6. We Don't Talk About Bruno

Once Abuela and Isabela had left the frame Mirabel appeared and walked up to Bruno's door. She opened the door, having to push and lean with all of her weight to get it open.

She was surprised when she entered to find a small room with one wall pouring sand. Maybe that was what happened when people left? Maybe their rooms become small and have only a small reminder of who they were and their power?

She walked up to the sand placing her hand under it.

MIRABEL- "Hmm. Casita. Can you turn off the sand?"

The tiles bounced at the threshold showing that Casita couldn't do anything.

"How do you turn off the sand?" Mirabel asked as she turned to her Tío.

"I don't know. It just always kinda did for me."

MIRABEL- "You can't help in here?"

"You didn't know that Casita can't affect our rooms?" Camilo asked.

"I didn't know that." Antonio said.

"Well, yeah. But you're little, so."

"I Am not!"

"Are too."

"Am not."

"Are too."

"Am not."

"Are too."

"Are not." Camilo countered waiting for reverse psychology to kick in.

"Ha! You just said I'm not." Antonio said sticking his tongue out.

"What! How did you? You were supposed to…"

"Anyways," Mirabel said as she interrupted Camilo and Antonio. "I never got my own room so how was I supposed to know?" She flinched as she registered what she had just said. It slipped out of her mouth so easily.

"You've been living in this house for fifteen years and you didn't know?"

"No one ever told me!"

"We've had how many sleepovers?"

MIRABEL- "I'll be fine. I need to do this. For you, for Abuela, maybe a little for me. Find the vision. Save the mirac- Woah. Ugh. Woah. Oh, hello."

"Hey! You found Toco!" Antonio said pausing the movie.

"Huh?" Mirabel was confused. Actually, everyone was confused.

"All my toucan friends were telling me about their friend Toco. That's Toco! Tío Bruno, why didn't you tell me? You have rat friends and a toucan friend." Antonio questioned.

"I, uh, didn't know he was there." Bruno said.

"I can't wait to tell everyone that I know where Toco is. Is it okay if he comes into my room to say hi to his friends sometimes?"

"Sure kid. He can come to your room whenever he wants."

"Thanks, Tío Bruno!"

MIRABEL- "Lot of stairs, but at least I have a friend… nope he flew away immediately."

"What? Oh Toco, how could you leave Mirabel like that?" Antonio shook his head in disappointment, leaving the rest of the Madrigals finding it so difficult not to laugh.

MIRABEL- "Alright. Welcome to the family Madrigal. There's so many stairs in the Casa Madrigal. You'd think there'd be another way to get so high 'cause we're magic, but no."

"I mean… I used to just use my vines whenever I wanted to get to the top." Isabela said.

MIRABEL- "Magical, how many stairs fit in here? Bruno, your room is the worst!"

"Tell me about it. Now imagine having to do that every night just to get to bed." Bruno said from beside her. She shuddered at the idea.

Once Mirabel had reached the top there was a large gap.

MIRABEL- "Come on…"

"Was there supposed to be a bridge there or something?" Mirabel asked.

"Nope, there was just more sandstone as a bridge thingy." Bruno answered.

MIRABEL- "Okay, I can do this."

"Mirabel Madrigal, tell me that you are not about to do what I think you are." Julieta said.

MIRABEL- "Oh. Woah! Ha, whoo!"

"Mirabel Madrigal. You could have gotten hurt! And no one would have known!" Her Mamá scolded.

"Sorry, mamá."

"That's a long way down." Luisa said as the stone fell and a loud noise signifying that it had reached the bottom yelled out.

As Mirabel and the newly dubbed Toco entered further into Bruno's room they were both startled by either Toco knocking pottery or Rats jump scaring the two. Finally, Toco had decided that he had had enough.

MIRABEL- "Quitter!"

"No! Toco! Really! I am going to have a few words with you later." Antonio said to the toucan on screen.

Mirabel entered the new room that had been found.

MIRABEL- "Empty."

The screen cut to a shot behind her as the door slowly closed.

