Hey guys, I just want to say thank you so much for your incredible support and reviews. I really appreciate it. I have to be honest, there is only a few chapters left of this fic and I am beginning to struggle as I am not very good at writing the case/investigation element of things. I'm also sorry I used the term 'CCTV', it is what we call security cameras in Ireland.
Also, a few people have asked me where I got the idea for this fic as it may be similar to something that may happen in this week's episode (*possible spoiler - I still don't believe Jay and Erin's undercover op will involve a sex club*) - but if it does, my fan fic is purely coincidental as I started writing it during the summer.
I hope you enjoy and please, read and review! I need all the help I can get to get this case closed!
Chapter 36
It was just after 4am in the morning, Erin and Jay walked along the cold Chicago streets; towards the 24 hour diner where they had agreed to meet Olinski for an update on the case. Erin hair was still pinned up; she had now removed her makeup. She was wearing jeans, a white t-shirt and Jay's black hoodie. Jay was wearing jeans, a red t-shirt and his black leather jacket.
As they stepped into the diner, they spotted Olinski sitting in a booth in the corner. They made their way towards him. He slid out of the booth to greet them; giving Jay a quick handshake followed by a slap on the back. He engulfed Erin in a fatherly hug. "You're looking good kid." He joked to Erin. "It'll make reporting back to Voight a lot easier."
"How's he been?" Erin asked as Olinski released her from his hold.
"Oh you know, missing you but he won't admit it." Olinski replied as they slipped back into the booth. "I think he even misses Halstead here...he's no one's balls to bust."
"Dang, I thought Ruzek would be his first choice!" Jay muttered sarcastically, causing Olinski to smile.
"I see you're doing your bit in the manor anyway." Olinski stated, eyeballing the purple blob on Jay's neck. Erin followed his gaze; her eyes widening at the sight of her love bite. She silently prayed she wasn't blushing but Jay took the comment in his stride and carried on.
"What about the victims?" Jay asked, bringing the conversation back to the case. "Did it happen last night when we were at the ball because a lot of the usual Manor members were at that ball..."
"No, it happened the night before." Olinski replied. "The victims were dumped early morning and just found before dinner last night. The male was dead but the female was still alive...barely breathing but still alive and hypothermic."
"Is she at Chicago med now?" Erin asked. Olinski nodded.
"And have we an I.D. for them?" Jay asked.
"The guy was Carl Peterson, an engineer for one of the big computer firms." Olinski replied, showing Erin and Jay a photo on his phone.
"Yeah, we could I.D. him our first night at the manor but we never had an opportunity to talk to him." Erin stated.
"And the girl is Isla Nixon, a call girl." Olinski replied, showing the photo. "We haven't been able to interview her yet."
"Sorry Al, she doesn't look familiar." Erin replied while Jay took the phone into his hands for a closer look. "What is it Jay?"
"I know her." Jay replied, handing the phone back to Olinski. "She approached me that night while I was at the bar with Poppy waiting on you to..." He trailed off, remembering Olinski was there. He didn't want to admit that he was waiting for Erin to give him a lap dance. That would definitely not go down well with Voight. "She approached me about a threesome...I didn't see Peterson but I guess he was her date." Jay lowered his head.
Erin placed her hand gently on his shoulder. "Jay, this wasn't your fault." She stated. "No one could have predicted this."
"Erin's right Jay." Olinski reassured him. "Did you see her talking to anyone else that night?"
"No, I was too busy with Poppy and then I went to another room." Jay replied, looking up. "If I had..."
"Jay don't!" Erin pleaded, locking eyes with Jay. She took his hand in hers; her thumb gently grazing it; a sign of intimacy that did not go unnoticed by Olinksi. "That night there were so many what ifs...don't even go there. We couldn't have predicted this."
Jay turned to Olinski. "When do you think you'll be able to interview her?" Jay asked, removing his hand from Erin's hold.
"The doctors are hopeful that we could talk to her after the morning rounds are completed." Olinski replied. "Obviously we'll keep you updated..."
"Do you think we could do the interview?" Jay asked.
"Jay..." Erin began while Olinski raised his eyebrows.
"I mean, I know it goes against protocol but she might not talk about the manor because it is a secret society..." Jay argued.
"A secret society that nearly got her killed." Erin reasoned. "Why would she keep their secret?"
"I know but..." Jay sighed.
"How could you do the interview without being compromised?" Olinski asked.
"We could say we're there for a check up." Jay stated. "I mean, a lot of the couples we interact with have questioned why we don't have kids..."
"If we're spotted, we could say we've decided to start trying." Erin stated, backing up Jay's story.
"Fine, I'll suggest it to Voight if Isla doesn't talk to us." Olinski said. "We'll be in touch." Olinski stood up. "Oh, and Kim is still chasing up this 'Amy Rollins'."
"Amy Rollins?" Jay asked.
"I'll fill you in later." Erin muttered. Jay nodded.
"Stay safe." Olinski said and disappeared.
Erin turned to Jay, her fingers gently grazing the blob on his neck. "One thing is for sure...if we're summoned to the hospital, you'll have to get that covered." Erin said, slightly blushing. "Or you'll be ending up in a hospital bed if Voight sees it."
Jay brushed her hand away. "It'll be fine...I'll get it covered." He stated coolly. "As far as Voight is concerned, I could have got this from Poppy at the manor."
