Side Story (2)

The amber-colored eyes of the eight-year-old girl shook from the gust of wind that slapped her face from peeking over the window of the moving vehicle. Her head bobbed as the carriage would sometimes pass a pit filled with murky water from the rough road they traveled on.

She wiped her still tear-stained face and sniffed in the liquid that badly wanted to excrete from her nose. She picked the edge of her eyes to clear it from any possible morning star she had and remembered what the Miss had said…

"Make sure to look presentable when you greet them, alright?" Miss Matilde combed her short hair while advising her of what to do.

It was the night of the day the young man visited them. All the children were snuggled together in Miss Matilde's room since they were also informed that tomorrow would be the day that their eldest sister, Cassandra, would be leaving.

The two were the only ones awake while the rest had fallen asleep.
