Chapter - 2 Donut !

Alice was surprised and confused at the same time to hear Dr.Ralph's reply. "Dr.G always goes to the mortuary in certain death cases like this to pay a visit to the dead." said Dr.Ralph sensing her confusion. "But why would anyone visit the dead you don't know or not operated on?" asked Alice, still in confusion of Dr.G's action. "We were also in the same state when we found out." informed Dr.Stanley as he placed four cups of coffee on the table and he continued, "It took a lot of courage to ask Dr.G the reason behind it. You know what she said?" Alice sat straight with curiosity to know the reason. Dr.Ralph interrupted and said, "I will say what she said. When we asked her she replied to us with a question 'Won't the dead want to hear some assuring words before leaving the earth instead of cries and complains?' That question made us speechless and from that day onward we have never questioned her actions again."

Now Alice understood the reason why her seniors and other medical officers respected Dr.G so much. Everyday Alice gets to learn an important lesson from Dr.G and everyday Dr.G amuses her. Dr.G was her role model from then on. Alice thought, 'I will be number one fan of Dr.G and follow her to the end of the world no matter what.' They continued talking about the chaos in the ER, the desperation of the patient's families and successful surgeries. After a long time, Dr.G entered the department room for brief rest after 40 long hours of endless work and she was welcomed by the sight of Victor's face beaming with joy after the successful surgery.

Victor is the chief resident who has been assisting Dr.G for the past three years and she was really proud of what he has become now. She slowly entered the room and listened to the conversation. Ralph was explaining a situation that happened in the OP and Victor tackled it without panicking. Stanley and Alice sat there and listened to them with admiration. She noticed that smug look on Victor's face when the other residents were praising his skills. Dr.G thought with a proud smile on her face 'Victor has been a great resident and worked hard at every step he has taken. Even the times I shouted at him in the operation room. He has never complained about anything. He did pretty well on his first surgery as the lead but I don't want him to fly above the ground just for a simple case like this.'

With determination to wash away his smugness from his face, Dr.G walked over to them and said "Oh Victor!" Victor and others were shocked to hear Dr.G's voice out of nowhere and turned at once to look at her. Victor thought she called out his name to appreciate him but to his surprise, she sat on the chair casually and continued, "I still remember the boy who ran out in the middle of the surgery to get the DONUT!!" His smugness was completely replaced with embarrassment at once.

Ralph started laughing immediately and Dr.G was satisfied knowing that her goal had been achieved whereas Alice and Stanley were wondering what they were laughing about. Ralph noticed that only he was laughing and started to explain it to them but Victor rushed to his side and covered his mouth because Victor had to face the embarrassment of his only mistake for nearly 3 months not only that some of his old colleagues still called him 'Donut'. Somehow, Ralph was out of Victor's clutches and started explaining the incident.

Dr.Ralph, a senior resident who is very tenacious in his work, is the only resident who dares to bring up his chief's embarrassing past. Dr.Ralph took up the opportunity and explained the incident to them, "When Dr.Victor was a Junior resident he was called in for a surgery and Dr.Henry (present HOD) was leading the surgery. In between the surgery, Dr.Henry asked Dr.Victor to bring him the donut. Without any hesitation, Dr.Victor ran out of the operating room and everyone in the operating room was shocked at his sudden departure from the operating room. Tell me who runs out of the operating room in the middle of surgery when your senior asks you to bring something?" He paused with the question to look at others. Alice also wondered why he would rush out of the operating room. He chuckled and continued, "The donut which Dr.Henry referred to was the pad to place under the patient's head but Dr.Victor misunderstood it for real Donuts !!!!!" There was a loud uproar in the room and Stanley was literally rolling on the floor while Alice couldn't breathe because she couldn't stop laughing.

Laughter is more contagious than any disease so even Victor started laughing at his stupid actions. The laughter continued for a while and slowly came to a stop. Dr.G brought her flying resident down and also cheered the residents after a long exhausting day. Later Dr.G asked Dr.Stanley to brief the surgeries and schedules in the upcoming days. As everything was settled and there was still 5 hours before the rounds in the morning, Dr.G helped the residents with their thesis for another hour and gave them orders on what all should be prepared for the surgeries scheduled for that week. She then took a leave for her office.

Before leaving the room, she stopped for a minute and looked at everyone with a serious look on her face. They looked at her with anticipation thinking she left out something, and she said, "actually after half an hour Dr.Victor did return with six varieties of donuts !!" HahAhahaha !!!! Once again laughter erupted in the room and with a faint smile on her face she exited the corridor.
