Freya focused her sight on a shop sign almost two hundred meters away and could easily read the inscription. After she had thoroughly tested the effects of her new trait, she wanted to scream in joy. With an ability like this, it was only a matter of time until no adventurer would be able to stand toe to toe with her. And that was not all, there was also the second message.
[Job Change
You can select one of the following options as your primary job.
1. Elemental Mage
2. Elite Swordsman
3. Blacksmith
4. Necromancer]
A list of jobs displayed on a blue screen in front of Freya. The first two she had expected. After all, she was considered a competent mage and she mainly used elemental spells. She was an experienced dagger user and had even practiced the sword for the last week. That would explain the second option.
The last two however were completely out of her expectations. She had never done any work related to blacksmithing in her life. And for the life of her, she could not imagine how the last job could be related to her.
'The last two options exists because of me.' Art answered her question. 'I told you I worked as a blacksmith in my youth, remember? And the necromancer option is also related to one of my abilities.'
Freya was shaken to hear that. Necromancy was a forbidden field of magic. All those that dabbled in it were ostracized in the mage community. Yet it was also a powerful field of magic, without a doubt. A decade ago, only a third circle necromancer had besieged a large city of the Kraus Kingdom. It had taken a full team of fourth circle mages and a fifth circle mage to deal with him.
Then again, Art was at least five thousand years old. Perhaps in those times, this field was not so controversial. Freya once more evaluated the list, trying to decide which job to choose. By her experience with the System, any job option that she chose will give her a great boost.
'What is your suggestion?' the Female mage asked Artium. So far, his advice had been paramount to her success. She knew he would point out the best option, but in the end it was her choice.
'My advice would be to choose the 'Elite Swordsman' option.' The soul answered. 'You already have the 'Blessing of Mana' trait. Any more boost would be overkill at this point.'
'The 'Blacksmith' option is an important step in your growth but it can still wait.' Art continued, 'As for the 'Necromancer' option, no doubt, it will boost your power by several times. But it will also make it will be difficult for you to operate in human communities, which will be a crippling disadvantage for the current you.'
'That leaves the final option, 'Elite Swordsman'. Currently, close-quarter combat is a weakness of yours. While you can deal with amateur fighters, a seasoned fighter will easily outmatch you.' The Ancient Mage concluded, 'This job will greatly increase your combat power and cover for your weakness.'
Freya went over his reasoning once again. A single comment of his made her curious. 'Why do I need to learn blacksmithing?' She asked with a hint of worry. She was not particularly interested in the strenuous work of blacksmiths.
'I'm glad you asked.' Artium answered with a mental smile. 'There are two reasons for it. Firstly, the most powerful weapon masters, throughout history, have usually used a weapon of their own creation. It has something to do with understanding the will of your weapon to become one with it. But that is quite far for you.'
'The second has to do with the concept of creation.' He continued, 'It is one of the principle that help me achieve great power. It goes that only those who are capable of great creations can truly cause great destruction. Only those who create can destroy.'
Freya was once more left speechless. All the names that were famous in the current era for their power, only knew destruction. The only people that came close to following this principle, were the dwarves.
It was customary for dwarven warriors to forge their own weapons, at least the first one. But even they were not so deeply invested as to ponder on the concept of creation.
Freya shook her head to bring her focus back on the screen in front. She finally made a decision and mentally selected the second option.
[Your job has been successfully changed to 'Elite Swordsman'.]
[You have gained the passive skill 'Swordsmanship of the Lightning King'.]
[You have gained the active skill 'Blade of Lightning'.]
Freya gained two new skills after selecting her first job and she was about to check out her new skills when she realized, she had reached her destination. With a single thought, the screen vanished before her eyes and she walked into the Guild building.
She walked towards the counter and placed the bag filled with bloodied goblin ears on it. "I am here to report the completion of my quest." She handed the quest paper to the receptionist.
The receptionist barely looked up from her desk until she read the quest paper. She immediately stood up and looked at Freya and then the bloodied bag on the counter. She quickly checked the bag and confirmed its contents.
"Congratulations! You have completed quite an important quest, Miss Einar." The lady spoke, "I hope you have also reclaimed the stolen goods."
Freya quickly gave the locations of the goblin den with the stolen goods and then requested the recovery of Spider's body. She also specified where she had buried the corpse.
"You even managed to kill a magic beast. I'm sure it will pay well." The receptionist commended as she marked the locations on her map for the recovery team. "Now, if you will please summon your team to follow me. The Mayor will personally like to meet the people that completed this quest so soon."
"I have no team." Freya replied to clear any confusion. "I alone completed this quest."
The pen fell from the receptionist's hand, and her eyes went cold for a moment. Then a moment later, she let out a small laugh. "Please refrain from making such an absurd joke in the future, Miss."
"I'm not joking." Freya insisted, a little annoyed with the woman's behavior.
"Impossible! How can a mere Silver rank deal with so many goblins, let alone kill a magic beast on their own? Stop lying!" The spectacled woman shouted, as she thought even the thought of it was preposterous.
"I'm not lying." Freya shouted in return, "And if you keep saying that, I will have to report you."
The intendant calmed down after Freya's threat, but there still was a fire in her eyes, "Please follow my junior, he will lead you to the mayor office."
She pointed to scrawny young man that stood straight by the desk. The man quickly came up to her and guided her out of the building. A few minutes of walking later, he led her into a large administrative building.
The building had a beautiful architecture with white marble pillars, a slanted marble roof and white and black marble adorning the walls and the floor. Freya was quickly led into a luxurious office where an old bearded man was busy signing some papers on an expensive wooden desk.
The scrawny man quickly went up to his side and whispered something in his ear. The old man looked at Freya with a sharp look before he stood up. He walked around the table and came to her.
"My subordinate tells me that you are the one that completed the Goblin Hunting quest." He spoke in a dignified tone. "Do you mind telling me your rank?"
"I am a Silver rank currently, sir." Freya answered with respect.
"I see. That explains their reaction." The man spoke as he brought forward his hand, "Allow me to introduce myself. I am Wulfric Blackhill, the mayor of this humble city."
Freya shook his hand as the man continued, "Please forgive the rude behavior of my subordinates. They often forget that adventurer ranks are not a measure of power, but a measure of contributions. After all, every Legendary adventurer today was once a Silver rank like yourself, Miss Einar."
He motioned for her to sit down as he took a seat and continued to speak, "Now why don't you share with me your little adventure?"
