Chapter 27

Jessey swallowed the sympathetic words threatening to come out of her mouth. From the look on his face, he wouldn’t appreciate them. But, God, she couldn’t imagine growing up like that, without the loving—okay, infuriating—support of her family. She bit her lip and stayed silent, waiting for him to continue.

“She made it all the way until I graduated high school. Dodge was just a year behind me, a senior at the time. One day Mom was fine and the next we got a call from the hospital saying she’d had a heart attack.”
