The first night Becca spent in the new city to which she moved to was an uneventful one. It was really a new start for her because she got rid of every single thing that tied her to her old life. Now that the divorce was finalized, she could take on her maiden name and no one would ever know that she was once married to Billionaire Ryan Harris … or so she hoped.
That first night, she retired to bed early, and for the first time in over a month, slept as soundly as a newborn. She still felt a little under the weather, but the fact that everything was now over and she could get on with her life, however it would look from now on, was extremely comforting. The next morning, she got up early and for the first time, came outside to get a good look at the house that she had bought. It was a small house, but it was just perfect as she was tired of large houses. Besides, since she was going to be living alone, there was no need for extravagance. She needed a house that she could take care of by herself and this one was just perfect.
Becca tried not to dwell on the sudden deep hatred that she had for Ryan. Just thinking about him caused her heart to pound in fury and she wished fervently that she had never met him in her life.
“He would pay dearly for all that he has done to me!” She vowed to herself fiercely, her face set in a frown as she remembered all that she had gone through recently
“Yeah right.” An inner voice told her. “How exactly is that going to happen? He is a billionaire who can have any woman he wants, plus he does not even give a flying fuck about you, so what on earth are you going to do to him?”
Becca ignored the voice and just delighted in basking in the warmth of the bright sun. Ryan was going to pay for humiliating her and believing such lies about her, one way or the other. She was sure of it.
That evening, still feeling really ill, she had to make plans to visit a hospital, especially when she threw up everything that she had had for dinner. Also, the weak feeling came back full force and the dizziness also returned, so that after cleaning up the mess that she had created, she took some ibuprofen and sat in front of the small fireplace, trying to control her weakness. She did not know any hospitals around here, but a quick search online showed her some of the nearest ones to her, so the next morning, she went to see a doctor.
The middle-aged and kind looking man examined her and asked about her symptoms, then raised an eyebrow, smiled indulgently, and asked,
“Have you taken a pregnancy test yet, Becca?”
Becca shook her head firmly and before he could even insinuate what she knew he was going to insinuate next, told him.
“There is no point. I can’t get pregnant.”
“Oh? Why do you say so, if I may ask?”
“Well, you see, I had a miscarriage, let’s see…about two years ago. The doctor said it would be difficult for me to take in again and since then, my husb … sorry ex-husband and I have been trying to get pregnant, to no avail. We were even planning to go do fertility tests before we, um, parted ways.” Becca told him, with the full confidence of one who knew what she was saying.
“I see. Anyway, your doctor didn’t say it would be impossible for you to get pregnant, did he?”
“Well, no but…” Becca trailed off, staring at the man in confusion, her eyes begging him to take back all that he was saying, as though if he took them back, everything would be fine again.
“I’ll bet my bottom dollar that you’re pregnant, Becca, but still take a blood test to confirm, then come back immediately so I can properly examine you.” The doctor insisted, giving her a sympathetic touch on the hand. He could tell she was really scared, and considering the fact that she said that she just got divorced, he couldn’t blame her.
“Of course, doctor. I’ll do that right away. Where can I take one? God, please, I can’t be pregnant. I just can’t. Why now?” Becca murmured to herself, almost on the verge of tears. Why was all of this happening to her, and in such a short time frame too?
The doctor described the part of the hospital in which she could take the test, but Becca decided to take the test the next day, suddenly feeling weak, boneless, and drained. A baby? She was going to have a baby? As she walked, she reviewed all the symptoms that she had been having. The dizziness, headaches, crying spells and all the other symptoms that she had chalked up to stress, and the toll that the divorce was taking on her. But most glaring was the fact that she had missed her period, but had not noticed until now because of all that had been going on. Her period was always on time, so it was clear that something was wrong. If she was indeed pregnant, then she needed time to put things into perspective. If this man was right and she was carrying a baby, then that means everything had changed.
She drove home on autopilot from the doctor’s office, hardly aware of her surroundings or what was going on around her. The farther she drove from the hospital, the surer she was that the doctor was wrong. She was certain of it. What did the doctor know about the numerous times that she and Ryan had tried to get pregnant before eventually giving up? In fact, they had made preparations to see a fertility specialist about three months ago. She could not be pregnant. She knew it as well as she knew her name…so why was she still troubled?
