12. CHAPTER 12

CHAPTER 12

It’s a calm night in Seattle when the Station 19 trucks speed down the highway destroying the calm. Station 19 with their sirens wailing and their lights flashing in the dark of night make their way to Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital.

“Let’s go!” Maya yells out in sheer panic to Miller in the driver’s seat. “Come on! We need to go faster!”

“We’re going Maya.” Miller reassures his friend calmly into his headset as he keeps his eyes on the road while pushing the horn to upcoming cars. “We’ll get there.”

Maya just shakes her head and goes to her radio. “Station 19 to Dispatch; are additional units on route to Grey-Sloan?”

“Affirmative 19, additional units on route.”

Andy turns around from the front seat and places her hand on her best friend’s shoulder. “Maya we’ll be there soon.”

“She’s not picking up or responding to my texts.” Maya says before biting her lip to keep the tears away.

“That doesn’t mean anything.” Andy says to Maya trying to remain positive. “She’s probably upstairs with a patient.”

Maya just rubs her hand over her face. “What did they say over the radio again?

“They said that a truck crashed through the ER.” Andy repeats calmly.

“I just got a text from Miranda…..she’ll meet us in the front.” Ben says as he continues to read the text he just received from his wife. The relief of knowing that his wife is okay can be heard in his voice. “She says the police on scene have everything roped off already.”

Maya closes her eyes for a second before another terrifying thought enters her mind. She reaches over and grabs Ben’s arm frantically. “Where’s the daycare again?”

Ben places his hand on top of Maya’s and looks her in the eyes. “It’s on the 2nd floor…complete opposite side of the hospital from the ER.”

“Good, good.” Maya mutters to herself as she tries to get her breathing under control. She knows the daycare is not located by the ER but she needed to hear it…at least one of her girls is alright.

“Maya, Carina will be fine.” Andy says.

Maya just shakes her head in disbelief. “She gets called to the ER all the time.”

“Chances are she was up in OB at the time of the crash.” Ben tells his friend. “Let’s stay positive.”

Andy nods her head. “It’ll be okay--.”

“MILLER?!” Maya yells wanting an update.

“We’re almost there!” Dean yells back as he takes a quick right turn before laying on the horn again.

It only takes another three minutes until they are speeding up to the front entrance of the hospital. Maya takes a breath and looks out the window and immediately sees the massive hole through the ER entrance door with glass shattered all around. When the truck stops, Maya all but flings herself off the truck and looks around at the scene. She looks around and sees running doctors and nurses trying to get to the wounded to help to triage. Maya looks for Carina….but doesn’t see her.

“Okay, let’s go, let’s go.” Maya says as the other firefighters jump out of the truck and start grabbing the tools they may need for search and rescue.

The firefighters run through the crowds of people and start to head to the building when Dr. Bailey waves them over to where she has been standing with the police.

“Captain!” Dr. Bailey yells out as she waves them over.

Maya sees Bailey and rushes over with her team behind her. “Bailey?! Where’s Carina?”

“I saw her upstairs right before the crash.” Dr. Bailey assures Maya who finally lets out a relieved breath. “She was headed to her office to finish some charts.”

“Thank god.” Maya says as she closes her eyes for a moment in relief. “What about Ginny?”

Dr. Bailey nods her head and places her hands on Maya’s arms. “The baby is still in the daycare, she’s totally safe.”

“Okay.” Maya says through another relieved breath before going into work mode. “What do we know?”

“A 26 foot moving truck crashed into the entrance of the ER.” Bailey starts to explain the situation. “It crashed right through the steel doors and smashed into the walls of the ER.”

“Jesus.” Vic mutters as she looks over to the building.

“We were concerned that there was a bomb inside the back…but when it crashed the doors flew open…just a sofa and a mattress.”

Maya nods her head relieved and points back to the hospital “Has the ER been evacuated?”

“Not all the way…no.” Bailey says with a stressed breath. “We’re working on it.”

“What about the gas?” Ben asks his wife. “Has it been shut off?”

Bailey nods her head to her husband. “Yes, we had maintenance shut off all oxygen and any other gases off in that wing of the hospital.”

