An Unlucky Night

Ava only took a short glance at Blake and then quickly turned back her face. She used to read novels that describe some persons' "eyes are like blades". At that time she didn't understand why a person's eyes can be like blades, but now she understanded. Blake's eyes were as sharp as the edge of an ice-cold blade, falling on her face, scraping her eyes, skin, even deep into the flesh and stirring her already chaotic mind.

Ava even felt pain in eyes when she looked at such a Blake.

Emma looked to the other side and saw Blake was looking at them. She hurriedly raised her glass and saluted to him.

Blake nodded and took a sip of the drink in the glass, then turned back.

Emma took a relived breathe and turned back to Ava: "You act too obviously."

Ava pursed her lips: "I'm sorry..."

Emma was speechless when Ava behaved submissive and said "I'm sorry" so much.

Ava's parents died when she was a child, she grew up with her grandparents. Mrs. Well was sympathy for her. So on the first day of high school, Mrs. Well told the whole class about Ava's unusual life experience during her absence, in order to inspire the classmates' compassion to take care of this poor girl. However, Ava's personality was quite odd and asocial, it was really difficult for the students to get along with her. Few in the class were willing to contact her. Only Emma, the class monitor who would take the initiative to talk to her due to the task assigned by the teachers.

Meanwhile, her study performance was not good, often in the middle or bottom of the class. None of the classmates could make friend with her, and even the teachers felt headache when seeing her.

Now Emma deeply realized by Ava's case that why "poor people don't deserve sympathy". How could someone be so dumb, so cowardly, and the same time so whimsical?

Ava had never attended former classmates' reunions. This time it's the class tenth anniversary and was of significance to the whole class. Emma wanted to gather as many classmates as possible. Using Blake's attendance to attract Ava was just a try, but she hadn't expected that it worked for Ava.

Emma was 100% sure that they two had not any contact for seven years after graduation. Ava was still in love with Blake for past seven years!

The intention of Emma's telling Ava that Vivian was also interested in Blake, but not make Ava sad, but to remind her not to waste emotion and time on a man that was impossible for her. Ava's destiny was pitiful enough, Emma didn't want her to make it even worse.

"I'll ask my husband to introduce his brother to you. Although might not as outstanding as Blake, he is a man of honesty and loyalty to family. You can get to know each other first. If you are not into him, I'll find next good man for you." Emma decided for her and did not give other options.

Ava was almost about to say that she felt okay being single and used to living alone. However, faced with Emma's warm eyes and strong recommendation, Ava hesitantly accepted the kindness.

"O…kay. Please thank your husband for this favor."

When the food was fully served, people stood up and take turns toasting and chatting with people at other tables.

Ava held a glass of drink, gathered up courage, and went to the next table to toast Mrs. Well.

Mrs. Well pushed her glasses and recognized Ava at once. She held Ava's hand and asked a lot about her life.

"Finance? It's pretty good, suitable for a slow person like you."

Vivian was talking to Blake. They were very close to each other. Her smile was graceful and sweet. Ava didn't peek at them on purpose, but they were in the direction she was standing to, so she could easily see them.

Other classmates came to toast Mrs. Well as well, so Ava hurriedly stepped aside, finished the conversation with Mrs. Well, and returned to her seat.

For the following time, she simply sat alone at the dining table. The people at the same table were chatting and exchanging contact information with others enthusiastically. Ava thought they were asocial as her, but apparently, they had evolved into social persons. Now she is the only passer-by.

"Blake, what are you secretly talking to our campus beauty?"? Come on, let's have a drink. A tall and strong man raised his glass and walked to Vivian and Blake.

Vivian frowned slightly, and her eyes contained a trace of imperceptible disgust.

Ava actually didn't remember most classmates' names except Blank, Emma, Vivian and a few others. However, she had some impression on this tall and strong man due to his terrible study performance. She remembered his name was Alex.

Alex liked Vivian so much that the whole school knew it. He didn't care even if he became a laughing stock, and never once he got a look from his goddess at all. Like Ava, when he was in love, he overrated himself and had an impossible dream.

"Where does handsome Blake work now?" Alex raised his chin high, thinking that he hided his enviousness well, but in fact, his hostility almost overflew his eyes.

"It's fine to just call me by my name." Blake stood up and clinked his glass to lightly with Alex's. "Recently, I'm doing labor work at the construction site."

Alex is stupefied: "You must be kidding me. You the top student will go to do labors at the construction site?" He glanced at Blake's cup, raised his eyebrows and said, "I'm drinking strong alcohol and you are drinking juice. Isn't it offensive??"

"I'm sorry I need to drive." Blake took a sip of the orange juice, completely ignoring Alex's feelings.

"You…" Alex's face gradually turned red with anger. He was about to say something else, at this moment Vivian stepped in and interrupted them. "Blake did drive here. You can't make him a drunk driver, can you? I can drink with you." Vivian smiled and pushed her glass to Alex, then drunk the wine to the bottom at once.

Alex knew that she was annoyed by his behaviors. He quickly lowered her eyebrows and said, "Don't drink that much wine. I didn't mean that. You misunderstood me"

Blake seemed to have watched enough Alex's lowly before Vivian, he left them aside and wen to the terrace to smoke cigarettes.

