89. Came Here To Forget

Thanks for the reviews on the last chapter. I really appreciate them.

Adam punched the horn again and could hear a chorus of horns all around him. This was the worst traffic jam he had ever been in and he really was getting frustrated. "Come on!" he yelled and he honked the horn again, they had left the house two hours ago and they hadn't moved off the freeway yet.

"What's going on?" Kim asked weakly.

"Don't know, think there's been an accident"

"Oh Adam!" Kim called out again and Adam turned around in his seat and saw Kim doubled over again.

"Another contraction?" Kim nodded "They are coming right on top of each other" He took one of her hands in his and she squeezed it hard.

"I think the baby is coming right now"

Adam swore and turned back around in the seat, they needed to get to a hospital right now. Or his daughter would be born on the side of the road. And that's not what he wanted and he was sure that Kim wouldn't want that either.

The traffic was moving at very slow pace and Adam could just make out a patrol car at the front of the traffic, directing the three lanes into one. At this rate it was going to take a really long time to get to the hospital, and at this rate they were more likely to be giving birth in the car. "I am trying to get there as soon as possible Darlin'" Adam said. No sooner had he finished his sentence when Kim screamed out again as another contraction hit her

"Adam! I need to push! I can't hold on anymore, she's coming!" she gasped in pain. He realized that his daughter was coming right here, right now whether he or Kim were ready or not.

He pulled over onto the side of the road and hopped out of the car and got into the backseat with Kim "What are you doing Adam?" Burgess asked in a tired voice.

"Delivering our baby" Adam announced.

"WHAT?" Kim cried as she looked over at her husband "Are you kidding me?" she cried before another contraction broke over her.

"We really don't have much of a choice Kim, this traffic ain't moving and the baby is coming"

"Do you even know what you're doing?" Kim asked once her contraction ended.

"Sort of, when I was in uniform I watched when the doctor delivered Jackson. How hard can it be?"

"Sir you can't stop here" A cop explained as he approached their car.

Adam grabbed his detective badge from the glove compartment and showed it to the uniformed officer "I am Detective Adam Ruzek, my wife is in labor, so you need to back the hell out of my business"

"Ok" The officer replied "I'll radio for an ambulance Detective, do you need any assistance?"

Adam didn't like the idea of any other man looking at Kim's unless he had MD after his name.

"We're fine thanks"

"Adam?" Sylvie said as she approached their car, her vibrant bonde hair tied up in a pony tail. "Do you need me to help?"

"Get over here" Kim yelled as she fought through another contraction.

Sylvie came over to the side of the car and introduced herself to Adam as the officer moved off to radio for an ambulance.

She smiled and then she turned to Burgess "Kim?"

"Oh Sylvie, thank God" Kim sighed with relief.

"You sure you know what you're doing?" Adam asked almost in disbelief of the situation at hand.

"I think I've got it under control" Sylvie explained as she looked from Adam to Kim. "How far apart are your contractions, Kim?"

"They seem to be coming every two minutes" Adam answered.

"Alright then" she replied. "Kim, I am going to check how dilated you are ok?"

Kim really wasn't really thrilled about Sylvie sticking her hands in her by the side of a busy freeway, but it was better her than Adam trying to deliver the baby. "Adam, why don't you support Kim from behind while I go to my car and get my bag?"

Adam didn't need to be told twice, he hurried around to the other side of the car and opened the door, climbing in behind his wife and pulling her toward him.

Sylvie returned a few moments later and had a pair of latex gloves on and some towels "Everything is going to be OK"

"Are you sure?" Kim asked. Hot tears slipping from her eyes and down her cheeks from not only the terrible pain radiating through her body, but the humiliation that she was going to have her baby on the side of the road and someone she considered a good friend was going to have to do it.

"Alright then let's meet this little girl"

Kim nodded "We're going to have our baby, darlin'" Adam whispered.

