Chapter 38
Jay was sitting on the couch, nursing a bottle of beer; dressed in jeans, a light blue shirt and a navy blazer; his eyes following Erin as she paced up and down before him. She was wearing a red short sleeved drop waist dress that fell just about her knees; thick black tights and black 4 inch shoe boots. Her hair was hanging down naturally; her makeup was minimal and natural.
"Erin, you can pace all you want but it won't change anything." Jay stated, before taking another sip of his beer.
"I can't believe you're okay with this plan of action." She retorted, glancing over at him as she continued to pace; her hands on her hips.
They had returned from their debrief with the intelligence team a few hours ago and Erin had only stopped pacing to get changed. Voight had heard the information supplied from their interview with the victim and had decided there was no solid information to act on.
"Erin, we have nothing solid to act on." Jay replied. "We can keep closer surveillance on the bar tenders and wait until we have something concrete to act on."
"But what about Amy and Tony?" Erin questioned; she had finally stopped pacing and had turned to face Jay.
"Erin, we have no evidence on either of them...and honestly, Tony does not have the ability to set a trap for us." Jay replied. "I work for the guy...I should know."
"But Jay...we can't just do nothing." Erin sighed.
Jay sat down his bottle of beer and stood up; he walked towards Erin and delicately sat his hands on top of her shoulders; he looked her in the eyes. "Erin, we are not doing nothing." He reassured her. "We are going to the manor tonight and we will continue going to the manor until we catch this animal."
Erin nodded and sighed; she knew Jay was right but she couldn't help but feel that she should be doing more.
Erin and Jay were sitting at the bar in the manor; feeling it was the best place to get better acquainted with the bar tenders. They both had a glass of scotch in front of them; Erin's finger traced the rim of the glass as she scanned the room with her eyes; afraid to miss something.
Jay was sitting extremely close to her; his legs brushing hers; his arm wrapped around her; his face only a few centimetres from hers. To anyone watching; they looked like the perfect loved up couple; as Jay traced his fingers up Erin's arm and whispered in her ear.
"Erin, you need to relax." He whispered.
She looked up at him; ignoring the sensation his breath in her ear created. "I am relaxed." She replied, smiling sweetly at him. Jay scoffed as he could tell she was lying. Erin glanced over his shoulder; her eyes finding Poppy; staring over at them with intent. "You however, should be the nervous one."
"What do you mean?" Jay asked. Erin nodded over his shoulder; he glanced over quickly and groaned as he noticed Poppy. "Shit." He muttered as he looked back at Erin. "I am going to clean up the mess I created with her." He gently stroked Erin's cheek. "Promise me you will not do anything silly until I come back?"
"Jay, I'm not the one who hooked up with a bunny boiler." She teased.
"Stay here." He instructed, sliding off his bar stool.
"I'm not a dog." She muttered, watching as he walk over to Poppy and disappeared through one of the many doors. She returned her attention to the glass of scotch in front of her; her finger continuing to trace the rim of the glass.
"If he is going to be your baby daddy then he'll have to stop slumming it with Poppy Banks." Amy's familiar voice stated from behind Erin.
Erin jumped slightly; she was not sure how to respond to Amy anymore but she quickly recovered. "Amy, it's not what you think." She retorted. "He's ending it...he told me."
"Of course he is." Amy shot back sarcastically as she sat on the stool previously occupied by Jay. "Erin, you're too good for him."
"Amy..." Erin began.
"No, I am not going to let you defend him anymore." Amy stated. "I know you love him and you want a family with him but Erin, seriously, I think you need some fun before he gets you knocked up."
"So what are suggesting? I go have a threesome?" Erin threw the comment out as a joke, testing the water for her response. She knew Voight and Jay told her not to act on her suspicions but she couldn't ignore this chance.
"Would you seriously be interested in something like that?" Amy asked.
Erin paused; wondering if she should act on the opportunity. Even if she answered yes, it didn't mean it had to happen tonight; she was just laying the groundwork; or at least that's what she told herself. "Yeah...if it were with the right people." She replied. "Why? Do you know anyone?"
"Yeah, I think I do." Amy replied, a smile forming on her lips before giving a small laugh. Erin forced a small laugh too; her mind whirling at what she just got herself into.
Jay entered the bar again; rubbing his left cheek; a blazing red handprint clearly visible. Poppy had not responded well to the news that he would be ending their liaison. He was pretty sure that when he returned to the car, the wheels would be slashed or the paintwork would be scraped, or both. He couldn't think about that now though; his mind was focused on returning to Erin.
As he approached the bar he could see the two seats that they had once occupied were now empty. Panic filled his mind as he ran his fingers through his hair; scanning the room; searching for her but she was nowhere to be found. "Shit Erin!" He muttered. "What have you done?"
Erin stood in the room; scanning her surroundings; regretting taking the opportunity Amy had presented. She was in a plain white room with no windows and only one door; there was nothing else in the room except two white chairs. There was no exit strategy here; hopefully she wouldn't need one.
When Amy had suggested a threesome, she hadn't thought Amy meant right now. Now she was by herself and Jay had no idea where she was. As Amy had led her out of the bar, Erin had made a point of mentioning to Louisa that she was joining Amy for an activity. Her only hope now was that Jay would seek out Louisa.
She could hear Amy's hushed voice outside the door, along with a man's voice. She could hear Amy pleading to be part of the act; wanting to join in. Erin could tell the man was hesitant and seemed a little peeved that Amy had brought Erin alone without a partner. Again, she could hear Amy stressing that she wanted in on the 'fun'. From what Erin could hear, it sounded like Amy often found him partners for his 'fun'. However, Amy did not mention any names.
