Chapter 145 Kryptonian
"Sending you off."
As Lois Lane gently caressed the incredibly opulent gold coffee table, Stephen nonchalantly settled onto the sofa and remarked, "Send you? Send me where?"
Lois Lane stared in astonishment at the gold coffee table, unsure of what to say. A pure gold coffee table? The worth of this piece left her flabbergasted. Despite her significant achievements in the news industry and her respectable income at the Planet Daily, she was still taken aback by the sheer value. Nevertheless, Lois was no stranger to life's grandeur, so after her initial shock, she quickly composed herself. "You're not lacking in funds, so... what's your intention?"
"You're a reporter, and I can assist you in gathering news material. What do you think I want?" Stephen responded with a smile.
"You want me to broadcast the news to make more people aware of his existence, right? He... is he truly an alien?" Lois Lane swiftly deduced Stephen's motive. "Why? Why are you doing this?"
"Is it intriguing?" Stephen tilted his head, pondered it earnestly, then grinned. "In any case, I can provide you with detailed information about him. I may know more than he does. Not long ago, an organization superior to the FBI sought information but was turned down by me. So, Miss Lois, you should consider yourself honored."
"Hold on."
Lois took a deep breath, turned, and retrieved the cash and took out pen and paper.
...
"Let's discuss it."
"This individual hails from a planet called Krypton. Krypton's technology is light-years ahead of Earth's. Tens of millennia ago, they dispatched numerous scout ships to explore other planets suitable for Kryptonians. What you observed in the Polar Regions was a Kryptonian scout ship sent to Earth 20,000 years ago, but it failed for some reason. Resource depletion and self-indulgence led to Krypton's destruction. Prior to the cataclysm, this individual was sent to Earth by his parents. His name is Kal-El."
"He has concealed his true identity and abilities while residing on Earth for many years. You've seen him, too. His appearance is indistinguishable from that of humans. In fact, Kryptonians look identical to humans. On Krypton, they are no different from ordinary Earthlings. However, due to the differing atmospheric conditions and the sun's radiation on Earth, they possess various superhuman abilities, hence becoming Superman."
"Superman?" Lois whispered the name softly and signaled for Stephen to continue.
"Kryptonians employ genetic engineering to perpetuate their racial groups. Every Kryptonian's life path is determined at birth—worker, solider, scientist, and so forth. Their fates are predetermined. Only he was born naturally..." Stephen spoke rhythmically and clapped his hands thrice.
Lois Lane was momentarily puzzled before catching on.
"Applause for love," Stephen added, clapping three more times crisply.
Now Lois understood, and she couldn't help but smile at Stephen's ingenuity.
"His body houses Krypton's central treasure, which contains the genes of all Kryptonians. After Krypton's demise, not all of them perished. Some were imprisoned due to a coup on Krypton. This man escaped, and their leader is named Zod, the former military general of Krypton. He's determined to rebuild Krypton, and to do so, he needs to locate the central treasure. The activation of the scout ship's signal was coincidental. Hence, Zod will be arriving soon."
The scenario of aliens invading Earth has been depicted countless times in movies, but could it finally be happening in reality?
"And you? How do you know all of this?" As a reporter, it's instinctive for Lois to dig deeper.
What he said didn't sound fabricated, so... how did this person named Stephen know?
The Kryptonian, Superman named Kal-El is undeniably mysterious, but Lois Lane finds Stephen equally enigmatic.
"Aliens, nothing too extraordinary," Stephen chuckled as he stood up. "Hurry up and write the news."
"Are you leaving?" Lois hastily inquired. "How can I reach you later?"
Stephen shook his head. "I don't intend to leave. If you don't mind, I plan to accompany you during this time. Because once the news is released, I believe he will come to you."
"Is that your intention?" Lois Lane asked.
Stephen shrugged and didn't elaborate, and Lois Lane didn't press further. She turned to her computer to begin crafting the news.
...
Lois Lane had lost track of how many news articles she had written, but this particular piece of news underwent numerous revisions with meticulous care. She found herself immersed in the work, forgetting about everything else. After a while, she hit a roadblock in her progress. Lois stretched and took a break to clear her mind.
When she turned her head, she saw Stephen sitting on the sofa, raising his wrist. There was a wristband on his arm, and a virtual projection was being displayed on top of it, resembling a map.
"What is this?" Lois Lane approached Stephen curiously and asked.
"Gideon."
"Hello, Miss Lois Lane." The virtual projection abruptly changed, displaying an image of Gideon, which greeted Lois Lane.
"Hello," Lois Lane replied, somewhat dazed. "Is this... artificial intelligence?"
"The reporter's intuition is quite sharp," Stephen chuckled.
"Are you... searching for something?"
"Yes."
Stephen's lips curled up, showing signs of mischievousness. He rolled over and lay down on Lois's lap.
Lois Lane hesitated for a moment, deciding if to push him away or not, but then she heard Stephen slowly say, "The yellow sun can enhance the abilities of Kryptonians. Kryptonians on Earth can be considered gods among mortal. They have almost no weaknesses, except for a significant vulnerability to magic. Their most significant weakness on Earth is a substance called green Kryptonite, which can weaken their abilities and render them as fragile as ordinary humans."
"You're looking for this type of Kryptonite... to deal with him or Zod?" Lois Lane inquired.
"No," Stephen responded with a smirk. "I just want to see the reaction when someone in dire need of Kryptonite comes looking for it, which will be in my possession."