Sylvie climbed into the car as well and draped on towel over Kim's lower half so it would shield her from the growing number of people that had decided to see what was going on. "Ok Kim, you're at ten centimetres. On your next contraction I want you to push"

"No, no we just paid this car off. I'll be OK. Can't you just call the station and tell them to come? I'll hold off. I promise" Kim insisted "I just won't push, I'll wait till we get to a hospital"

Sylvie looked over at Adam and Kim and shook her head "In this traffic it will take an ambulance at least forty minutes to get here and we'll never make it to Med, besides its too late now Kim the baby is crowning"

Kim looked up at Adam with fear in her eyes and it took everything Adam had to make sure he didn't show the same level of fear he was feeling on his face. "You got this, Burgess ok? I know this is not how we wanted to meet our daughter. But she's almost here and what a story we're going to have when we do meet her"

Kim groaned and reluctantly nodded "Ok"

Sylvie smiled "Alright Kim here we go, big push"

Kim mustered up all her strength and pushed as hard as she could and she squeezed Adam's hands to try and combat the pain. "Awww God. It hurts!" she screamed

"Let's take it down a level, Burgess" Adam said as he looked around the car at the crowd that had formed.

"Shut up, Adam!" Kim groaned as she leaned back against him.

"Ok" Adam said quietly as he placed a kiss on Kim's shoulder.

"Don't do that" Kim groaned as she moved away from him. "I can have this baby without you touching me"

"I know you can" Adam assured.

The contraction subsided and Kim flopped back against him "We're never having sex. Ever again."

Adam chuckled and pressed a kiss to her forehead "We'll see" he whispered.

"Ok Kim another big push" Kim took a deep breath and pushed again, her race turning red with the effort "Your crowning Kim, keep going"

The pain was intense, and Kim wished she was lying in a hospital right now where she could be taking something to take the edge off the contractions. She was an idiot to think she could have made it thought a water birth. She cursed herself for being a fool and trying to labor in the tub at the apartment instead of just coming to the hospital like anyone with common sense would've done. No home birth, no hospital birth, none of that. All she had was her newly paid off car and a bunch of strangers looking at her.

"Big push Kim, that's it the head is almost out" Kim found more strength that she didn't even know she possessed and pushed as hard as she could. "Okay stop Kim, the head is out"

Once Kim knew the baby's head was out she found herself able to take a minute to relax. Knowing that the worst part was over. "Abigail's almost here Adam, we almost have our daughter. Jack's gonna be the best brother"

"I know Kim" he said as he pressed a kiss to her hair "You're doing so good, Darlin"

Sylvie looked up at Kim and gave her a smile"Ok Kim, the next contraction we need to deliver the shoulders okay, so push as hard as you can, Ok?"

The next contraction came, not leaving Kim much time to recover and she did as she was told, pushing as hard as she could.

"That's really good Kim, the first shoulder is out" Sylvie encouraged

Adam could now hear a siren approaching and he felt relief wash over him as he knew help was on the way.

"That's great, Kim. It's almost over. Just one more push"

Kim nodded and pushed again, and she only stopped when she felt the baby slip from her body.

"It's a girl" Sylvie announced "And she looks perfect"

Before Kim knew it the paramedics had her and baby Abigail loaded up and in the ambulance

"She's so beautiful," Kim said sniffling as she cradled the back of Abby's little head.

Kissing Kim's head, Adam looked back down at his little girl, "She sure is."

"She's bigger than Jackson was," Kim said softly, brushing her fingers against the baby's head.

"I think so too," Adam agreed, offering his finger to his little girl. "Five on this hand," he said smiling, reaching for her other little hand to count the fingers there as well.

"Look at that, an almost true knot in the umbilical cord…she must have been a busy baby in there, getting turned around so she could see something other than the ground when she came out to see you guys," Jimmy Borrelli said, smiling softly.

"Isn't that dangerous?"

"Not in her case, she's perfectly fine," he assured solidly.

Waiting until after the umbilical cord stopped pulsing, Borrelli clamped it off and handed the scissors over to Adam. Cutting it, Adam smiled at Kim once again.