"And here comes Tío Bruno's first appearance?" Luisa asked.

"Nope. Not yet." Mirabel answered.

Once the door had slammed a green glow from below Mirabel lit up the room. A bunch of small gree dots from under sand shone brightly. Mirabel lent down to investigate digging at the sand. It revealed a shard of green glass.

MIRABEL- "What's hurting the magic?"

Mirabel turned the shard of glass so the straight edge faced the floor. It then cut to Abuela who was sweeping up leftover flower petals from where Isabela had walked. Before long it cut back to Mirabel in Bruno's tower.

She dug again to find another shard connecting the two. Unbeknownst to her cracks were beginning to grow in the room around her. She grabbed for a third shard and connected to the other two as the cracks grew larger and larger.

She tilted the three shards a bit before seeing an image of herself in the glass.

MIRABEL- "Me?"

Sand fell on top of the glass in her hands, causing her to look up. When she did she saw the room around her breaking. She frantically dug at the sand, doing her best to go as fast as she could to collect each and every shard.

She ran to the door and began slamming herself against it trying to pry it open.

"And now Tío Bruno appears?" Luisa asked again worried for her little sister's safety as her parent's eyes couldn't seem to leave the screen.

"Uh-uh." Bruno said, also unable to tear his eyes away from the action.

Suddenly the door swung open and Mirabel came flying out in a wave of sand.

Everyone including Mirabel let out a breath that no one realised they were holding.

As she exited the room she bumped into Abuela.

ABUELA- "Where are you coming from in such a hurry?"

MIRABEL- "I'm sorry, I was…

ABUELA- "What is in your hair?

Before Mirabel could give an answer Luisa ran in.

LUISA- "My gift! I'm losing my gift!

ABUELA- "What?"

LUISA- "Mirabel and I were having this little talk about me carrying too much. So, I tried not to carry so much, but then I realised it was putting me behind. And I was going to let everyone down. And I felt really bad, so I was grabbing all the donkeys, but then when I went to throw the donkeys in the barn they were… heavy!"

ABUELA- "What did you do? What did you say to her?"

MIRABEL- "Nothing I… I don't…"

ABUELA- "Mirabel. I have to go get the Guzmáns for Isabela's engagement. Stay away from Luisa until I can talk to her. Tonight we can't have any more problems. And whatever you're doing, stop doing it!"

oOoOoOoOo

The screen changed to Mirabel in her room setting out a few pieces of Bruno's vision.

MIRABEL- "Why am I in your vision, Bruno?"

A loud crash of thunder caused Mirabel to jump.

MIRABEL- "Tía! geez."

PEPA- "Sorry, sorry. I didn't mean to… shoo, shoo, shoo, shoo! I just wanted to get the last of Toitño's things and then I heard the name we don't speak. Great, now I'm thundering. And that thunder will lead to a drizzle and a drizzle will lead to a sprinkle… Clear skies, clear skies, clear skies."

MIRABEL- "Tía Pepa? if Bruno… if he were to have a vision about someone, what would it mean for them?"

PEPA- "We don't talk about Bruno."

MIRABEL- "I know, it's just hypothetically, if he saw you…

PEPA- "Mirabel, please, we have to get ready for the Guzmáns."

MIRABEL- "I just wanna know if it was generally positive or like less positive?"

FÉLIX- "It was a nightmare!"

PEPA- "Félix!"

FÉLIX- "Hey, she needs to know Pepi, she needs to know."

PEPA- "We don't talk about Bruno!"

FÉLIX- "He would see something terrible, then boom it would happen."

PEPA- "We don't talk about Bruno!"

MIRABEL- "What if you don't understand what he saw?"

FÉLIX- "Well then you better figure it out, because he was coming for you."

"Wow… you guys really painted me as the villain, huh." Bruno said to no one in particular but still causing Pepa and Félix to dip their heads in shame.

Pepa:

(Singing)

We don't talk about Bruno, no, no, no

We don't talk about Bruno, but

It was my wedding day

"Really! Really Pepa!" Bruno yelled. "You always start off there." He said. "How many times do I have to apologise? I didn't mean to set you off." Bruno said.

