblins show up. I'll stand watch." She didn't answer me and quickly did as I asked. As soon as a light appeared behind me, I relaxed my body and turned to sit down in front of the fireplace. Right before I was about to settle in for the night, May wrapped her arms around me suddenly. "You saved me! Thank you so much!"
