Gianna stood up and stretched her body to relax her muscles. She drank the energy drink gifted by Lorenzo and prepared her mind for the next surgery. Just as she stepped out of the room, Dr.Jason greeted her and said, "About last night -" but Dr.Jason was cut off by Gianna. "I am headed for a surgery so, talk to you later, Dr.Jason." Gianna walked steadily towards the operating room without another word and Jason was irritated by her attitude.
'She gave me the same attitude in front of all those useless residents last night! Does she think highly of herself as I am always so soft towards her? Zane or whoever it is, I will not lose Gianna to anyone! But if she continues this attitude, then I have no other choice. It's all on you Gianna.' thought Dr.Jason, looking at the departing figure of Dr.G.
Gianna scrubbed in and walked towards the operating table where the patient was laid face down on the table. The anesthetist reported the vital functions of the patient to Dr.G and right at half past two pm, Dr.G started the surgery. Stanley was fully focused on the surgery and clearly observed Dr.G's surgery techniques. The second surgery was a laminectomy procedure to remove a small piece of a bone in the spine to relieve pressure on the nerve.
Gianna looked around and told everyone to focus. She started with an incision on the spinal region and continued the procedure without any distraction. Gianna was almost finished removing the piece of bone when Stanley by mistake touched Gianna's hand which held the instrument holding the bone. Gianna immediately tightened her grip on the instrument so that the bone won't slip and cause damage to the nerve beneath it.
Everyone's heart stopped beating for a second and let out a relieved sigh seeing Dr.G's quick reaction. Stanley's hands felt heavy and he was sweating from top to bottom. Stanley slowly looked at Gianna but her icy glare pierced through his brain. Stanley's face turned pale in fear and stammered, "So..sorry.-". Gianna cut him off and yelled "Are you blind? Get your act together now or never enter the operating room."
Gianna's yelling brought Stanley back to his senses. He straightened up quickly and said, "Sorry, Dr.G." "There is no room for 'SORRY' in the operating room. Never forget that." said Gianna in an icy tone and continued with the surgery. The surgery finished within two hours and the x-ray showed the surgery was successful. Gianna and Stanley stepped out of the operating room together. "Let's talk to the patient's family first and then we will head to the department room." Stanley nodded silently and followed Dr.G.
"The surgery went well. You don't have to worry. Please take care of him properly and don't let him lift any weight for a few months." said Gianna to the patient's wife. "Thank you so much Dr.G." replied the patient's wife holding Gianna's hand. Gianna comforted her and left for the department room. Stanley trembled as they neared the room and he felt like running away because he didn't know how to face Dr.G.
The team was discussing the procedure used in the morning surgery while observing the surgery video. Gianna heard their loud voices outside and placed the index finger on her lips signalling Stanley to not to make a noise. She entered the room quietly and stood behind them listening to their discussion. Stanley also followed her without making any noise.
"I have no idea how a surgeon can sit continuously for hours and hours to operate on the patient without distraction!" exclaimed Alice , keenly observing the video. "This is a simple procedure for Dr.G. There are many complicated surgeries where Dr.G had to operate continuously for 7 - hours." said Victor proudly. "That's true! But the more I observe her technique, the more confused I am." Ralph said in a disappointed tone.
"What is so confusing?" asked Dr.G from behind. The three were terrified and sprang from their seats to see Dr.G standing behind them. Stanley let out a chuckle looking at their reaction but immediately stopped as he saw Dr.G glaring at him. All the three greeted Gianna and Alice went to prepare coffee for all of them. Gianna leaned on the chair and asked Ralph, "What is confusing you?"
Ralph cleared his throat and said, "Dr.G, the way you operate looks slow and steady but how come you finish the surgery so soon? Today's procedure would have taken at least 4 hours but you completed within 3 hours! How do you do that?" Gianna smiled at them and motioned the team to take the seat.
Gianna turned to face Stanley and asked, "Stanley, do you have something to say?" Stanley's body tensed up as he heard his name. He tried to look at Dr.G but lowered his head and said, "I realized my mistake, Dr.G. I won't repeat it anymore." Gianna leaned on the chair while tapping her fingers on the table with her eyes closed. The three looked at each other not having a clue of what was happening. The room was awkwardly silent except for the sound of the coffee machine.
The coffee machine stopped and Alice placed the coffee cups on the table. Everyone slowly grabbed the cups from the tray and the team looked at Gianna. Gianna took a few sips and asked Stanley, "Why do you think I yelled at you?" Victor and Ralph immediately guessed that Stanley made a mistake during the surgery. Stanley looked at Dr.G and pondered about her question. "I should have been careful of my movements but I failed and it would have cost the patient's life."