“Good.” Maya says as she gets ready to give orders to her team. But before she can Nico Kim comes running over to his boss.

“Chief Bailey!” Nico yells out.

“Dr. Kim!” Bailey calls back to her doctor as he lands in front of her, breathing hard.

“I was inside the ER when the truck crashed.” Nico says as he tries to catch his breath. “I’ve been helping people get out.”

“You’re bleeding.” Bailey says as she looks at the open gash on his leg.

“I’m good.” Nico says as he lets out a strained breath. “We think we’re missing some people.”

“Do we know who?” Bailey asks the young doctor.

“I don’t know for sure.” Nico says as he runs his hand his hair. “Nobody has seen the new nurse Rachel, a uhh…Mr. West who came in with food poisoning, and Dr. DeLuca.”

Maya hears this and immediately grabs a startled Nico by the arm. “Did you just say Dr. DeLuca?!”

Bailey waves the worried wife down before staring back at Nico. “No…Carina was upstairs.”

“Dr. DeLuca got called down for a consult.” Nico says softly with a shake of his head. “She was inside the emergency room when the crash happened.”

Maya’s heart stops in her chest and everything moves in slow motion for a second. Her wife was there….her wife was there. Her wife is missing. “Oh my god.”

Andy reaches over and grabs her friend by the arms in attempt to steady the terrified woman.

“Gretchen and Katie were both working with DeLuca.” Nico goes on to explain the situation with the group. “Gretchen told police that Dr. DeLuca was behind them when the crash happened.”

“I’m going in!” Maya yells but is held back by Andy and Ben.

Battalion Chief Sullivan rushes over in time to see his captain being held back from going in the building. The first thing he notices is the look of absolute terror on Maya’s face. He looks around the scene and tries to figure out what is going on before looking to his wife.

“What’s going on?” Sullivan asks his wife.

Andy leaves Maya with Ben for a second and steps over to Sullivan’s ear. “Carina’s still inside.”

Maya simply stares at the building as the chaos around her continues to move in slow motion.

“Carina.” Maya says softly to herself as her mind starts to wander.

Maya and Carina are doing yoga in their living room. Carina convinced her wife of two months to de-stress by doing some simple exercises. They sit across from each other with their eyes closed and their crossed legs on the floor. Maya can’t help but pick up her phone by her to foot to look at her work emails out of boredom.

“Stop looking at your phone Maya.” Carina demands.

Maya slowly puts her phone down and squints her eyes at her wife. “How did you--”

“I can feel you moving.” Carina says as she raises an eye brow. “Now close your eyes and focus on your breathing.”

Maya rolls her eyes. “Honey, I know how to breathe.”

“Bambina.” Carina whines through her pursed lips. “You promised you would try.”

“I did…its cute.” Maya chirps quickly.

Carina finally opens her eyes and tilts her head at her wife. “Cute?”

“Let’s go for a run together…it’ll be fun.” Maya suggests as she leans over to place her hands on Carina’s thighs.

“Bambina….I went for a run with you the other day.” Carina grumbles.

Maya lets out a snort and shakes her head. “You ran for a mile and then stopped for an espresso.”

“So?” Carina drawls innocently.

“You then Ubered home!” Maya laughs.

Carina holds up her hands in defense. “I worked a 12 hour shift the day before…okay.”

“I always run after a long shift.” Maya says with a smirk.

“Yes Bambina…we’ve been through this…” Carina says before closing her eyes again. “Sei pazza.” (You are crazy.)

Maya takes the opportunity to lean closer to her mouth. “You love me.”

“I do…” Carina says before pushing her wife’s face back. “Now breathe.”

“Woooooooo.” Maya breathes out dramatically much to the annoyance of her wife.

Carina sighs and opens her eyes. “Are you aware that some first responders are using yoga and meditation as a tool to deal with on the job trauma?”

“I think I did get that email, yes.” Maya jokes sarcastically.

“Maya.” Carina admonishes before going back to her deep breathing exercises.

Maya watches her wife continue her breathing and zeroes in on her low cut tank top. “What I am aware of is that your breathing…is causing a great deal of stress in my body right now.”

