Shadow of the night

For so long, he had felt restrained and caged in that room. But today, under the darkness and surrounded by the putrid smells, he felt liberated; he felt like a shadow, unseen and free.

He crouched like a cat and moved like with the darkness. He stayed in it and moved to the door. "I hate him for getting inside my head," he said to himself, and yet, he was smiling. For the first time in months, he was not shackled by fear.

He wanted to see the dwarf again. Even with all his new-found courage, he doubted himself. "I also don't know where the key is," he thought.

The door howled and the baby's wailing increased. He squeezed out through the small gap he had made. The night was grey with stars streaming across the milky sky.