"Yeah but...I can't believe I actually did that to you." Erin said. "I always thought that was the sign of a possessive girlfriend, needing to mark her man to warn all other women."
"Well maybe you are a little possessive." Jay joked, which made Erin slap his arm, smiling at him. His express grew soft but serious. "Look Erin, you have to know I don't regret anything about last night but..."
"I know Jay...the case is the priority now...this...us...it's professional." Erin stated. "But, just so you know...I don't regret last night either...maybe just that." Her eyes were on the purple blob on his neck.
Jay smiled. He stood up and slipped out of the booth. "C'mon, let's get back to the apartment and try to catch up on some sleep." He said. He held out his hand. Erin nodded and slipped her hand in his. "So who is this 'Amy Rollins'?"
"Well..." Erin said, starting to tell Jay about her run in with Ben as they exited the diner hand in hand.
Erin was lying on top of the sheets on the bed, staring at the ceiling; struggling to sleep. She glanced over at Jay, lying beside her; also above the sheets; curled onto his side; sound asleep. They were both fully clothed.
She sighed as her thoughts refused to shift; Jay wasn't the only one playing 'What if' about their last night in the manor. She couldn't help but think about what could have gone differently; if she had not given Jay a lap dance; if she had stopped when she should have, they wouldn't have left so abruptly; if they hadn't left, would they have noticed something going on? She liked to think that as detectives, they would have and if that was the case, was she actually to blame?
The gentle beeps of her cell phone broke her train of thought just in time. She reached over to the bed side table and grabbed her phone. Burgess had sent through an email about 'Amy Rollins'.
Erin sat up on the bed as she read the email. "Shit!" She muttered; her suspicions were correct. She glanced over at Jay; thankfully, she hadn't woken him. She climbed off the bed and walked out of the bedroom; grabbing her jacket and keys as she headed towards the apartment door.
Erin stepped out of the elevator and straight into the lobby; her eyes searching for Ben; she located him behind his desk. She strode over to him. "Hey Erin, how can I be of assistance?" He asked with a cheerful grin on his face.
Erin placed her hands on the desk and looked him right in the eyes. "I want the truth about my friend Amy Stimson...or should I say Amy Rollins?"
Ben hung his head. "Shit!" He muttered.
"I know they're the same person Ben." Erin stated. "I know that Amy was a street kid and she somehow managed to change her name and start a new life...one that lands her one of Chicago's most eligible bachelors. What I don't know is your connection to her but I need to know it."
Ben slowly raised his head to look Erin in the eyes. "Erin, I swear...I never was involved in anything illegal." Ben stated. "I really need this job."
"Ben, right now I'm not after your job...I'm trying to find out why my friend is lying about who she is." Erin stated.
"How did you find out?" Ben asked.
"You raised my suspicions and I did a little digging." Erin replied. "The internet is a great tool." She was maintaining her cover.
Ben sighed. "I knew I did the wrong thing as soon as I mentioned her but I hoped I covered it. Obviously not."
"Ben..." Erin pleaded.
"Amy and I kinda grew up together...we were in the care system together." Ben stated. "I only ever wanted a job that would give me enough money to be able to have a place of my own. Amy however...wanted it all and I always thought she was being unrealistic because of who we were."
"You mentioned that Amy was bad news..." Erin prompted softly.
"Not always...I mean yeah, we were both a little rough but..." Ben trailed off. "Because of her dreams, Amy was never happy with what she had...she always wanted more. She began chasing these trust fund guys and they used her...got her hooked on drugs...suddenly she started stealing, selling herself...anything to get her next hit."
Erin nodded; the story extremely familiar to her; she suddenly understood her connection to Amy. "I tried to help but...I got an opportunity to get out of the system with a reputable job as a host in a restaurant and I took it." Ben continued. "I don't know how she got her name changed or landed her fiancée. I still thought she was Amy Rollins until you called her Amy Stimson...I realised then that she was trying to have a new life, I didn't mean to blow it for her."
"Ben, we all make mistakes in our past." Erin said. "I just had to make sure Amy wasn't in trouble...that's why I had to question your history."
"My boss doesn't know my past." Ben stated. "I kinda lied a bit on my C.V., I only have my G.E.D. and some community college...not a degree. I worked really hard to get my education. If they were to find out..."
"Ben, I'm not going to tell." Erin reassured him. "Right now, you're doing your job, helping out a resident."
"Thank you." He replied.
Erin nodded and headed back towards the elevator; her mind was spinning; wondering if Amy's past did change anything. After all, Voight had given Erin a fresh start...did she really need to destroy Amy's? Had Amy really done anything wrong?
Erin's cell phone began to ring as she stepped into the elevator. She looked at the caller I.D.; it was Jay. She quickly answered it.
"Where are you?" She could hear the panic in Jay's voice. She knew she should have left him a note for when he woke up but she had completely forgotten.
"I was down in the lobby but I'm making my way up now." She replied. "Why?"
"Olinski is just off the phone." Jay stated. "Isla won't talk...she's insisting she was attacked on the street while on a job...she hasn't mentioned the manor. They want us at the hospital to see if we can get her to talk."
"Okay." Erin sighed, a sudden dread filling her as the elevator stopped at their floor. "Just give me 5 to change." She didn't know if she was ready to return to reality; the team and Voight. She wondered if he'd be able to tell things had changed between herself and Jay but she hoped for their sake, he couldn't.
To be continued...