"I know. But hermano, it was my wedding day. My wedding day!" Pepa said.

"And I apologised." Bruno said once again.

"I know. But still."

Félix:

It was our wedding day

Pepa:

We were getting ready

And there wasn't a cloud in the sky

Félix:

No clouds allowed in the sky

Pepa:

Bruno walks in with a mischievous grin

Félix:

Thunder!

Pepa:

You're telling the story or am I?

Félix:

I'm sorry, mi vida, go on

Pepa:

Bruno says, "It looks like rain"

"That was only because it genuinely looked like rain. I was trying to help you! Then you had a spaz attack."

"A panic attack! Bruno! You have no idea how stressful that day was for me!"

"I know how stressful that day was! I was trying to help! That's why I was warning you."

Félix:

Why did he tell us?

"To warn you!" Bruno yelled.

Pepa:

In doing so, he floods my brain

Félix:

Abuela gets the umbrellas

Pepa:

Married in a hurricane

Félix:

What a joyous day but anyway

Pepa & Félix:

We don't talk about Bruno, no, no, no

We don't talk about Bruno

Dolores:

Hey, grew to live in fear of Bruno stuttering or stumbling

I can always hear him sort of muttering and mumbling

I associate him with the sound of falling sand, ch-ch-ch

It's a heavy lift with a gift so humbling

Always left Abuela and the family fumbling

Grappling with prophecies they couldn't understand

Do you understand?

"Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. You knew?" Camilo said to his sister.

"Super hearing dummy."

"Wait…" Mirabel said. Before skipping back.

"What?" Camilo asked.

"Look near the column on the left." She said. "Is that?"

"That's a person." Luisa said very confused.

"There's no way." Mirabel said as she turned to her uncle sitting next to her.

"Look there it is again." Félix pointed out.

"Tío Bruno…" Mirabel said as she leaned towards him.

"Is he dancing?" Camilo said as he pointed at the shadow in the background.

"There's no way." Pepa said

Everyone turned to look at Bruno.

"I needed some arepas okay. I ran out." He admitted. "It's not my fault that you guys decided to break out into a killer song. I mean, what was I supposed to do? Not dance? Okay psycho."

"What do you mean you ran out of arepas?" Abuela said.

"Bruno, you came out from wherever you have been hiding to come back for my food?" Julieta said, clearly touched by her brother's actions.

"I mean… it wasn't really that hard. The hardest part was avoiding you guys. I normally do it while you're sleeping."

"And that's not creepy at all," Camilo said. "But seriously Tío the fact that you went in and out of the encanto all in one night for arepas and you say 'the hardest part was avoiding you guys' hits hard. Respect."

"Woah, what did you just say?" Bruno asked facing his oldest nephew.

"Respect?"

"No, before that."

"You went in and out of the encanto in one night?"

Bruno laughed. "You guys think I left the encanto?"

"What?" Everyone asked.

"You never left the encanto?" Pepa asked.

"Where did you go?" Julieta added.

"Do not tell me you slept outside." Abuela said.

"I, well… you see. I-" A hand slapped over Bruno's mouth.

"Shhhh. Spoilers." Mirabel said.

"Mirabel. Spoilers are our last worries right now. Bruno. Where did you stay?" Abuela asked.

"If you watch the movie, you'll find out." Mirabel answered as she hit play.

Camilo:

A seven-foot frame,

rats along his back

"Woah… a little bit of an overestimation don't you think?" Bruno said to his sobrino.

"I was five when you left okay."

When he calls your name it all fades to black

Yeah, he sees your dreams and feasts on your screams (Hey)

Pepa & Camilo:

We don't talk about Bruno, no, no, no (We don't talk about Bruno)

Dolores:

No, No

Pepa & Camilo:

We don't talk about Bruno

Dolores:

We don't talk about Bruno

Townsperson 5:

He told me my fish would die, the next day, dead

"Well, maybe, if you took care of it properly it wouldn't have died." Bruno said.

