Daehuyn's eyes flickered open. A strong mixture of antiseptics and disinfectants filled the air. He strained his eyes looking directly at the white light around him. He had a bad headache that made his head feel like it was splitting in two. Slowly, Daehuyn sat up, wondering how he had ended up at the infirmary. He tried moving but felt a tug on the white sheet over him. Beside him was his senior, Soyoung, but why was she there?
Daehuyn tried to remember what had happened that led up to him being here. He remembered following the young miss and Soyoung to school. He remembered how she whined about not getting into the car with him. He remembered them dropping her off and having a joy ride with Dong Man. Then what next?
"Daehuyn?" He heard his name as he thought hard about what happened. But before he could answer, Soyoung dashed out of the room, calling for the doctor, leaving poor Daehuyn more confused.
He watched Soyoung come back with some doctors and nurses. They told him to relax and breathe and touched him in different places. Then they asked him a few questions like his name, and how many fingers they held up, and finally they asked him the same question he had been asking himself since he woke up.
"Daehuyn, do you know why you're here?" Daehuyn stared at the doctor's face for a while, then shook his head. He really didn't remember why he was here in the first place. Then Daehuyn spoke.
"How long have I been here?" He asked.
"It's been a bit over a day. A few hours more would make it two days and we would have concluded that you had slipped into a coma, but thankfully you came through," the doctor said Soyoung stood quietly by the side, listening and hoping nothing was further wrong with him.
"He's suffering from a temporary memory loss. The reason is still unknown, but it should be back in a few days, so there's nothing to worry about. Just don't stress him to remember anything," the doctor explained to Soyoung.
"Doctor? Can't you tell me why I'm here?" Daehuyn asked. Soyoung felt a chill down her spine.
"I would, but that could put you in a possible state of shock," the doctor said, putting Soyoung at ease while Daehuyn nodded.
The doctor said he was going to prescribe some drugs to him and also conduct a few tests after the nurse did some necessary things, and in a few hours he was going to be relieved. Daehuyn understood all this, but one more thing puzzled him. Why was Soyoung Seonbae here? He was asked to leave the room while the nurses took his blood, so he asked them and they told him that she was the one who took care of him for the past two days. But why? After the doctors and nurses finished and left, he decided to ask as soon as she came back.
"Soyoung seonbae, thank you for taking care of me for the past few days." Daehuyn bowed from his bed, Soyoung gave a sad smile while shaking her head in confusion at Daehuyn's return.
"You shouldn't thank me. I'm the reason you're in this condition," Soyoung said, bowing her head.
"I don't remember what you did, but by taking care of me, it shows you have a heart of repentance, so who am I not to forgive you, Daehuyn?" she said cheerfully. Soyoung stared at Daehuyn like he had grown a second head but burst into laughter the next second. For the first time since the incident, she felt at peace with herself.
"You really are a monk, aren't you?" Soyoung said between tears, causing Daehuyn to panic a bit.
Soyoung spent the next few hours talking to Daehuyn, getting to know him better, and on Daehuyn's side too, he was starting to understand what kind of person she was as was, and when it was time to leave, they had an unexpected guest.
Yeonseul was a familiar face given that he was put in charge of Daehuyn, but Hana? What is going on here? They all sat down in Daehuyn's room staring at everything but each other. The tension in the room felt so thick that one could cut it with a knife so as not to drag things further. Yeonseul spoke first.
"It's good to see you're doing well, Daehuyn…" Yeonseul started, but Daehuyn said nothing and just bowed.
"So, the reason I came with the young lady is that, after much deliberating, the young lady believes she has something to say, Hana..." Yeonseul opened the floor. Hana had had this bitter look on her face since they came, and if you think it couldn't get any worse, then that's a big mistake.
"Ya Geochin man," Hana paused, looking at Yeonseul, who was shaking his head, before continuing.
"Kim Daehuyn, I have come to formally apologize for how I've been treating you, and maybe it's my fault you ended up here." Yeonseul shoves her shoulder.
