Chapter 18: Hot on the Trail

When he and his men reached the country home of the veterinarian, Lieutenant Herman Schmidt wasn’t surprised to see that no one was home. The monks had resisted talking long enough that one of their own could get word ahead that the shiny black boots were on their way.

As for the veterinarian himself, Schmidt chuckled just thinking of the pathetic little man. He’d thought he could escape capture by hiding in a nearby pond. It was actually a clever plan except for one noticeable flaw. In scuba diving gear he had waded down into the water apparently in hopes of waiting out the Germans he knew were coming.

He just forgot that constant air bubbles would rise to the surface. He also hadn’t gone very far out so one of Schmidt’s men were easily able to wade out and drag him to the shore.