Ensemble:

No, no

Townsperson 1:

He told me I'd grow a gut and just like he said

"Maybe don't eat as many fatty foods?" Bruno called out.

Ensemble:

No, no

Townsperson 6:

He said that all my hair would disappear, now, look at my head

"Yeah.. no. That was bound to happen sooner or later."

Ensemble:

No, No

Your fate is sealed when your prophecy is read

"Not all the time!" Bruno yelled out. "See, that's the problem. That's what I was telling you about." She nudged Mirabel. "I can see the future but it doesn't mean that people can't change it."

Isabela:

He told me that the life of my dreams

Would be promised, and someday be mine

He told me that my power would grow

Like the grapes that thrive on the vine

Abuela:

Óye, Mariano's on his way

Dolores:

He told me that the man of my dreams

Would be just out of reach

Betrothed to another

"Woah… hold on. What. Dolores, you had a crush on Mariano. While he was with Isabela?" Camilo said.

"I liked him before he and Isabela were together."

"Why didn't you say anything?" Pepa said.

"Because I didn't want to be that person mamá."

It's like I hear him, now

Isabela:

Hey sis, I want not a sound out of you

Dolores:

It's like I can hear him now, I can hear him now!

Mirabel:

Um, Bruno

Yeah, about that Bruno

I really need to know about Bruno

Give me the truth and the whole truth, Bruno!

Camilo

Isabela, your boyfriend's here

Abuela & Isabela:

Time for dinner!

Camilo:

A seven-foot frame, rats along his back

Félix:

I'm sorry mi vida go on

"This is chaotic… I don't know who to follow." Abuela said.

Isabela:

Like the grape that thrive on the vine, on the vine

Dolores:

Always left Abuela and the family fumbling

Grappling with prophecies they couldn't understand

Do you understand

Dolores & Isabela:

And I'm fine, and I'm fine, and I'm fine, I'm fine

"Are you sure? Cause you guys saying that doesn't make it seem like you're fine."

"You want the real answer or the fake one?" Isabela said.

Ensemble:

He's here

Don't talk about Bruno, no

Mirabel:

Why did I talk about Bruno?

Ensemble:

Not a word about Bruno

Mirabel:

I never should have brought up Bruno

"Wait. Julieta, Agustín, Luisa and Antonio weren't in that." Bruno pointed out.

"I was a little busy having a crisis to sing Tío." Luisa said

"I didn't know you so…" Antonio added.

"I can't sing and she's Julieta." Agustín pointed to his wife. "Let's be serious, she wouldn't talk bad about her worst enemy." Agustín said

"Yes, she would." Both Bruno and Pepa said together.

"Trust us… we've seen it." Pepa said.

"It's terrifying." Bruno second.

oOoOoOoOo

AGUSTÍN- "Miraboo. Got your party pants on? 'Cause I…"

"Busted." Mirabel said to herself.

MIRABEL- " I… broke into Bruno's tower, I found his last vision. The family's in trouble. the magic is dying. The house is breaking. Luisa's gift is fading. And I think it's all because of me?"

"Wow… that's a lot of pressure when you say it like that." Isabela said.

"Really? Hadn't noticed." Mirabel said sarcasm dripping from every word.

MIRABEL- "Pá?"

AGUSTÍN- "We say nothing. Abuela wants tonight to be perfect. Until the Guzmáns leave, you did not break into Bruno's tower. The magic is not dying. The house is not breaking. Luisa's gift is not fading. No one will know. Just act normal. No one has to know."

DOLORES- "I know. Hmm."

MIRABEL- "She's gonna tell everyone."

ABUELA- "Time to eat!"

AGUSTÍN- "Miercoles."

oOoOoOoOo

ABUELA- "The Guzmáns and the Madrigals together will be so good for the encanto."

SEÑORA GUZMÁN- "Yes. Then let's hope tonight is not a horrible disaster."

"She jinxed it! That's the problem. She jinxed it." Bruno said as he pointed to the elder Guzmán.

ABUELA- "To a perfect night. Salud."

ALL- "Salud."

