The Job - 5

Entering the room, the scenery blew my mind.

The room was incomprehensible, making me feel as if I was looking at everything, whilst feeling nothing at the same time.

Finally, the area around me became clear, and I found myself in a room somewhat like an observatory.

The glass ceiling was curved like a dome, and it seemed like I could see multiple galaxies close up as they pressed themselves against the glass.

But this was where the similarities ended, as rows and rows of books surrounded the area, and in the middle, instead of a telescope, there was a single desk with hundreds of tools on it.

The entirety of the dais that the desk sat on was bathed in a cool, vibrant moonlight, and the chair was one of the highest quality.

I couldn't help but whistle as I looked at my new workplace.

But then, my smile turned into a frown as I saw the number of books that were piled up on my desk.

I mean, it was pretty self explanatory from the skills that I had to what I had to do with these books.

Resigning myself to a long, boring task, I walked up to the desk and sat down.

Knowing that just staring at the tall piles wouldn't do anything, I reluctantly grabbed the first book.

First thing's first, I checked the quality of the cover, making sure that the book wasn't irreparably creased or if the hard cover had any scratches on it.

Finding a few faults, I quickly grabbed the correct tools and fixed all of them.

Finally opening the book, I realized something.

I could read the books!

Realizing this, I now knew why the building had made "Loving Books" a requirement for this job.

I mean, it even gave me the Speed Reading and Perfect Memory skills within the package.

It was obvious that the building wanted me to enjoy these books whilst repairing them.

So, that was exactly what I did, as I restored book after book after book, getting lost in the process, whilst never getting truly bored as I grew to love books even more and more.

I mean, even though the books were about every single thing one could think about, from random thoughts such as an apple's anatomy, to advanced subjects like quantum mechanics, I could completely understand all of them.

The books were worded in such a way that even a layman could read them, being incredibly intuitive and creatively worded.

By the time morning came, I had finished the piles that had originally been on my desk, and 5 more piles that Lucille had given me every time I was done with the previous ones.

Actually, I was only able to stop when Lucille gently patted my shoulder and then forcibly twisted my head up, allowing me to see the beginning of the sun's rise, as its first rays shined through the curved glass dome.

"I have to admit, for an otherworlder, you have a strange love for books, one that I've never seen before, even from those native bookkeepers at the city libraries."

"I'm glad that you would think of me like that." I responded calmly.

"Hmph! That doesn't mean that I accept you though!"

"Whatever, now, do I just go out the same way I came in?"

"Yes, and you'll need to come back a week later to keep your job."

"You're acting like I didn't read the small font where it said that I would automatically be teleported here."

"Damnit." She muttered under her breath.

"Or the fact that I can choose a new skill each year from the library. I mean, did you think that I'd be that dumb?"

"…"

"Whatever, just bring me to the skill library."

Harshly turning around, her hostility showing in her every movement, she started walking through the maze of bookshelves, and so I started following her before I lost her.

Finally reaching a certain bookshelf, she said,

"Remember that if you fall to your greed and chose a skill you are unworthy of…"

"I'll be automatically killed and banned from the game. Just a question, how much power does this library/archive hold for it to have that much power?"

"It's none of your business, just choose a skill and go. I trust that you have already memorized the way out?"

"Yes yes, you're dismissed now, my assistant."

Hearing me emphasize the last two parts, all she could do was, "Harrumph!" before walking away into the maze.

And now, I was left here with a decision in my hands.

Quickly using my Godly level Speed Reading and Nimble Hands skills, I read through all of the skills in this section of the library and immediately narrowed down my options to two skills.

[Skill: A Deal's a Deal

Description: If there is any form of consent to something the user says, well, a deal's a deal! If the other party breaks the deal, then well, they ded.]

[Skill: Clock of Chronos

Description: You can slow down time around you for 5 minutes.

Cooldown: 7 Days]

You see, although both of these were pretty good, they weren't the best, so I assumed that they were in the scope of what I could chose from.

Comparing the two, I figured that "A Deal's a Deal" was better, as the other legendary class that I would be aiming for came with a skill like "Clock of Chronos".

So, holding my breath and crossing my fingers, I chose "A Deal's a Deal".

I watched as the skill book disappeared, and a system notification popped up.

Holding my breath for a few more seconds, and seeing that nothing was happening to me, I exhaled in relief.

But then, the familiar female robotic voice caught me by surprise.

[System Announcement: The first legendary class has been claimed by player "Borealis".]

Hearing this, I was confused for a second, but just shook my head afterwards.

I mean, even though I had gotten the first legendary class, this mysterious "building", or whatever it was, had probably blocked the announcement, but I was okay with that, after all, I didn't want to bring attention to myself at all.

But, this "Borealis" character was interesting. They were either extremely lucky, or it was something else...

A bright light came into my vision, and realizing the sun was now fully up, I looked down, and realizing that I was back in the newbie outfit, I knew that my time here was over, so I quickly left the building.

It was time for me to go get my second legendary class.