Seeing that Blake had gone, Vivian no longer disguised herself. "Alex," she said coldly, "Could you please stop bothering me?" She no longer paid any attention Blake and turned to the sofa area to talk to familiar female classmates.

It was easy to guess that Vivian was complaining to them about what happened just now, because the girls were looking at Alex like a garbage man.

Alex stood still for a while with red and disappointed face. His bear like strong body looked somewhat weak and helpless. Finally, he looked up and drank up the alcohol in the glass. He didn't dare to go to Vivian again but went back to his table.

Ava watched the whole thing and sighed with lament. Alex still didn't understand that both love and no love were certain feelings. Vivian would not feel into him just because of Blake's absence. A humble suitor needs self-consciousness, and should stick to the main principle of don't' be annoying.

At the end of the meal, Mrs. Well and most classmates left and over 10 people stayed. Evan proposed to sing karaoke.

Ava didn't mean to because it was far from her home and she might not be able to find a taxi to go back home. But when Emma asked her, she lose gain to her cowardly character and faintly agreed, because she had seldom been able to refuse others' request.

"Are you going too?" Emma was also extremely surprised when seeing her nodding. Emma quickly noticed Blake who was among them, and then understood Ava's decision. "OK, then let's go."

Ava put on her mask again and followed the crowd to take the elevator downstairs. She looked at the bright lights outside the sightseeing elevator, suddenly felt an impulse to break the glass and jump down.

She regret, a lot.

Ava could not sing at all. Shrank in her cotton-padded coat and a black mask, she dumbly sat in the corner like a freak in the singing room. Emma came to invite her to join their games or sing some songs at the beginning, but got no for a couple of times. Then Emma did not come again but was busy playing games. No one paid any more attention to her any more.

"Come on, decide and buy!"

Evan was a frequent visitor to all kinds of entertainments, therefore was very good at playing such games. When the microphone was taken by other "singers", he suggested that the rest of the people play dice. Loser had to drink, and those who could not drink should play a big adventure as other required.

He looked up at the corner and said, "Ava the silencer, come on to have fun, otherwise what do you do here?"

Ava was watching them play quietly, but suddenly called named by Evan. She moved her body before her brain reacted.

"Do you know how to play?" Emma gave her ten chips and asked.

Ava nodded. She just listened to the rules and knew how to play.

"Very nice," said Evan. "Come on, make a good guess."

"Big." Blake put five chips on the big side.

"Then I'll choose big, too." Vivian followed his choice.

"I bet it small." Alex gritted his teeth and threw five chips on the other side.

"Oh guys, you are having big bet. I'll just bet one chip on small". Emma was surprised and made cautious decision. When it was Ava's turn, she hesitated for a moment, and finally put five chips on the big side.

"Oh, Silencer you are quite bold. Have you learned from Blake? Alright everyone has done, and I'm going to open it." Evan's eyes patrolled around the faces of players and pressed one hand on the dice cup, creating a suspenseful atmosphere in an instant.

He removed the cup and read the number aloud: "Open! Four, one, three, Small!"

Alex immediately laughed out loud: "I win!"

Vivian looked down on his contemptuous face. She slightly lifted her eyelids and said, "Winning or losing is most common. For only one set, it's normal to lose."

Blake did not seem to care about the loss. He threw five more chips on the table: "On the big side." Alex again bet in Blake's opposite side, putting ten chips on the small.

Ava did not believe Blake's luck today. After thinking about it, she followed Alex and put two chips on the small side. She suddenly felt her face pricky as if someone was staring at her, but when she looked up, Blake looked down at the chips in his hand, and clearly did not look at her.

"Six, six, eight, big!"

However, this time the God of luck stood on the side of Blake, Alex lost most of his chips in an instant, and Ava had only three chips left.

The next two rounds, Ava only dared to put one chip each time, but neither of them made her win. There was only one chip left, and not much chance left for her.

"Did you find out? Whichever side Ava choose, the side will lose." Emma looked at Ava thoughtfully and did not bet.

As soon as people heard it, they recalled that it seemed very true for tonight. They looked at Ava in a subtle way soddenly.

"None of the four rounds was right, Ava, are you too unlucky?" Evan pressed the dice cup and told Ava to bet first, "which side do you want to put?"

Ava also recalled all her experiences tonight and had to agree with him that she was really unlucky tonight. "Big." Ava put the only chip on the table.

From Emma, Alex, Vivian to most others all bet on the small side, obviously did not want to avoid that bad luck. When it came to Blake, when everyone thought he would undoubtedly bet on "small", he moved his hand from "small" to "big".

He doesn't believe in metaphysics. "I'm on big, too". After that, he relax leaned back on the sofa, waiting for Evan to open his cup.

"Come on, whose luck is more powerful? Let's wait and see! "Evan dutifully pushed up the tense atmosphere again. Ava was infected by him. She clenched her hands tightly and sweated the palms".

"Open!" Evan lifted the cup in one breath. "One, one, three, small! The first loser has been generated. Let's congratulate on Miss. Ava!

Ava felt hallucinations, as if two little angels were really pulling banners above her head and firing salutes to celebrate the birth of this extremely unlucky person.

In an instant, she lost strength and bent her back.

Her bad luck not only ruined her bets, but also affected Blake. How annoying.