“That is because the breathing exercise is charging your nervous system…creating a feeling of bliss.” Carina explains before taking another long breath.

Maya bites her bottom lip and again gets closer to her wife’s mouth. “I think we should treat our stress right now…”

“Maya…come on.” Carina laughs as she opens her eyes again.

“What?!” Maya chuckles before moving her mouth towards Carina’s ear. “We can still get a work out in and I promise to do that thing you like with my tongue.”

Carina suppresses a moan when she feels Maya biting at her ear. “You are not very nice…you know this.”

“It is not my fault that you drive me…pazza.” Maya whispers in her ear before moving to her lips once more.

“I do….huh.” Carina teases back before capturing her wife’s lips with her own. “Alright…”

“Yeah!” Maya cheers as she leans forward before tackling her wife to the ground. “No more yoga!”

Carina laughs as her wife kisses her neck. “Maya!”

Maya blinks away the memory and tries to focus. “Carina….she’s…”

“Maya.” Andy says softly to her friend but when her eyes continue to wander from side to side she gets in front of her face. “Maya! Carina will be okay.”

“We’re gonna get her out Maya.” Ben adds trying to comfort his friend.

Sullivan steps in front of Maya and waves his hand. “Bishop, I’m going to take over the scene…you and 19 will do search and rescue.”

“Thank you Chief.” Maya says with her eyes still on the hospital as Jack comes running over.

“Engine is ready.” Gibson tells his bosses as a Sergeant from the SPD comes running up to the group from behind to check with the fire evacuation plan.

“You the incident commander?” Sergeant Kross asks the fire chief.

“Yes.” Sullivan says before asking for the status of the scene. “Report?”

“A moving truck crashed through the entrance of the emergency room.” Sergeant Kross explains loudly over the new sirens arriving on scene. “The driver and passenger have been treated and taken into custody…..they were high as kites.”

“Damage?” Sullivan asks.

“The ceiling partially collapsed along with some of the beams….the walls have been compromised. We don’t know the damage to the second floor yet.” Officer Kross goes on to explain. “It's your call, Chief.

“Sir?!” Maya yells out with her eyes still on the hospital. “I’m going now! We need to go now!”

Sullivan nods to the officer before facing Maya and the rest of truck. “Grab the rest of 19 and head into the building. We don’t know how many injured and trapped we have in there.”

“Yes Chief.” Maya says through a short breath before looking towards Engine. “19! We’re going in!”

Hughes, Montgomery, and Willet all on Engine nod their heads and grab any tools they may need before heading towards the truck. Maya takes a steadying breath and reminds herself that she needs to stay focused…for her team…and her wife. She closes her eyes briefly and tries to ignore the blaring sirens and loud voices in the black of night as people do their best to help any wounded.

“Station 12 and Station 41 are now arriving on scene.” Sullivan says as he points to the speeding fire trucks arriving on scene. “I’m going to send them in to put portable beams up in the ER and check the status of the second floor.”

“Let’s go!” Maya yells as she rushes with Warren and Miller behind her.

“Bishop! Gibson!” Sullivan yells after them.

Gibson is the only one to turn around. “Chief?”

“Watch your step!” Sullivan informs his lieutenant. “When I say "get out," I mean it.”

“Got it.” Gibson says as he runs with Hughes, Montgomery and Willet behind him.

Dr. Bailey watches her husband and his team run towards the building before going back to her walkie talkie to check on triage. Robert Sullivan takes of his helmet to wave it over to the arriving trucks before looking to his now quiet wife standing next to him.

“Are you okay?” Sullivan asks gently.

Andy just shakes her head and wipes at her face. “I’m going to see if they need any help with triage.”

Sullivan shakes his head. “Stay here…please.”

“Why?” Andy snaps irritated over the simply request.

“Because this could be the worst day of Maya’s life….she’s going to need you.” Sullivan says solemnly.

Andy chokes back a small sob, but then nods her head and looks over at the hospital as Sullivan goes over to check in on the arriving stations.

Maya and 19 arrive at the entrance and look around at all the broken steel and glass on the ground. They look up and can see hanging light fixtures, wires, and parts of broken ceiling.

