Chapter 42: Going to bed alone.

For another hour, Kit and Gunner talked about their sad past relationships and what they had hoped for in the future. They washed the dishes, which Kit hadn’t done in years, and they switched from their love lives to childhoods and then on to their likes and dislikes.

As Kit dried the wine glasses, he was struck by how amazingly smart Gunner was and how sweet and funny he was. The man had plans, and his excitement for his land was infectious. By the time the kitchen was clean, Kit had started to want the cabin land for Gunner. He wanted to see Gunner’s dream come to life.

When the last dish was put away, Kit discovered that he was running out of reasons to hang out downstairs. It was late, and he knew he should call it a night. He patted Barb on the head and sighed.

“I should be getting to bed.”

“I’m up for that.” Gunner grinned.

“I mean alone.”