Mirabel and Dolores sat there having a staring contest. Knowing if someone broke eye contact they were doomed.

MARIANO- "Avocado?"

And… eye contact was broken. They were doomed. When Mirabel caught sight of Dolores again she was already spilling to Camilo.

DOLORES- "... Bruno's vision."

Camilo seemed to choke on air as he began to shapeshift into Mirabel then Bruno then back to himself.

FÉLIX- "Camilo. Fix your face.

Camilo shook his head to return to his natural form.

ISABELA- "Water?"

Just like that eye contact was broken again. But this time Camio was telling his Papá.

CAMILO- "... Bruno's vision.

Caught by surprise Félix spat water all over Mariano and Camilo had to try so very hard not to laugh.

ABUELA- "Mirabel."

MIRABEL- "Hmm?"

ABUELA- "The cream, please."

MIRABEL- "Pá, the cream?"

When Mirabel turned her attention back to the issue at hand Tío Félix was already telling Tía Pepa.

FÉLIX- "... Bruno's vision.

A storm cloud grew and grew until it cover the entire table.

ABUELA- "Pepa, the cloud."

PEPA- "Clear skies. Clear skies. Clear skies."

Julieta seemed like the only Madrigal who had no idea what was going on. And it didn't take long until she did

PEPA- "… Bruno's vision."

Mirabel did her very best to avoid her Mamá's gaze. Then she noticed a large crack forming underneath her.

"We are all great at secrets in La Familia Madrigal." Bruno said in a similar tune to that of the first song. Causing Mirabel to smile.

MIRABEL- "Huh?"

MARIANO- "Mirabel. Everything okay?"

AGUSTÍN- "Everything is great. She's just excited. For you to propose. Which uh, you should do."

MIRABEL- "Yes."

AGUSTÍN- "As fast as you can."

MARIANO- "Uh, I was actually gonna…"

MIRABEL- "You were actually gonna! Great!"

She quickly turned her oldest sister's chair to face Mariano.

SEÑORA GUZMÁN- "Well. Well, well, since everyone here has a talent, my Mariano wanted to begin with a song! Luisa, could you bring over the piano?"

LUISA- "Okay."

"Way to rub it in." Luisa said.

MIRABEL- "Uh, It's actually family tradition to sing after."

Mirabel shoved him out of his chair and onto his knees.

MARIANO- "Isabela, most graceful of all Madrigals."

Then she noticed a crack forming not too far away. And decided that jumping on it was the best way to fix the issue.

MARIANO- "Um…"

MIRABEL- "You're doing great."

MARIANO- "The most perfect flower in this entire encanto."

"Wait a second. Michael, no!" Antonio called out.

"Let me guess." Isabela said. "That's Michael?" She pointed to the animal on the screen.

"Yes! And he's being very naughty."

MIRABEL- "No!"

MARIANO- "Will you marry…"

"And Freddy?" Antonio called out again. "I'm so sorry that they were being bad during dinner. I'll talk to them after Toco."

MIRABEL- "No!"

SEÑORA GUZMÁN- "What is happening?"

DOLORES- "Mirabel found Bruno's vision. She's in it. She's going to destroy the magic. And now we're doomed.

TOWNSPEOPLE- "Felicidades! Oh."

"Bad timing!" Félix called out in the same tone.

"Did the pastor just, sign the cross at us?" He asked doing the same movement.

oOoOoOoOo

ABUELA- "Señora, por favor!"

Abuela called out ash she chased after the Guzmáns.

MIRABEL- "Abuela, please! There's gotta be an explanation."

ISABELA- "I hate you!"

LUISA- "Uh, I'm a loser!"

AGUSTÍN- "Luisa!"

PEPA- "What did you do?"

MIRABEL- "I'm not doing anything! It's Bruno's vision! It's…"

"Way to throw me under the bus."

"Sorry."

Mirabel's attention was captured by four rats running each with a piece of the vision.

MIRABEL- "Huh?"

She chased after them.

ABUELA- "The magic is strong! Everything is fine! We are the Madrigals! Mirabel!"