"Let me get this little girl cleaned up, weighed and checked over and you can try to feed her.

"Okay," Kim said softly, reluctantly giving her up to him in the ambulance

Seeing them move around her, Adam sat down next to Kim.

"Is she ok?" Kim asked as the ambulance started down the road

"Her feet and fingers are a little blue, it'll go away in no time."

"Good to hear."

"How much do you think she weighs?" She asked Adam, moving to try to look at the little girl as she squirmed and cried in Jimmy's arms.

"I have no idea, looked like about fifteen pounds," he teased, brushing his hand against her forehead.

"Nine pounds, two ounces," Jimmy corrected, smiling at them.

"What a big little girl," Kim said, reaching up to wipe the tears out of her eyes.

"Nineteen inches," He added, putting the antibiotic in the little girl's eyes and slid a cap onto her head.

"Can I have her back now?" Kim asked, growing impatient.

"Of course you can," Jimmy said moving the wrapped baby back over to Kim's arms.

"Look at her," Adam said laying his head against Kim's.

"I see her."

"She sees you too," he said softly as the little girl opened her eyes slowly and attempted to focus in on Kim as her crying dissolved into hushed whimpers.

Cradling her, Kim finally moved to let her breastfeed if she was ready too.

"Don't worry about it, she's a big girl and has lots of energy to burn off before she might take interest in eating," Jimmy said gently, smiling at Kim.

Kim looked down at her daughter and smiled "Welcome to the world Abigail Faith Ruzek"

Smiling, she turned to catch her husband's eyes. "You think she likes her name?"

"Our little beloved second-born." Adam added as he looked at his wife and daughter.

"What are you all smiley about?" Kim asked, taking in the look on her husband's face.

"Nothing."

"Nothing, huh?"

"Everything. You, my kids, my life…I love it all."

"C'mere," she said reaching her hand out for Adam.

"What?" He asked taking her hand.

"We love you too." Kim added.

"You do, eh?"

"We do," she insisted, laying her head against him as he held their daughter in his arms.

Smiling once again, he turned to look at his wife, and then at his daughter. Happy and in love with everything in his life more than he could possibly imagine, he took a deep breath and soaked it all in.

Not exactly sure if life could ever get any better than it was at that moment, he did know that if it could, he would certainly look forward to that day wholeheartedly.

But for now…everything was perfect and that was more than enough.

Two Weeks Later

Jay opened the door the apartment and stepped inside. He yawned and loosened the tie to his uniform before slipping his uniform blazer off and hanging it over the arm of the couch. Jay had taken the CID up on their offer and had made it to Virginia a week ago. He'd set up housing in a two bedroom apartment. Each apartment shared a common living area and bathroom, a small kitchenette, and a balcony that overlooked downtown Alexandria. Jay was rooming with another guy from Texas named Scott that had also been pulled to join the CID.

Jay and Scott had really hit it off in the week since they met and Jay saw a lot of himself in Scott. The only difference was Scott was single without children and liked to use his free time to go out to bars and have a few drinks and talk to some of the girls in town.

That wasn't Jay's scene. He was happy just staying at the apartment and talking to Erin and the kids.

It was the end of their first week in Virginia but to Jay it seemed like a month. He was missing his family terribly. He had called Erin when he arrived to let her know he had arrived safe and sound and he could hear the relief and the happiness in her voice. It had taken all of his strength not to break down and get on the next plane back to Chicago.

They had talked for a few minutes and agreed that he'd call her every Sunday night at six o'clock her time. However, he had called her twice this first week alone because he missed her so much.

Jay tossed his keys on the table next to the sofa and sat down tiredly, kicking her dress shoes off. He was so exhausted this week.

He figured it was the long hours at work and the hour time change and his body getting used to it but it seemed like he couldn't get enough sleep.

He had been sure that he wouldn't be able to sleep without Erin. But after an almost sleepless first night he found she was able to sleep but when he did it was fitful. He would wake and reach for her and she wouldn't be there. Then he would get this tightening in his chest that made it hard to breath, knowing that she was a few states away and not anywhere within reach.

