Chapter 46: Meeting with the detective

Tyler looked at the man who easily towered and cast a shadow over him.

Standing at 7 ft tall, the man looked like a giant. He wore a large trench coat that did nothing to hide his bulging arms. He had red hair and a face that gave Tyler an odd sense of familiarity even though he was clearly seeing this man for the fast time in his life.

"Excuse me," the man spoke and his voice was brimming with authority. " Is this the Calvin's residence?"

Tyler took a moment to consider whether he should lie and say 'no' but after a moment he mentally shook his head. If this man was here for trouble then Tyler could possibly take care of him especially given that Tyler was currently in peak condition so he didn't have to worry too much.

"Yes. Who's asking?" Tyler replied with an indifferent expression on his face. The man gave him a peculiar look before replying:

"Detective Rufus Hunter, RCPD," the man named Hunter said. "I have a couple of questions for Tyler Calvin."

"Dad!" a voice I had gotten familiar with recently came from behind the Detective Hunter who had now moved aside to reveal a red haired girl in the Crimson academy uniform who had been standing behind him. "I told you to use your detective voice on him! Do you want to scare him to think his in some sort of trouble?! Huh?!"

A smile grew on Tyler's face when he saw her looking his way with a slightly worried expression. How could he possibly not smile? This was the girl who had kicked the man off the bike with her sharp taekwando skills and had she not he would have had a hard time dealing with him.

"It's good to see you Rochelle," Tyler said without hiding his delight in seeing her.

"Idiot," Rochelle yelled at me. "What the hell were you thinking running off like that yesterday!"

The statement may have seemed cold but it was actually her way of worrying for him.

"Sorry I had to do things in a hurry," Tyler chuckled

Meanwhile Hunter looked at his daughter in bewilderment as he saw his daughter actually getting along with another person. He had to admit that it was a nice sight to see but he just couldn't shake of the odd feeling he got from Tyler when he first opened the door. It felt as if a slight chill of death had briefly run down his spine.

"Well at least your safe. Nate and I were worried when we didn't see you in school this whole day," Rochelle explained

"Well I appreciate the gesture," Tyler replied. "Well come on in"

Rochelle sat in the living room while Rufus Hunter and Tyler were at the dining table since the detective had several questions for him.

"So Rochelle told me what happened yesterday on your way from school," the detective went straight to the point causing Tyler to smile slightly.

"You want me to add a few things or…?" Tyler replied with a calm expression.

"I want you to tell me what happened after you took the man away?"

Tyler hadn't prepared to meet with the police any time soon but he knew that they would have made the connection sooner or later.

"He and I had a little talk and I asked him why he attacked me that's all" Tyler replied

"And you're sure there was nothing else?" Hunter asked while looking into Tyler's eyes not even seeing the slightest hint of fear in them.

'This guy…is different? But I can't put my finger around it,' Hunter thought

"Maybe there is maybe there isn't," Tyler shrugged his shoulders. "Besides it doesn't really matter I mean if anything happened to the man who would care. That's one less asshole of the streets"

Hunter felt slightly felt bitter in his heart as he silently agreed with him. The man who had mean tortured and in a severe condition was an enforcer from a gang who worked with several loan sharks. He as well as several other loan sharks had led trafficked a lot of daughters whos families were in debt and led countless others to suicide.

Reinfield City was a business as well as industrial part of Mission District. It was a good place but it also had a dark side.

Hunter sighed:

"How's your sister?" he asked which took Tyler slightly offguard

"She's good. She's safe and in her room with her friends," Tyler replied and had a relieved looked on his face which didn't go unnoticed by a keen detective like Hunter.

"Did something happen?" Hunter asked because he genuinely concerned.

"Yeah but she managed to overcome it," Tyler replied

"Heard what happened to her in school. I'm sorry you had to go through that"

"Em. Don't worry too much about it and besides I don't think she's going to be bothered anytime soon so it's good," Tyler shrugged it off as if it were a simple incident and Hunter nodded.

They sat in silence for a moment before Hunter looked into the direction of the living room before turning towards Tyler and saying:

"What your relationship with my daughter?"

"We're nothing but friends. Nothing more nothing less," Tyler replied honestly

"Well if that's the case then I'm happy for her because she's been closed off ever since her mother's death," Hunter said before looking at Tyler. "But if you ever hurt her in anyway. I promise I'll make you regret it you got that." A slight hint of coldness came from his eyes something that people who have killed are very sensitive to.

Killing intent!

