She looked past the side of my head at something in my back. I turned to follow her line of sight but I was faced with nothing tangible that I can say has gotten her attention. I feel so sad that she space out but was never really willing to talk to me about it.
"Are you okay?" I asked as I reached out to grab her.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm fine." She responded as she signaled the waiter over.
"It doesn't seem like so to me." I tried to push some more buttons hoping she'll agree to talk.
"Don't push it." She deadpanned in an annoyed voice. It broke me. I rarely was at the receiving end of such harsh tones but I guessed I over-crossed the boundaries today.
"I'm sorry." I raised my hands up in a show of surrender.
"Are we returning home?" I asked Val after she settled our bill.
"Nope." She said popping the p in the nope. I grabbed Jackie by her hand and we walked side by side to the car.
