A Haven for the Oppressed - Part 1

I felt the soft sensation of grass on my hands. Where was I? I looked around to see only a never-ending field of clean uniform bright, deep-green grass. The bright sun was shining down towards me with not a single spec of cloud in sight.

What was this place?

I didn't see anything nearby so I decided to open my Vampire System menu to see what I could do. I opened a screen called 'Haven Missions'

-

Once you accept a mission, the monster or substance will spawn.

1. Kill a Cave Goblin [Difficulty: F-]

2. Complete the Beginner Dungeon [Difficulty: F]

3. Kill a Treeforce Boar [Difficulty: F]

Apparently I get to 'accept' missions which was different. I didn't know which one to pick so I decided to just start with the easiest one. I selected the 'Kill a Cave Goblin' mission.

Suddenly a cloud of grey smoke and dust gathered in front of me. I took a few steps back and created a little bit of distance between me and it. After swirling around like a tornado, a dark, almost completely-black goblin appeared in front of me with a little splash of sparks.

Crap, I should've prepared earlier.

Without any hesitation, it began charging straight at me. I conjured my [Blood Blade] and held it out in front of me. The adrenaline in my body made me capable to manoeuvring the blade around. I still had no idea how to actually use a sword so I just raised it up and swung it down.

As I was about to hit the goblin, it stopped and jumped back. The point of my blade managed to scrape the top of the goblin's head, causing a slight flow of green viscous liquid. A bit of the blood landed on the blade and it sucked it in. When that happened, the blade grew to a slightly darker red and felt slightly lighter.

This fight wasn't going to be easy. I considered my options and abilities, there wasn't any animals nearby to kill to feed my [Blood Blade]. I thought about feeding it my own blood but I wanted to leave that as a last resort.

I raised my sword once again and swung at the erratically-moving goblin. It was incredibly difficult to hit it due to its constantly jumping and sidestepping. Suddenly, I felt contact at the end of the blade, I had managed to slice his eyes. It fell to the ground holding its face and I quickly stuck my sword down in its neck and finished it off.

The goblin then disappeared, leaving behind a little white cloud of smoke.

At this moment, I took leaned down and caught my breath. At my command [Blood Blade] also dissipated into the air. That was a lot more stressful and demanding than I had expected. I opened the missions menu again and looked at what I got from it.

Huh. It didn't remove the mission and replace it with another one. It seemed like I could do a mission more than once. I guess this was a reliable way of getting experience points. I still needed quite a few more before I could level up so I guess I'd just do this for a little while. The fight was tiring but I managed to not suffer any injuries.

After a little break, I opened up the missions menu and summoned the Cave Goblin once again. Just like before there was a little cloud of summoning dust and as expected, an ugly creature popped out.

I summoned [Blood Blade] and raised it. Now that my body was already in a working mode, I managed to focus on my movements a little more and tried to get off a few good shots at the goblin instead of randomly swinging. However, for a brief second, I let my guard down and the goblin managed to scratch my leg, ripping the material of my pants and drawing blood from my leg.

I couldn't feel it much at the time but I did notice a slight stinging sensation. I managed to continue the fight and after a few swings, I was able to get a clean strike on the goblin, cutting its head off. Its corpse disappeared into the air as I dropped to the ground, catching my breath. Crap, doing it two times in a row really took a toll on my body.

I was shown the same screen as last time, with the mission resetting and allowing me to accept it again. It appeared that there were diminishing returns on each mission though. I was now at 342 experience out of the 1000 that I needed to level up.

I decided to open up the shop and see if there was something I could buy.

-

For Sale (Refreshes every day):

[Increased Blood Capacity] - 10 Vampire Tokens

[Flashbang] - 2 Vampire Tokens

[Random Common Ability] - 50 Vampire Tokens

-

Looks like the shop hasn't refreshed yet. I had 16 Vampire Tokens so I had enough to buy [Increased Blood Capacity] and three flashbangs. I thought about it for a little and decided that I'd only get one flashbang for now to help me fight the next monster.

Purchased!

- [Increased Blood Capacity]

- [Flashbang] x1

~

I suddenly felt more alive. I guess the increased blood capacity gave me a little bit more energy as well. I noticed that the flashbang could be summoned to my hand like my [Blood Blade] so I didn't have to carry it around with me which was convenient.

I sat on the grass for a little break before I decided to take on my next mission.

Let's see how strong this Treeforce Boar was.