But they had made it through one week. Now there was only five more weeks and she and the kids would be here and just the thought of it made Jay smile.

He glanced over at the clock on the wall before he leaned his head back and closed his eyes. Erin should be calling in a little over an hour. Jay lifted his feet onto the couch and leaned back against the arm, figuring he could get in a short nap before she called.

Just as Jay was drifting off, the door to the suite opened and Scott and their friend Jason walked in. Amy was also in the CID and she and Scott had been friends since they were children. Scott's father was in the military and was stationed in France from the time Scott was five until he was fifteen.

Amy lived across the hall and had become fast friends with the two men. She was outrageous and outspoken. She was warm and caring and funny but she was forward, brazen, a little arrogant at times and she loved sex. She made it her mission to get laid as often as possible and Jay and Scott were amazed that she fulfilled her mission almost every night.

She had instantly fallen in love with both Jay and Scott, grateful to find such good friends in such a short time, especially being so far from home.

"Awww, isn't that cute. he's napping again." Amy teased as she lifted Jay's feet and sat on the couch, letting her feet to rest on his lap.

"Amy, don't make me hit a woman," Jay said without opening his eyes as he pushed her feet off of his lap. "I don't have the energy today."

Scott sat on the chair opposite the couch and giggled. "She's in rare form today, Jay, so watch out."

"Yes, I am." Amy grinned and curled her feet under her as Jay opened one eye to glare at her. "And you are coming out with us tonight Erin, and I won't take no for an answer."

Jay, resigned to the fact that he wasn't going to get any kind of sleep, sat up and pulled his feet back and off of the couch.

"And where are we going?" Jay asked through a yawn.

"It is a surprise my lovely friend, Jay. Just dress really sexy." She wriggled his eyebrows and Jay laughed at her.

"Amy, are you forgetting I'm a married man?"

"No, my sweet. You would never let me forget that. But that doesn't mean you can't go out and have a good time. Nor does it mean that you can't mercilessly tease the women who are going to ogle you regardless of what you wear."

Scott laughed and shook her head. "Amy, do you think of anything else besides sex twenty four hours a day?"

"You mean there's something else to think about?" She pretended to look surprised as Jay rolled his eyes.

"That hurts me, Jay?" Amy said as she held her chest.

"You're too much, Amy." Jay said getting up off of the couch.

"You're just pissed that I'm going to get laid tonight and you aren't, although I can tell you at least five girls in my class alone who would be more than happy to oblige you."

Jay sighed and looked at Amy. "I'm not interested"

"He said he wasn't interested" Scott said throwing a pillow in Amy's direction.

"I'm just trying to get the guy to lighten up" Amy teased.

"Amy, leave the poor guy alone. Can't you see he's sexually frustrated." Scott laughed as he stood and walked over to the balcony door and opened it, letting the warm afternoon breeze waft in.

Amy leered at Jay. "Well I can certainly help you out with that. Come on, Jay. Why don't you come over here and sit on my lap?"

"Amy, you wouldn't know how to get a guy off if you had an instruction manual." Scott chuckled as he walked back over to the couch and sat down next to him.

"Well, on that note, I'm going to take a shower before Erin calls. What time are we leaving for this group sex fest?" Jay asked, knowing they were not going to let him out of it this time.

Amy picked up the picture of Erin that was sitting on the end table and she examined it for a few seconds. "Eight o'clock sharp, so if you plan to have phone sex with your beautiful wife, you better make it snappy tonight. I won't be kept waiting."

Jay once again rolled his eyes at Amy and at the sound of Scott laughing as he shut his bedroom door behind him..

Amy sat with his feet up on the coffee table as Scott read a magazine.

"So, do you think he'll actually come out with us tonight?" She asked as she flipped through the photo album that Jay had on the coffee table.

"Sure, why not?" Scott answered absently as he flipped the page.

"Because we tried to get him to come out all week and he declined."

