Chapter 16

Boston. Massachusetts. Darsy's Apartment.

"How was your first day at work?" Jackson asked me over dinner.

Today he came back unusually late, as he was presenting the project. I was supposed to be there but my new job was my excuse. Instead of going to a boring conference for engineers, I was studying textbooks and notes in silence.

By the time Jackson got to the apartment, it was nine o'clock in the evening, and my Doppelganger had long returned from work.

I ordered Thai food for dinner, which we had just begun to eat.

"I got a standard first-day program – a tour around the office, signing a contract and meeting a bunch of new people. I didn't even try to remember all the names. It's just impossible. I think there are a thousand of them, and after lunch, they multiply and become twice as many!" I tried to joke. But it had zero effect. "Jackson, are you okay? How was the project presentation?"

"Fine..." he muttered.

"Jackson!" I was more insistent.
