Chapter 7

- Hey im Davies, I hope you don't mind but I need to know if you are bitten so if you could slowly turn around with your arms spread I would be very thankful.

The woman on the other side seemed unresponsive. She was still staring at the cabinet like she could see the door behind it and the infected who are currently slamming the door trying to get inside the buffet.

After a few second her head jerked towards Davies and she seemed surprised that someone else is also inside the room. The moment she seen Davies she took a step backward pressing her back to the window's.

She looked him up and down while Davies pulled down his face mask and smiled at her with the most welcoming smile he could squeeze out at the moment.

"Well she is certainly nice looking but maybe also kind of slow in the head. And why does she look at me like I'm some kind of alien from a far away galaxy? This woman never seen a man pretending to be a spearman inside his own room?"

- Helo. My name is Susanne, you can call me Suzi. Thank you for letting me in. I tried on every door on my way up but nobody opened it. I came from the second floor, my friend lives there... lived there.

Whe she mentioned her friend there was a slight pause and she trembled a bit.

- I understand can you show me your arms? Sorry about this but I need to be sure.

Davies felt a bit awkward after he heard about her friend, he could interpret that her friend did not make it, and most likely he or she did not have a nice ending.

Susanne lifted up her arms and turned them around so he could see them. After that she looked around the place and went back on defensive hugging herself.

-You live alone here? Davies right? No girlfriend or wife? This place is safe? I mean did you have any problem last night with your neighbours?

Susanne started to rapidly shoot off questions like a machine while her eyes got fixated on the hole inside the wall.

-Yeah I'm Davies. Well you could say I had a fairly peaceful night. Only my neighbour tried to break trough the walls between our apartments. But he's an old bloke so I think we don't need to worry too much about him. What happened to you guys? Why were you out in the corridors?

Skipping over his single status and trying to calm her down about the wall problem he suspected that the banging yesterday night from downstairs came from her apartment.

" Maybe her neighbour was not as weak as an old man."

- Me and my friend tried to camp out this madness at her place, but yesterday there was a loud noise than after that our neighbour tried to break down the walls. Now that I think about it, it was always my friend Annas problem that her walls are too thin and she could hear all kinds of noises from the other side. After half an hour of banging four guy climbed out from the wall and rushed my friend who could not hide in time. When they got in I hid inside one of the cabinets and stayed there till today morning when I made a run for it.

She started to wipe away the tears from her eyes smearing her black smink even more over her face while talking about her friend's demise.

" So it seems like if they did not find her than they don't have animalistic smelling. Even I could smell her perfume from the other side of the room. Well it's not like a certain evil corporation released a single letter named virus that spreads airborne right? This is reality so how could a virus mutate sensory glands in a single day? Seems like this girl have witnessed her friends death. No wonder she looks like an alleyway hooker after a long day of work. At least she smells nice. "

- Would you like to eat or drink something? You can tell me about the rest after you put something inside your stomach. Ahh you don't have to worry about the wall banging. My walls and doors are sturdier than most. The previous tenant was the owners son, and he played in a band. The walls got reinforced after the tenants cryed about the noises. I bought this place last year, even tough the sound proofing was removed the wall reinforcing stayed the same.

While talking to her so she don't feel like he poses any danger to her, Davies started to take out some food from the fridge.

- Yes some food would be really good. I'm sorry for the trouble even tough you already saved me a moment ago now I'm also eating up your food.

She seemed awkward and uneasy but she stared at the food like some hungry wolf. After she got stuck inside her friends cabinet for the whole night her stomach was already trying to digest itself.

- Don't mention it. I like company even before this shit storm hit us like fly swatter a fly. And now it's kind of a miracle, someone knocked on my door in the middle of the apocalypse.

"Well I do feal a slight heartache for it but if I already let you inside than at least I need to feed you."

- I can only offer some perishables from the fridge, no idea till when we have electricity. Seems like the army is doomed same for the police. So this whole mess going to be a long-drawn-out do what you can self-reliant battle.

After making her a sandwich and filling up a cup of water he placed them on the living room table for her. Than walked back to the entrance door to check up on the three infected who tried to break in. It's been a few minutes since they stopped banging on the door so he pushed away the kitchen cabinet and looked through the peephole. He could see them standing shoulder to shoulder staring at the door from half a meter distance.

After he pushed back the cabinet he checked on the old man next to see what he's up to. Looking through the hole he could see him with bleeding fingers holding a crowbar in hand and staring right back at him. Flinching away from the wall for a second he hurriedly went back to check him out better.

He's eyes were bloodshot dried blood under his nose and around his mouth. His once green checkered shirt was now dirtied with blood.

"He's definitely infected so how can he use a crowbar? I thought they act only on instinct and they don't have any resemblance of inteligence... could this be only a coincidence? Of course he had some kind of tool, otherwise how could the old fart demolish that thick wall in a single night?"

-Do you know the tenants in the building? Did you know Anna?

While Susanne started to wolf down her food she was following with her eye every move Davies made. Trying to get to know him a bit better she did a little probe who knows maybe they already know each other from somewhere.

-Nah not many. A few tennant I know from name but they are rare. My ex girlfriend knew the locals better. She lived here for a long time before we got together. I only moved here last year. And what about you? Did you live here or only passed by?

Davies started to get himself busy again with the stocking and took out some deer meat from the freezer to thwart it.

- By the way do you like wild game meat? I think we could cook up some venison with roasted carrots and honey-herb sauce.

Taking out the carrots from the fridge and after roughly checking the amount he decided it should be enough for 2 person and there would be also leftowers.

"Even if I use up all the vegetables this week, there is a vegetable shop with a greenhouse behind it on the other side of my building. I could climb the fence after the infected got lured away and pluck fresh ones. And it's better we eat them before they start to loose nutrition. Now I only need to wait till some poor bloke make some noise and triggers the infected. "