"He's missing his family, Amy. Will you leave just leave him alone? If he wants to come, he will, otherwise don't harass him." he reached out and grabbed her elbow and pinched.

"Ow!" She yelped softly. "What is with you two today?"

The ring of the telephone halted their conversation as Amy reached over and picked up the phone.

"Hello sexy, Jay and Scott's house of sin. How can I help you?" Amy said into the phone as Scott hit her on the shoulder.

"Um," Erin said, a little startled on the other end of the phone, "Is Jay there?"

"Yeah, he's in the shower. Who's calling please?" Amy asked, figuring it was Jay's wife.

"This is Erin." Erin said in a low voice. Who the hell was this bitch answering Jay's phone?

"Ahhh, the wife. Hold on one second."

Amy knocked on the bathroom door.

"Jay?" he called through the door.

It flew open and a very unhappy Jay Halstead glared back at her.

"Amy, I have warned you to stop trying to catch me naked. Now get out of my way."

He pushed past her, not noticing the phone in her hands.

Amy laughed out loud and grabbed her around the arm and she smiled softly.

"You might want to take this call." She whispered against as she handed him the phone.

Jay glared after him and then his eyes softened he pulled the phone up to his ear.

"Erin," he said softly into the phone. "Baby, is that you?"

The line went dead in her ear.

"Erin?" Jay said again as a dial tone blared in her ear. He clicked the phone off and looked at it worriedly as he walked into his bedroom and shut the door. The phone rang in his hand and he quickly answered it.

"Erin?"

"I'm sorry, Jay. Kane laid on the phone and disconnected me." Erin said softly and Jay let her warm voice surround him as she giggled.

"That's okay." He sighed as he sat on the edge of the bed.

The sound of her voice had made his heart rate increase but her soft, sexy giggle made him instantly hard. Jay groaned softly as he laid back on the bed.

Erin heard his soft groan and she laid back, the towel wrapped tightly around her body from her own bath loosening slightly at her movement. She was afraid to break the silence. Just the sound of his breathing on the other line instantly calmed her.

"I miss you Jay." Erin words were soft and sincere and Erin felt tears sting her eyes.

"I miss you too Er. How was the rest of your week?" Jay asked, needing to hear her voice again.

Kane jumped up onto the bed again and Erin shooed him off, knowing that Jay would know he was on the bed. He wasn't sure how he would know but he just would.

"It was okay. The twins got their shots yesterday, so they were pretty unhappy last night and Everly learned a new word from Atwater which made for an interesting conversation with Miss Lauren at Day Care when I picked your daughter up."

"I'm afraid to even ask" Jay said.

"She and I had a long talk at bathtime about words that little girls shouldn't use and how the next time they use it they will get a whipping" Erin explained.

"How is work?" Jay asked.

"It's lonely without you. But Hank is keeping us busy" Erin explained. "How is everything there?"

Jay sighed and rubbed his eyes. "It's good"

"That's good." Erin replied as she moved up the bed so she could rest her head on her pillow. The towel she was wearing loosened with her movements but she didn't bother to fix it. "How was your day?"

Jay reached down and brushed his fingers over his achingly hard cock. The soft rasp of her voice was driving him mad and he wanted nothing more than for her to be there with him so he could show her how much he loved her.

"It was good I'll tell you what, baby. The world moves at a slower place here. There is one problem"

"What's that?" Erin asked curiously as she rested her hand softly on her stomach.

"You're not here." Jay said as he absently fiddled with the waistband with the knot on the towel at his waist. The terrycloth getting heavy against his arousal.

"It won't be too much longer" Erin said simply. Her heart ached at how much she missed her husband, but she was so proud that he was following one of his dreams.

Jay sighed softly. "I know Er. I just miss you"

"Well, stop." She teased playfully and Jay sighed. "So, enough about what's going on here. Tell me about your classes. And more importantly, who was the gir answering your phone and trying to see you naked."

Jay could hear the slight jealousy that she was fighting to conceal in her voice. Hhe smiled softly as he wished desperately that she was there in his arms with him.

