Chapter 40: Breakthroughs

Angela and Diego stayed on the bed for a long time, not talking. They just held hands and absorbed each other’s words. Diego finally spoke up.

“Where do we go from here?”

Angela sighed heavily. “I’m still not entirely happy with you,” she admitted. “I understand why you did what you did. I’ve always tried to understand you. But how much longer do I have to understand?”

She looked sad and a little desperate. She made an excellent point, though. As long as they were both working for Germaine, they could never really be together. Sure, they could steal moments of truth here and there, but Germaine would always demand absolute loyalty from both of them. If they were in a relationship, he would constantly try to test them.

“I don’t want to lose you again,” she said softly, a sob rising up from her chest. “I’ve lost you so many times and it doesn’t ever get easier,” she said through earnest tears. He moved closer to her and wrapped her in his arms.
