Cathy, after removing the letter addressed to her, put the rest of the 18 letters for Zhan back in the envelope along with the card. She then packed the rest of Xiao's stuff which included some pictures, some old dresses, and the jewelry she was wearing consisting of one wedding ring, some other light rings, and one gold chain with a pendant. She brought all these very carefully along with her necessary things and put them together. She didn't have anything to begin with, so it took her just 2 hours to pack her stuff. All she needed to do now was to wait for the confirmation from Hospital Administration about her flat and she can move right away.
After a few hours, when Cathy was playing with Zhan, she received a call from the hospital administrator that her flat was ready and she can move anytime. Cathy felt relieved after hearing that and informed them that she will be moving in half-hour as she doesn't have much luggage with her so they can leave the key with the security at the entrance of the colony. She quickly brought all the luggage to the door of the house and called the taxi. When the taxi arrived, with the help of the driver, she put all the luggage in the car, picked up Zhan, and left for her new residence. She didn't want to inform anyone in the neighborhood that she was leaving as that might lead to them asking more questions and she might put Zhan in danger.
After 15 minutes of drive, the taxi reached the First People's hospital employee colony's door. The Security stopped the taxi and asked where they were heading to. Since Cathy had already been informed by the management, she quickly took out her Employee I.D and showed it to security. When the security officer confirmed her identity, he immediately bowed to her and ran to get the keys to her apartment. He let Cathy sign the handover document and showed her the way to her new place. The taxi drove into the colony and stopped at the last building. The building looked relatively new and had a total of 6 floors with 2 apartments on each floor. Since Cathy had been promoted to the Head nurse meaning she was a middle management cadre, her apartment was on the 2nd floor.
With the help of the driver, Cathy transferred all her luggage into the apartment, paid him, and then closed the door. Zhan peacefully slept during their drive from Shanty Town to here, so Cathy left him on the couch and went to check the apartment. It was a two-bedroom apartment with a balcony with a total size of 800 sq ft. There was a huge seating area, both the rooms had attached washrooms and there was half washroom in the seating area. The kitchen was of good size as well and the best part was that the whole apartment came furnished so Cathy didn't need to spend any money on appliances or furniture. She was anyways living alone and didn't need anything in particular.
Taking advantage of Zhan's sleep, Cathy quickly opened the luggage and transferred all the things to their designated locations. She put all her and Zhan's clothes in her room along with all of Zhan's toys. For Xiao's old stuff except for letters and jewelry, she put them all in behind the unrequired stuff above the cupboard. The reason to do so was that she didn't want Zhan to find out about these things and ask questions till she was not ready to inform him about it. For the jewelry and letters, Cathy decided to put them all in a bank safe as her wedding ring looked very expensive and the same as Xiao's old stuff, she didn't want Zhan to ever stumble upon them unknowingly.
While she was setting up the apartment, she heard the doorbell. The sudden doorbell made her scared but when she heard the bell the second and third time, she quietly went to the door and looked through the peephole only to find that it was another nurse, Debbie, who worked with her at the hospital. Cathy quickly opened the door and welcome Debbie in.
Debby, "Welcome to the colony, Cathy. I heard from the management that you will be shifting today in this apartment so I thought I would bring you some housewarming gifts. I know you must be tired so I cooked these dishes for you to take which can supplement your energy".
Cathy, "Debbie, thank you so much but you didn't have to work so much. Your coming alone is enough for me."
Debbie, "C'mon, we are both colleagues and you have taken over for me so many times. This is nothing against how you always help me."
Cathy, "Thank you so much, Debbie, come in, take a seat".
Debbie walked in looking at the apartment and suddenly her sight falls on Zhan which made her shocked. She has known Cathy for quite some time now and never knew that Cathy had a child. She suddenly turned and looked at Cathy with questioning eyes. Cathy understood and went to pick up Zhan carefully, who was still sleeping peacefully. With the love in her eyes, Cathy looked at Zhan and said to Debbie, "Debbie, here meet my son, Zhan."
Debbie, who was already in shock, was flabbergasted when she heard that it was Cathy's son. She came close to them and took a peak at Zhan and then looked at Cathy. She still couldn't digest the fact that she never knew that Cathy had a son, and looking at the age of the child, he must be one year old. When did Cathy give birth? She never took maternity leave nor Debbie, who meets her every day at the hospital, saw her being pregnant. Then, where did this child come from? Looking at the poker-faced Debbie, Cathy knew the questions running in her mind. She instructed Debbie to seat with her eyes and took Zhan inside the room so as not to disturb his sleep. She then went to the kitchen and prepared tea for both of them. She handed the cup of tea to Debbie and sat down beside her.
Cathy, "I know you have a lot of questions running in your mind. I will answer all your questions. Zhan is not my son. He is the child of my sister, who recently died due to cancer and left Zhan in my care. Since I always had the wish to have children but never could, God fulfilled my wish in this way. He is the reason that I finally thought of shifting here so I can provide for him the best environment and be close to home when I am at work so I can come back in case of any emergency."
When Debbie heard this, she finally understood everything and calmed down.