“Watch your heads.” Maya says back to her team.

“Got it.” Station 19 choruses as they carefully make their way into the ER.

They walk and see the massive truck covered in dust from the broken concrete through the darkness. When the truck most of the lights were damaged…leaving only brightness coming from the floodlights and their helmet lights. The team looks around at all the damage done to the ER. Most of the examination beds are now on the ground surrounded by personal items, dust, broken steal, broken concrete, and scattered hospital supplies. As they continue to walk in a group people makes their way towards them in a daze.

“Ma'am, ma'am, this way.” Dean tells one woman as he helps her over a toppled gurney before pointing to the exit.

“Carina!!” Maya calls out.

“Please, hey, do not run.” Warren tells a young nurse who is trying to get out. “Walk to the exit, please. It’s okay.”

The firefighters of 19 help out the last of the people inside the emergency room as Maya looks around for any sign of her wife.

“Ma'am, come on.” Travis says to another woman trying to find her way out. “Keep moving.”

Miller looks over and sees somebody struggling to get up by Hughes. “Vic.”

Vic looks to where Hughes is pointing and goes to help the man up off the ground. “Take it easy, easy. There you go.”

“I couldn’t get up.” The man stutters out in shock.

Vic looks at the man and drapes his arm over her shoulders. “I’m going to help you out Sir; you’re going to be okay.”

“Fire department! Call out!” Gibson calls out as he starts to pick up debris off the ground looking for people hurt or trapped.

“Help!” a voice calls out through the dust in the air. “I can’t see!”

Maya looks over to where the voice is coming from and sees a young orderly on the ground by the wall with blood and dust covering his eyes. She rushes over and kneels down to get a better look. “My name is Maya and I’m a fire fighter, you are going to be okay.”

“Uhh.” The orderly manages to stutter out.

Maya can see his panic getting worse. “What’s your name?”

“Tyrone.”

Maya nods her head and grabs a nearby rag before wiping away the muck on his face. Once it is mostly gone she tries to get him to look her in the eye. “Tyrone you are going to be okay.”

Tyrone starts to wave his head around and Maya grabs his hands to try to steady him. “What happened? Was there a bomb?”

“A truck crashed into the ER.” Maya explains calmly. “We have to get you out of here now. It's not safe.”

“I’ll take him Cap.” Miller says as he grabs Tyrone and gently helps him up to his feet.

“Thanks.” Maya says to Dean as she gets up off the ground before looking around at the chaos in the ER. “Carina!”

“Cap! We’ve got a nurse trapped over here.” Warren calls from the other side of the truck.

“One over here too!” Jack yells out from the east wall.

Maya looks back and forth between the firefighters and goes to her radio. “Chief we need an additional team in here for multiple trapped victims.”

“I’m sending Station 12 in to you now Bishop.”

“We need to be careful…only lift what’s loose.” Maya tells her team through the radio. “We don’t want anything to shift!”

“Got it Cap!”

“Yes Cap!”

“We hear you Bishop!”

“I got the guy out to Ruiz.” Hughes calls out to Maya rushing towards her before a voice comes from the other side of the nurse’s station.

“Over here!”

“I’ll go.” Vic says as she rushes over and finds the man with beam on his leg. She bends down and starts to examine the leg. “Hey, what’s your name?”

The man winces in pain before finding his voice. “Stanley West, I came in with food poisoning…this is so much worse than puking.”

Vic chuckles lightly before feeling his neck to check his pulse. “Pretty sucky day, huh.”

Stanley chuckles back before whimpering out in pain. “I think my leg is broken.”

“Hey.” Miller tells Vic as he kneels down to see if he can help. “What do you need?”

“His leg is crushed…we gotta get him out of here.” Hughes whispers in Miller’s ear.

Miller nods his head and he and Vic get ready to lift the beam off his leg. Once Vic gives him the nod they lift it up as the man yells out in agony at the sudden movement. When they put the beam to the side they start to re-examine the wound.

“Relax, dude, we're gonna get you out of here, okay?” Miller tells the man before looking around to see what they can use to get him out. “We can use the gurney board as a stretcher.”

