CHAPTER 27
Slowly, Xavier shut his eyes as his chest rose. He took steady deep breaths to help calm his mind and thoughts.
He missed his friend and there was no argument about it.
He regretted some things but now this was the age and time he met himself.
He heaved out another deep sigh before crossing the space in his room and making his way over to the reading desk in the left-hand corner.
On it was a ring big enough to fit his little finger lay rested as his dull form failed to single it out for anything.
However, the intense gaze directed at the ring from Xavier spoke a different tale.
He did not waste a second and picked it up as he brought it up to his line of sight.
"Hmm. Dull but different. Even I, can feel the difference in the magic being exuded."
His eyeliners relaxed as his breathing stilled.
Although he had only just awakened, he still felt uneasy with some of the new things being invented and for some reason, the ring was one of them.
**Flashback**
Having left the first set of dragon supporters to arrive, Xavier made his way to the garden at the back of his palace.
For a while, remained there, standing under the big divine tree and waiting for Xander's appearance.
Taking hold of the delay, he used that time to clear his thoughts and read into so many of the situations present.
There was the issue of the house of Pendragon. Although they were the chief dragon family, Xavier could barely accept that they changed sides.
They were never to bow down to anyone except the true heir of the Dragon race.
All it took was one word and they could rally the rest of his supporters and change things.
Instead, they clung to the rulers like a parasite feeding on its host.
He released another deep breath before shaking his head.
'No. Do not let this bother you so much.' He encouraged himself internally and made a turn.
The second he did that, he felt someone bow before him and stiffened for a second.
His eyes remained unblinking as he stared down at Xander with only one thought racing through his brain.
How and when or where did Xander come from?
How was it possible to not feel his presence or get any slight signal of his appearance?
No matter what Xavier thought, he still found it all suspicious he could do such a thing.
If anything was taken into consideration, then it would be the fact that this was one of the places in the entire palace with the richest form of energy.
Simply put, his senses ought to have been sharpened at once and then he could have sensed Xander, however, calm he chose to be.
Pushing his thoughts aside, he turned to face Xander completely.
His intense gaze remained directed at Xander for a few more seconds as he studied everything about him, hoping to figure something out.
Regardless of such, he couldn't and in the end, he had to let him rise.
"Rise," Xavier commanded and brought his hands behind him as he waited for what Xander wished to tell him.
"You wished to see me, Your Majesty," Xander began and lifted his eyes to meet Xavier's.
"Does anything trouble, Your Majesty?"
Xavier did not get the chance to speak before his word was interrupted. "If it does, all you need to do is ask and I promise I would give you a truthful answer."
"Perhaps." Xander arched his brows at him as he prepared for what was to come next.
"Anyways, I sensed you hesitated a bit back there in the throne room and I wished to understand. And also, I would be leaving you in charge, do you have any problem whatsoever as this would be a difficult task."
"I have none. However, I cannot stay here in Drakenflame."
"What?"
"Yes. My deepest apologies. As you are well aware, not all of us supporting you are here. The others would need a safe passage here."
He released a sharp breath before taking a step closer. "I am sorry to say but King…"
Xander took a pause and quickly corrected himself before he ruined his chances with Xavier's trust and ruined his mood.
"The current king of Drakenflare made things difficult for the twelve houses. And since had tried to eradicate those still fighting his rule from the shadows."
"As expected," Xavier's deep voice affirmed, shocking Xander who was least expecting that response.
The look in his eyes turned even more serious and he continued. "He feared my awakening and what's more, now that I really have returned, he would prosecute the house a lot."
"Yes, your majesty. And that is why they need me. He doesn't know I do not stand with him. I had to do this when Pendragon's head relinquished his support to you easily."
Xavier's eyes narrowed at him as he tried to understand what he meant. Not that he didn't, he was sceptical.
Also, from what he said, Xander made it seem like it was in his time such betrayal happened.
"No. My mistake, your grace. It did not happen in my time; however, the new head of the House of Pendragon could easily see that the other Houses suffered and were sidelined greatly."
"All right. That is a bit noble."
"I won't say so just yet, Your Majesty."
"Why?" Xavier questioned. "He did not follow in his father's footsteps, did he?"
"At first, he didn't but then when I found out this about him and how different our ideologies were, I was glad. Sadly, at the moment of truth, he tried convincing me to see the good in King Jared."
"Was this Jared, good at any time?"
"No. It was all a façade. Immediately he came into power, his first decree targeted the Houses of authority once more, pushing them away."
"I see," Xavier said thoughtfully. "But you weren't affected."
"I wasn't to some extent but I was. It was as though he was keeping me on a leash, so I could only bark but not bite. That way, he was certain I wouldn't retaliate against him."
"Because he could attack you at any given second should he find your loyalty, a lie, right?" Xavier concluded with his own question.
He was sure just how twisted and paranoid this new king's mind worked. After all, he took a throne not befitting of him with half of the Houses of Drakenflare not supporting his rule.
To Xander's surprise, a light chuckle fell off his lips as he pondered on the issue in his mind.
Left to Xavier, it felt as though he was being challenged by a young chick, learning how to walk.
'Of course, burning him would be the best. I can already smell the scent of roasted meat.' Xavier thought jokingly in his mind.
Sensing something amiss, Xander's brows knitted together but he kept his inner thoughts to himself and decided to change the topic.
"Exactly. At least neither House Head is his royal advisor. He takes advice from his head warlock, whom I am made to believe you have locked up his daughter here in Drakenflame."