The hushed voices stopped; Erin swallowed hard; keeping her eyes on the door as the door slowly began to open. Amy waltzed into the room; full of smiles; followed by a man wearing one of the masks the bar tenders wore; however, he was not wearing the rest of their uniform.
Erin backed off slowly, towards the opposite wall, keeping a smile on her face as the man approached her. "Are you ready for a little fun Erin?" He asked.
Erin forced herself to nod and smile wider. There was something in his voice was familiar but she couldn't place it. "Of course." She replied; silently praying Jay was already searching for her.
Jay's eyes continued to scan the groups of people as he made his way through the open access rooms within the manor; pushing anyone that stood in his way. Erin was nowhere to be seen. His eyes fell on Louisa, who was mingling amongst the crowds. He strode towards her.
"Good evening Mr Kingston." She greeted him with a smile.
"Where is my wife?" He barked.
"Mrs Kingston joined Ms Stimson for an activity..." Louisa replied. "...while you were engaged with Mrs Banks."
"And where did they go for this activity?" He snapped, beginning to lose his patience.
"Mr Kingston, your wife did not request your company..." Louisa began to explain. Jay reached out and grabbed Louisa arm and dragged her towards a secluded corner. "Mr Kingston, you're hurting me!"
"Listen to me Louisa, I'm not Mr Kingston." Jay angrily whispered in her ear. "My name is Jay Halstead, I'm a Detective within the intelligence unit of District 21 and Mrs Kingston is actually my partner Detective Erin Lindsay."
"Mr..." Louisa began.
"Now, you need to tell me where Erin and Ms Stimson went or I will have your ass as an accomplice of 5 murders and 1 attempted murder." Jay hissed.
"Whoa! Murders?" Louisa exclaimed. "I...I..."
"The choice is yours Louisa." Jay hissed.
"They went to the clean room at the back of the manor." Louisa replied. "You take the third corridor and it's the last room on the left."
"Now I need you to phone the police and ask for the intelligence team." Jay said. "Tell them we have two detectives unarmed in a blind situation and direct them to the same room you just directed me."
"But..." Louisa began to argue.
"Do you want to be an accomplice to 6 murders?" Jay snapped.
Louisa shook her head and ran off towards the reception. Jay had to trust that she would do as he instructed; he didn't have time to double check; he had to get to Erin and hope he wasn't too late.
Erin was on her knees, stripped to her underwear; her hands tied behind her back; her eyes fixed on the man in the mask as he placed Amy into the same position as her.
"Oh, this is kinky!" Amy squealed as the man tied her arms. She had already stripped to her underwear "I've never done a threesome like this before. How exactly is this going to work?"
Erin inwardly groaned. Amy was giving blondes everywhere a bad name. Was she really so clueless or was this all part of her act?
"You'll soon see Amy, you'll soon see." The man in the mask sighed, stroking Amy's cheek.
Amy leaned into his touch and giggled while Erin silently wondered if Jay was ever going to come for her. She was seriously beginning to wish that she had listened to him and had stayed put in the bar. What if he was still with Poppy and had no idea that she had got herself into this mess?
Suddenly the door of the room burst open; all three pairs of eyes focused on the door as Jay rushed in; his eyes landing on Erin. "Erin..." He almost sighed with relief.
"Jay...watch!" Erin shouted, just as Jay turned and ducked, missing the masked man's fist. He wrapped his arms around the man's waist and pushed him against the wall.
"Oh, the jealous husband, is this all part of the act?" Amy asked as she watched Jay and the masked man wrestle.
Erin groaned at Amy's stupidity as she tried to free her hands; becoming desperate as she watched Jay take a few blows to his stomach; before manoeuvring the man over to get him into a headlock.
Suddenly, everything seemed to happen in slow motion as the masked man managed to get his hand in his pocket and pull out a syringe. "Jay..." Erin shouted, just as the man jammed the needle into Jay's leg. Jay slumped to the ground, releasing the man.
"Oh my God Joel! What the hell have you done?" Amy cried as Erin felt an extra surge of adrenalin to her body, hoping it would help her free her hands; she had to get to Jay. Suddenly Erin realised why the voice was familiar...it was Joel Dunn behind the mask.
"Don't say my name Amy!" Joel hissed, reaching out and striking Amy hard against the cheek; knocking her down to the floor.
Erin was finally able to free her hands from her restraints; she fought the urge to run and check on Jay; instead, she lifted one of the chairs and smashed it over Joel. He staggered briefly but turned to face her; reaching out and grabbing her neck, he pushed her towards the wall. "You stupid little bitch..." He began to rant just as Erin heard a familiar gravelly voice.
"Chicago P.D...Put your hands up!" Voight stated, storming into the room and sticking his gun into the small of Joel's back. Joel quickly released Erin and held up his hands.
The next few moments were a blur for Erin as she raced towards Jay and knelt beside him; thankfully he still had a pulse and was breathing. From the corner of her eye she could see Dawson scoop Amy off the floor as she sobbed uncontrollably while Atwater and Roman led Joel out of the room in handcuffs. She felt Burgess drape some sort of jacket over her but right now, she didn't care that the team were seeing her in her underwear. She was focused on Jay as she listened to Ruzek radio for an ambulance.
"Erin, it's okay...everything will be okay." Burgess tried to reassure her.
"He injected him with something Kim...I was too slow to warn him." Erin cried, tears rolling down her cheeks. "This is all my fault...he told me not to act but I didn't listen."
Olinski looked over at Voight as they both watched Erin cry over Jay's motionless body; they both shared a knowing look; everything had changed; things had gone too far; Voight's rules no longer applied; and Voight wasn't sure if there was anything he could do about it.
To be continued...