"The classes are phenomenal. I'm learning so much and it's only been a week. It's so different from anything I've done in IU. I really do like it"

Erin smiled at the excitement in her husband's voice. As desperately as she missed him, she knew it was worth it to hear the pure joy in his voice at finally fulfilling his dream.

"I'm so glad Jay. All I want is for you to be happy. I forgot to mention. I got this embarrassingly big vase of flowers at the district today. A rush delivery from Virginia. I can't imagine who'd send them" Erin said with a smile.

"So a husband can't send flowers to his wife?" Jay asked.

"You are much to good to me you know that?" Erin's voice caressed his ear and Jay felt himself harden even more.

"It's the other way around, love." Jay assured her.

A loud banging on Jay's door caused him to jump and gasp softly and his once throbbing erection deflated like a balloon.

"Jay, I'll be back in an hour to get you." Amy's voice came resounding through the door. "We're going to paint the town red tonight."

Jay huffed out an exasperated breath. Amy, as much as he liked the girl as a friend, she was going to be the death of her if he didn't kill her first. In the short week he had known her, he had figured that out instantly.

Erin was silent on the other end of the phone. "So, I guess that sets up my next question nicely. Who is that Jay?"

Jay could hear the tension in her voice. "That pain in the ass is Amy. I told you about her. She lives across the hall and she and Scott have known each other since they were children. You remember me telling you about her, don't you?"

"Yeah, I do. But you didn't tell me that she was trying to get you naked or that she was taking you out to paint the town red, was it?"

"Erin, don't be like this. I said she was trying to see me naked, not get me naked." Jay half laughed again, knowing that his soft chuckle would melt her. It always did.

"She's a handful, but she's a very sweet girl. I think you'd like her, once you got used to her obnoxiousness. And as for the painting the town red thing, we're all going out tonight. She and Scott have been trying to get me to go out all week but I've just been so tired."

"I'm sorry, baby. How are you feeling now?" Erin asked concerned.

"I'm not sleeping well. I feel like I sleep all the time but I'm still tired. But it's getting better. Don't worry about me Er. I'm fine I promise. But I am going to go out with them tonight. Just to get them off my back."

Jay chuckled and Erin joined him.

"So, Scott is going with you?" Erin asked casually, hoping she was subtle. Jay saw right through her.

"Yes, Erin he is. Now you can stop being jealous. You have no reason to be jealous of Amy. Never in a million years would you ever have to be jealous of her."

Jay chuckled again and knew he should clarify his statement to her but he decided to let her stew with that for a while.

There was silence on the phone for a moment and they both sighed at the same time.

"I love you Erin."

"I love you too Jay. So much. And I miss you so much it hurts."

"I miss you too, sweetheart. I wish you were here already. It's only been a week and I am so sexually frustrated I can't stand myself. Even Scott and Amy are teasing me about it."

Erin laughed at her admission. "I know the feeling Jay. The second I heard your voice and your sexy little giggle I was instantly turned on. And it hasn't subsided at all. I was thinking about that night in the cage all the time"

Jay groaned into the phone as visions of him pinning Erin against the brick wall in the cage as he roughly thrust in and out of her filled his mind. "I'll never forget that"

Erin's breath hitched at his words and she felt warm liquid pool between her thighs.

"Jay, you know there are things we can do even though we're in separate states."

"Erin Kathleen Halstead, are you suggesting what I think you're suggesting?" Jay asked.

Erin giggled at his question. She had heard the rustling of his towel in the background and knew he was stripping. She quickly loosened her own towel again as she moved lower on the bed, getting comfortable.

"You know Jay. We are married. We are allowed to do this."

"And what exactly are we doing Er?" Jay fought the urge to reach down and take his aching cock in his hand but he wanted to wait for her.

"Have you ever had phone sex Jay?" Erin asked, her voice breathy and deep.

"Baby," Jay replied softly into her ear. "You would be the first one to know if I had."

"Well then, why don't we give it a try?"
