CH 03: A tutorial is vital in a video game, especially in an online game 2/2

"Not bad rookie, but if that is all you-"

"Skip all."

Once again, Hao decides to skip all the dialogue, wanting to finish the tutorial now, and get exp from the quest.

"Now, go and show me what you got in combat."

Coming out from the other side of the stadium gate, a grey wolf starts to come out and walk toward Hao, with a growl and drool coming out of its mouth.

Hungry dire wolf

|Tip: Perfect timing is a combat technique that every class have. Follow up your attack with another while timing the attack perfectly would increase the damage by 10%|

|Tip: As a rogue, you can perform perfect execution. You can perform perfect execution by only using your bare hands and weapon as a finishing attack. When completed, it would regenerate some of your health and mana and reduce your cooldown skill by half of the current cooldown.|

Hao only hummed, seeing the tip, before dismissing the pop-up screen.

When coming to timing, there are two types of timing in combat; there is perfect timing that exists in every class. But then there is a specific type of combat timing, like here in rogue, where they have perfect execution, while a knight would have a perfect slash or a warrior with a perfect guard.

These specific types of timing would be called "Just Frame",—a term used in a fighting game for the same reason.

This might be weird to use a fighting game term in an MMO game, but the combat system in GEP has a lot of similarities to a fighting game.

Hao put his guard up, ready to fight the dire wolf in front of him. While he knows this game's combat like the back of his hand, he is not playing a class that he is similar to right now. So he needs to be more careful how he approaches to combat.

Rogue has a particular type of combat style; they only used their bare hands and feet in a fight and would only use their weapon as a finisher to attack string or execute. So rogue, the damage is less significant compared to other DPS classes.

However, as a trade-off, rogue attack strings can be tough to block against; not only that, they are fast attacks; a rogue could throw a punch and then follow up with a kick, a throw, another punch or something else entirely.

In other words, rogues have a lot of tools when it comes to their mix-up.

Hao slowly approaches the wolf from the front; while he could certainly turn invisible and hit the wolf from behind, he wants to get used to the rogue combat style first.

The wolf leaps forward, and Hao ducks down before throwing an uppercut that lands squarely on the stomach, followed by another punch that immediately lands on the wolf's face. When the first land, Hao can hear a specific cracking sound indicating a Just Frame attack.

While the wolf is still in the air, Hao follows up with a side kick at the wolf's head before spinning 360 degrees and landing an upward kick that sends the wolf sky high with a massive cracking sound.

"Still alive, huh?" Hao muttered while looking at the wolf quickly descending from the sky, "Perfect."

Grabbing his dagger and swinging it upward, the dagger quickly stabs through the wolf's head, killing it immediately.

"That was only five hits, and I only land two just frames. That was bad."

This is the combat system in GEP, which is heavy, inspired by a fighting game, where your purpose is to land a combo on your enemy to defeat them. It's simple enough in PvE, but when it comes to PvP, it becomes a mind game because, unlike a fighting game where it is a one v one, this game has more factors where all sorts of factors can determine the end of a fight.

"Good job, rookie! Look like you know how to handle your kni-."

"Skip all." Hao said.

"Let's see how you will deal with more than one enemy."

Just like that, three more wolves come out of the stadium and seem ready to attack Hao at any moment.

"Now, this is what I'm talking about." Hao said with a smile that seemed delighted at the challenge in front of him.

This time without further ado, one of the wolves leaps toward Hao, who quickly intercepts it with a dagger swing, slashing the wolf's face and sending it back toward the ground. Another two wolves didn't wait around and ran toward Hao.

Hao didn't panic and suddenly turned invisible, causing the two wolves to lose sight of him, and he could only look around in confusion.

The next thing the wolf hear is the sound of flesh being, which the two wolves quickly turn around to see one of their being cut down by Hao from behind, and with backstab buff, Hao can kill the injured wolf instantly.

+100 exp (+100% bonus)

The other wolves quickly run toward Hao again. One jumps toward Hao with its jaw open while the other is still running on the ground, readying to bite on Hao's leg.

Hao reacts quick and lays low before doing a quick leg swipe intercepting the wolf that is on the ground, knocking it down, and then Hao quickly follows up with a swing with his dagger, trying to interrupt the wolf that jumps toward like what he did previously.

However, unlike before, Hao's dagger swing missed because the dagger was too short and could not reach the wolf in the air making Hao wide open.

'Shit!' Hao thought, his eyes wide.

The wolf lands on him and starts biting Hao's shoulder, causing him to lose his balance. Hao quickly calms down and stabs the wolf on him in the stomach with his dagger. Before the wolf can let go of him because of the pain, Hao grabs the wolf by its head and stab it repeatedly with a cracking sound, killing the wolf right then and there.

+100 exp (+100% bonus)

With another wolf on the ground finally recovering, Hao did give that wolf a chance and quickly rushed forward and kicked the wolf right in the face sending it flying back a bit with a cracking sound

Hao rolls his shoulder a bit toward the injured wolf on the ground.

'That was the bad habit on my part. I thought I was using a sword and judged my attack distance wrong. Old habits died hard, I guess.' Hao mused, thinking back at his mistake with his attack reach.

Hao reached the wolf and quickly stomped at it repeatedly before pushing his feet down on the wolf's head.

"What a pain." Hao said before doing a sweep, sending the wolf up in the air by half a meter before finishing it with a backward kick with a cracking sound, killing the final wolf.

'That should do it. Now next to my equipment.'

Weapon: Standard rogue dagger

"Now then, let's leave this place."

Hao quickly headed toward the door and left the stadium without a word.

Hao is back in the same room, opening his eyes again before entering the portal. Not wasting any time, he quickly left the room, headed outside the guild, and was ready for his next step.

'Let's see... What do I need... first I need to reach level 20 for the sub-class that I want. Next is get the three-item that I needed, and that should do it now with the current build I'm going for.' Hao thought to himself, making the plan for the future.

"Well, the boring part of the game is over. I guess it's time to begin levelling my character. But what is the best quest for gaining exp?" Hao muttered to himself while walking around the broken town.

Right now, all he wants to do is gain level for his character, and the best way to do it in MMO for a beginning character is, of course, to do quests. After all, you can't just go outside and kill some monsters and hope to gain level fast, which doesn't make sense.

While you certainly can, that is not the best way to level up in an MMO.

So, Hao with that in mind, Hao starts to go around town, accept all the beginning as many as possible, and begin his levelling experience.
