Invaders Vs Defender

The next morning, the five team members stood atop the eastern wall, accompanied by a squadron of archers. The Orc army once more approached at the sunrise, but this time they were in tight formations. The Orc leader led his forces followed by the bandits that were also in close knit formations.

The first row was filled with shield bearers and spear users. The leader, Jeera, led his forces riding his huge direwolf. Just behind him, were Kara, Roya and Othgor.

As their army arrived within a hundred meters of the wall, Jeera didn't give a speech, but turned to Kara and gave an order. The Orc mage nodded and began to cast a spell.

"Great Ancestral Lance!" Freya heard the mage shout in her tongue, and as the spell ended, enormous amounts of water vapor condensed in the air above. It tuned into a pole and ice continued to merge with it.

Freya was astonished at the amount of mana that gathered in the spell, and even at the size of the structure it was forming. When the formation came to an end, the Ice had formed a huge light blue lance, 6 meter long and a meter in radius. It was not an elegant design like a lance belonging to a noble knight, but a crude and raw design, as if carved from the bones of a huge beast.

Kara saw the finished spell and with a wave if her staff, sent the giant construct heading towards the people on the wall.

"Ariane!" Morris quickly called for his subordinate.

"I'm on it." The blonde mage had already started to prepare a spell when the orc mage had begun to cast but she had underestimated the power of the ice spell. "Flame Tsunami!"

Bright, blazing flames erupted from the wall in a five-meter line, ferociously advancing towards the ice lance like a proud predator. However, the two mages on the wall, quickly understood that the flame was no match for the coming lance and would only weaken it slightly.

Freya quickly cast a second circle spell to strengthen the fire spell, "Shearing Wind Blades!" Four crescent wind blades rushed towards the flames at high speeds.

The wind's blade easily overtook the flames and went through the flame wall. What appeared on the other side was something completely different. Crescent blades of hot white burning fire flew forwards and crashed into the approaching Ice lance.

If it were only the flames or the wind blades, they wouldn't have done much, but the combination of two spells had given birth to a spell with high cutting power. The four fire blades collided with the icy lance and cut through it like butter, reducing the giant lance into four large chunks of ice. The ice chunks then passed through the fire wall that also burned brighter than before, melting them even more, until they finally crashed into the wall.

While the spell was weakened, the chunks of ice still held enough mass to shake the wall on impact. The soldiers on the wall quickly tried to steady their feet until the shaking stopped. Ariane and Freya were shocked that the power of the mighty spell, which still held such destructive ability even after fighting two powerful spells.

"Captain, we should march out with the ground forces." Ariane suggested, "Alex will support us from the wall, but if we stay here they will just bombard us with spells from a safe distance."

Morris also agreed with the assessment and shouted, "Troops March Out! Alex support us from the walls. Maria, Ariane and Freya follow me."

Meanwhile, on the enemy's side, Kara couldn't help but growl in frustration. "A Combination spell, Dammit!"

She had hoped to humiliate Ariane with such a powerful spell and bring down the stone wall in one go, but her hopes were shattered. She was confident that her spell would have easily obliterated the weak fire spell cast by that human mage, but the wind spell that followed created a combination spell that boosted the power of both spells.

A combination spell was created when two or more mages cast spells that complimented each other. The results of the spells created something that was always greater than the sums of its parts. Unbeknownst to her, it had been completely unintentional, Freya knew nothing of combination spells and had only wanted to boost the fire spell's power with her wind spell, unknowingly creating a more powerful spell.

Kara was about to cast another powerful spell, when the large town gate opened and the human army marched out led by a tall human riding a horse, but what caught Kara's eye was Ariane following behind him.

Jeera also smiled at the sight of the approaching human army and charged with his owns troops, "For Glory!!!" He screamed in his tongue and charged on his direwolf. His troops also roared as they followed after their leader. The human bandits following behind a moment later.

The two army clashed in the middle of the field a minute later. Jeera's direwolf leaped across the troops and pounced on Morris, who used his humongous shield to swat him away. The Orc leader swung his twin axes but they were stopped by the defender's giant Warhammer. A brief struggle ensued, and the orc forced the human back with his superior strength, but Morris shoved him to the side, disengaging.

A few meters away, Freya had locked swords with Othgor. The orc tried to outmaneuver the swordswoman, but Freya was almost untouchable due to her high speed and strength. The Orcs experience kept him alive as he blocked all attacks from the human purely on instinct.

In another location on the battlefield, a circle with a fifteen-meter radius was opened up as two third circle mages duked it out in the middle. No one from the two armies dared to step foot in this circle and risk getting annihilated by the powerful spells.

Maria, on the other hand, moved through the battlefield like a fleeting wind. Easily dispatching the human bandits in a matter of moments, before even she was forced to engage two agility focused orc warriors. Even the two of them would not have been enough to stall her for long, if it was not for the blazing sun that weakened her due to her vampire nature.

From the wall in the distance, Alex targeted the orc warriors and especially focused on Roya and her wolves, stopping them from committing a massacre of the humans. His higher level and special training allowed him a greater range than the other archers on the wall, who could barely shoot at enemies that got too close to the walls.

The battle continued as the two forces clashed with great ferocity. The defenders of Havenfall, while lower in numbers, were able to overcome this disadvantage with the higher quality of their weapons and armor. Each soldier equipped with weapons and armors made of an Orichalcum-Steel alloy that far outperformed the leather, iron and rare steel armors.

The battle refused to tip in anyone's favor as the struggle continued. Freya tried to finish off her opponent, but with little success. Although Freya now matched the tall orc in the highest stat was agility, she still lacked behind in pure battle experience. All her thrust and slashes were expertly dodged or blocked by the swordsman.

On the other hand, Freya's sword style put an emphasis on evasion which allowed to her to dodge and avoid the Orc's attacks as well, putting them in a stalemate. Yet Freya could not afford to be tied up with the orc for too long because their new strategy needed her to perform certain tasks quickly and swiftly.

From the corner of her eye, she noticed that while Morris was holding his own against the nine-meter tall orc, he could only defend against the ferocious attacks. If this continued, the defender will soon be too exhausted to fight anymore.

Luckily, Freya's wound from yesterday's fight had been healed by Ariane's Magic last night, which allowed her to fight at her full potential. The mage jumped towards her opponent, skillfully parrying his thrust and using her footwork to avoid the following her attacks.

She ducked under a swing and from her lowered she fired an ice dagger at his head. Othgor's eyes widened at the frighteningly fast dagger and barely moved his head to the side, avoiding a fatal injury. The dagger slashed across the left side of his face, cutting off his left ear and leaving behind a gnarly wound.

In his haste to avoid the first ice dagger, the orc swordsman failed to anticipate the following two daggers that embedded themselves deeply into his right shoulder and his lower left ribs just below his heart, respectively. Now panicked, the orc blindly swung his sword, trying to gain some distance, but the three ice daggers that hit him had reduced his speed by 15%, allowing Freya to overtake him easily.

The swordswoman rotated around the back of the panicked orc and with a powerful horizontal slash, removed his head from the body, just like his blood brother.