Though Tyler had felt it before this one seemed to be highly concentrated though it was slightly lower than that of a fully honed warrior who had spilled blood countless times, it made Tyler wonder what may have happened in the older detective's past for him to become like that. Either way this was his friend's father and friendship was something that Tyler could never take lightly

"Don't worry unlike most people I highly value the bond and trust that comes with friendship so I'll never bring harm to her no matter what," Tyler vowed to himself and the answer seemed to satisfy Hunter somewhat.

He was about to ask Tyler something else but he got interrupted as his phone rang

"Yeah?" Hunter picked up almost instantly. After several seconds his demeanor changed

"There's been a murder…its bad Rufus," the voice on the line said in a retired voice.

"Where?"

"…"

"Alright I'm on my way," Hunter hang up after. "Something came up"

As if by prior agreement they both stood at the same time as Tyler led him through the living room where Rochelle looked away from the TV and looked at her father's game face as she called it and instantly knew that he had to go to work.

"Sweetheart something came up at work I have to go and I will probably be home late," Hunter said to her.

"Alright be safe out there," she said which caused him to chuckle lightly

"You don't have to worry about your old man kid I'll see you at home okay," he said before looking at Tyler and nodding.

Tyler nodded back. There was no need for any further words among them.

Opening the door, Hunter left the house and went straight to his black Dodge Challenger and he drove off to the scene of a crime where he was about to unknowingly step into a third world that was believed to only be a fantasy.

*****

He drove over thirty minutes to get to West Industrial Drive where infront of an apartment block were parked several police cruisers with flashing lights, ambulances were also present just in case as well as news reporters and journalists who were trying to get a scoop of what appeared to be the juiciest story they had ever had in a long time. Three men in police uniform were trying to hold off the hounds.

Parking, Hunter got out of his car and approached the 'Do Not Cross' police tape, there was no need to show his badge because he was a well known detective throughout the city. Hunter was the man who had taken down the deranged killer named Vixen Butcher and locked him away several years ago but not before his tragic loss.

Hunter simply nodded at the police men standing guard as he walked into the apartment.

The CSI team was already processing the crime scene in the spacious apartment that had white walls stained red with blood. They weren't the only things dyed red though, the furniture as well as floor. The door seemed to be loosened from it hinges and a broken wall off in the distance.

Five bodies had been placed in the center of the room.

Hunter's partner was talking to the CSI team leader who was telling him a few things about the crime scene.

Hunter looked at the horrific scene with wide eyes as it reminded him of the deranged killer's den in the sewers. These were memories he didn't want to ever remember. His partner Marcus looked his way as he could tell the pain his partner was going through.

Hunter shook his head as he said to himself. No point in getting cold feet now, Candice definitely wouldn't want that.

After clearing his head Hunter approached Marcus and the CSI leader.

"What do we have?" he asked

"You good brother?" Marcus asked in a worried voice

"Don't worry I'll be fine," Hunter replied before urging the CSI leader who was a woman in her early forties.

"There are a total of five bodies, there could be more but we can't be for sure at this point," she began explaining before walking over to the first body. It was a man who had his limbs disfigured and twisted in the less than normal ways. "This man has practically 70% of his bones crushed as well as his skull cracked severely which would suggest that he was crushed either into the ground, the wall or even through it."

Throwing someone through the wall was unheard of and practically unrealistic but as they looked at the collapsed wall in the distance Hunter couldn't help but think otherwise.

The woman walked over to the second body.

"This one has a fist sized hole in his chest. His heart was completely crushed…we can't detected any presence of gun powder so this was definitely done without the use of a gun," she explained before moving to the third body.

"Hand bruising on his neck. This man had his neck snapped by a single hand."

The fourth body.

"The head was decapitated by something extremely sharp so this completely rules out the possibility of a machete and the possibility of a sword being used is also there," she explained.

"But that doesn't make sense why would someone kill only one person with a sword. That assuming that was our killer, and the rest of these guys in completely different ways?" Hunter was thinking out loud something he usually did when working over a crime.

"Maybe it wasn't just one killer? After all we are only coming up with theories right?" Marcus suggested.

Hunter just nodded as he tried to make sense of what had possibly happened.

The woman walked over to the last body. She didn't have to say anything because this was something that Hunter had already seen five times…make it six now.

The last body looked shriveled up and hollow like an empty shell, the skin was dried up and lacked moisture and unlike the other bodies this one had two fang marks on the side of his neck.

That wasn't all though. This body was completely sucked dry of its blood.

As Hunter looked at the body he couldn't help but have a bad feeling I his gut about what was to before on a city like Reinfield City because lately a lot of strange things have been happening and that also included the sudden catching of fire of Mac-constructions headquarters where many people had perished the previous night and it was only a few minutes away from the apartment building they were currently in.