"Fine, it's my fault you're stuck with her and so I apologize... I'm sorry." Hana said hurriedly with her arms folded. Yeonseul sighed and placed a hand behind Hana's head, bending her head to apologize, earning a yelp from her.
"On behalf of Miss Hana, I properly apologize to you, Kim Daehuyn," Yeonseul said, still holding Hana's head.
Daehuyn stared at them and figured maybe Soyoung Seonbae was trying to cover up the young lady's mistake by taking the blame on herself, but they were here now, even though the young lady didn't mean any word that came out of her mouth. Soyoung leaped to his feet and bowed to the two.
"No, I should apologize for causing trouble and making you worry about me. I promise to do better," Daehuyn said.
"That's more like it," Hana said, under her breath but audible enough for everyone to hear. Yeonseul cleared his throat before he continued.
"Thank you, Daehuyn. You'll be given the rest of the day off, but your test still takes place on Monday, so I don't expect you to slack off because of a little rain," Yeonseul said, and Daehuyn gave him a confused look while Soyoung gave him a warning look. The doctor had said not to push his memory and Daehuyn had no recollection of what happened.
When Yeonseul realized what he had said, he apologized to Daehuyn, who didn't mind saying he was bound to remember what happened someday. After a few seconds of another awkward silence, Yeonseul stood up, excusing himself and Hana, and not long after, Soyoung helped Daehuyn clear out of the room and back to his room at the dorm.
Bang! Bang! Bang bang!!! Those were the sounds of streamers and mini bangs that were heard around as soon as Daehuyn walked into his room. Both he and Soyoung were surprised by the number of people that had come to welcome Daehuyn back. They even brought a cake to celebrate his recovery.
After Soyoung put away Daehuyn's things, they all went together to the little welcome party they had put together for Daehuyn. Although it was obvious that this was only an excuse to cut back and relax, Soyoung let it slide since at least the others were also concerned about Daehuyn's well-being, something she had failed to realize once but never again would happen. The lives of her comrades also mattered.
The party went on well into the night, as they sang, ate, and drank; and when it was close to midnight, about half of them were being dragged back to their rooms. If not for anything else, Daehuyn was at least happy that he was able to create a home for himself here in such a short amount of time. After everyone left, he decided to go outside and get some fresh air.
The night was clear with a cool breeze that enveloped the surrounding area. The mansion was far from the big city, so the stars were at least visible to the naked eye. Daehuyn was happy to get away from the intoxicating smell of soju and beer and was glad to be in the open.
"It seems like the others really went all in for your welcome back party." Daehuyn heard something behind him. He turned around to find Yeonseul holding two cans.
"Don't worry, I heard you don't drink, so I brought a sprite," Yeonseul said, raising the can. He handed it over to Daehuyn, who respectfully collected it, turned to the side, opened it, and took a sip.
"Hmm, who knew you were looking up Korean manners in the mountains?" Yeonseul smirked.
"Yeonseul seonbae, the mountains are still in Korea, you know," Daehuyn defended, making Yeonseul laugh.
"Thank you for earlier…" Yeonseul changed the subject, and Daehuyn stood there quietly listening to what he had to say.
"I saw the relief on Soyoung's face. It seems like you have forgiven her too," Yeonseul explained further.
"I don't remember what happened, but, nevertheless, she took care of me when someone else would have. Whatever she did, we should always focus on the good in people, even Miss Hana," Daehuyn answered.
Yeonseul laughed, "Hana can be quite a handful, but she's still just a kid and her father's only daughter. Did you know Hana has an older brother?"
Dumbfounded Daehuyn turned to look at Yeonseul with wide eyes. "No wonder she's so spoiled. Well, such is the life of the wealthy."
"…you know, sometimes you talk like an old man. Do you do that on purpose?" Yeonseul and Daehuyn continued their conversation until the moon was high in the sky and Yeonseul insisted on Daehuyn getting adequate rest. It seemed the young man had started to grow on him too.
