Andrea added, "I've thought of having another mate, another wife." I'm still young, and I think Ellen would be an excellent match for me; that way, we can have puppies and I'll have a successor.

Carl held the glass so tightly that he snapped off the stem. As the glass smashed on the floor, he said, "Christ." Thankfully, just the stem broke off, and the rest of the cup remained in his palm. The cuts on his fingers from the shards of glass bled profusely.

Andrea gave him a white handkerchief and said, "Here." He waved a waiter or waitress by who was walking by to pick up the shattered wine glass.

He accepted it, said "thanks," and applied it to the wound. In about an hour, it would be entirely healed, but he still appreciated the thought.

Carl looked at Ellen once again, and this time she turned around and gave him a big grin as she felt his gaze on her. He returned her grin and waved at her with two fingers.
