Witness

A minute later and they would have missed the person they were looking for. They watched in surprise as the man hastily stuffed his belongings in his car's trunk. One look and they understood that he was ready to leave the country forever along with his family. They quickly got out of the car and almost ran towards the man.

"Mr. Jack can we have a word with you."

"Who are you? Neither do I know you nor I am interested in talking to you" the person named Jack replied harshly as he kept on stuffing his car trunk with his luggage hastily as if his life depended on it.

" I am sure you would love to talk to us if we told you that your family's life might be in danger if you ignore us" Rain went near him and whispered in his ear. She was loud enough to be heard by the two people beside her but not to Jack's family who were sitting in the car.

Although she was bluffing, Jack's expression shifted to that of horror when he heard her words and looked at the pair in front of him with a horrid expression. " Let's talk there." He pointed towards a bushy corner of his secluded home and started walking while assuring his wife that everything was fine with a gentle smile.

Rain and Elliot followed. Elliot looked towards his partner with an amused look in his eyes. He did not expect a naïve looking Rain to threaten this bodybuilder-looking man so convincingly. If he did not know better, even he would be convinced by her confident words.

Rain and Elliot hated to do this, but the past few days of investigation had taught them a lesson so they were dressed as local goons this time to look a little scary and someone with power. Their looks along with their serious expressions made them look more threatening than they were aiming for, making the poor Jack believe their words without a doubt. To him, they looked like dangerous people.

"I don't know anything. Please believe me and let me go." Jack pleaded as soon as they reached the corner, hidden from the view of his family.

"Then explain, Jack? Why did you quit the job? What is all this?" Rain asked as she pointed towards his family sitting inside the car and looking towards them with terrified expressions on their face. Although the corner they occupied was hidden from outside, they could perfectly see the other side.

Jack's expression shifted for a second on seeing the terrified look on his family's face. However, he quickly calmed himself as the gears in his brain turned and he figured out the identities of the people in front of him based on the girl's questions. They were not the ones whom he thought they were. However, he was already expecting a visit from them but didn't expect them to find him out this soon.

"What is there to explain? My wife always wanted to move to another country and now that I have saved enough, we are going to move where her dream is. How is that a problem to you." Jack asked looking back at them with fierce eyes, no more scared of them now that he knew who they were.

Elliot noticed the change in his attitude and expression. "You don't have to talk if you don't want to. But do you think that you and your family will be saved if you don't talk and move to another country? Or the people you are trying to protect will let you leave the country safely?" He sneered.

Jack was taken by surprise by Elliot's words, " I.. I don't know what you are talking about?"

"Oh, you very well know what I am talking about or else you would not be in a haste to leave the country. You are in such haste that you did not even bother to lock your door." Elliot pointed towards the ajar door of his house.

When Jack did not speak for a minute, Elliot knew that he had hit the spot. He put one hand on Jack's shoulder "I know what you are going through. But you don't have to play with their hands. Tell us everything you know, and we promise to protect you and your family from them. Do you know who this lady is beside me? She is one of the most influential people in this city, and she will do anything to protect you. Don't underestimate her."

Rain raised her brows as she looked at Elliot but did not say otherwise. As long as they managed to get the truth, she did not mind the little lie. As for protecting them, if the worst comes to worst, she could always ask the old man for his help. So, she just stood there radiating the aura of a boss, showing that everything that Elliot uttered was incontestable truth.
