Chapter 75: Simmer Down

Tara’s POV

“You wanted to see me?” I called in as soon as I stepped through the threshold of Emerald’s room. It was easy enough to find the woman once I had gotten word she wanted to see me, there was little place else she often held herself up in these days. If it wasn’t the gardens, then she was here, in front of the open window of her bedroom lounging on the couch.

But Emerald’s situation wasn’t just… lounging. It wasn’t like she had been doing nothing the past few weeks while everything else had been going on. No, Emerald was here held up in her room so far away from the view of the public because of one reason.

She was dying.

“Come sit with me, dear,” her voice sounded weaker than it had the last time I had heard it. Her strong legs she had once used to run through forests and across plains were tucked beneath her, shielding themselves from even the harsh gaze of the sun.