Vic nods her head and reaches over to the gurney on the ground. She flings off the mattress before taking the slab of wood off the wheels. She puts the board next to their victim and she and Miller quickly slide him on the slab for transport. Willet seeing this immediately rushes over to help.

“Willet the board.” Vic tells the probie.

Willet nods his head as he grabs hold of the board. “Got it.”

“All right, nice and easy. On my count... one, two, three…” Miller says before the three of them grabs the board and start slowly heading to the exit.

As they carefully walk over the debris on the ground a team of firefighters come rushing through the entrance to offer back up for 19. One of their lieutenants Jennie Porter waves to Miller and Hughes.

“Hey!” Porter from 12 calls out as she and the rest of 12 rush over to Miller and Hughes at the front of the hospital. “We’re here to help transport!”

“Great, this guy is ready to go.” Hughes tells the fellow fire fighters. “Possible leg fracture.”

“We’ve got one over here too!” Montgomery calls over with Warren.

“We’re on it.” Porter says as she and two others rush over to help get the nurse out by the truck.

Maya watches as the firefighters from Station 12 help her firefighters to evacuate their trapped victims. She watches them briefly before scanning around the room…looking for her wife….still looking for her wife. Maya swallows the lump in her throat and knows she needs to update the chief. She tries to click on her radio but can’t….she needs to keep looking.

Maya bites her lip before turning to her friend on her left for help. “Jack….can you--?”

“I got it Maya!” Jack tells his friend before going to his radio. “Chief….sending out two victims now with 21.”

“Affirmative.”

“Carina!” Maya yells out bending down to look under a bed as she stands up a light fixture that had been hanging on by a wire finally crashes to the ground causing her to jump. Maya breathes heavily before letting out a terrified scream. “CARINA!”

Maya continues to look around a broken piece of the wall when her eyes fall on the ground…and she sees it. Her heart stops when she sees a crushed wall on top of somebody…only their long brown, wavy hair visible to the side.

All the oxygen leaves Maya's lungs and sputters out her mouth. “Carina.”

Maya and Carina are lying in bed facing each other with their legs tangled together wearing only their bed comforter over their bodies. They spent the early hours of the morning with passion and heat and desperate touches of lust. The two taking advantage of this time together before Carina has to go to Italy for a month. But now…there is only calmness and peace as Maya runs her fingers down Carina’s long, brown, wavy hair.

“What are you doing?” Carina asks with sleep in her voice as Maya continues her motions through her fiancé’s gorgeous locks.

“Admiring my beautiful fiancé.” Maya says with a smirk.

Carina squints her eyes at the woman in front of her. “Maya it is not nice to lie to me.”

“I’m not lying.” Maya laughs before looking back to her long brown hair. “You’re beautiful.”

Carina rolls her eyes before closing them. “I’ve been so busy with the pandemic at the hospital…I look like a constant mess.”

“No….” Maya states before leaning down to kiss Carina’s bare shoulder. “You are beautiful.”

“I doubt that…I have permanent lines from all the PPE.” Carina says through a small giggle.

“It doesn’t matter.” Maya says with a sweet smile before examining her fiancé’s face. “I love the little crinkle in your eyebrow….and I love how your deep brown eyes glisten in the morning.”

“You do?” Carina says as she nestles the side of her face down on the pillow.

Maya still smiling nods her head. “And I love your ears--”

“My ears?!” Carina exclaims as she lifts her head up.

Maya nods her head and grins. “Your ears are sexy Dr. DeLuca.”

“I think you are the one with the sexy ears Bambina…I like this spot…”Carina teases as she leans over to behind Maya’s ear. “Right here.”

Maya bites her lip when she feels Carina biting her ear softly. “Okay, you’re right…all four of our ears are hot.”

Carina laughs out loud. “Ho sempre ragione.” (I am always right.)

“I love the light brown birth mark on the back of your neck…I love the little dimple you get when you smile in your left cheek.”Maya says continuing her list.

“Maya.” Carina sighs lovingly.

Maya kisses the side of Carina’s mouth before running her hand over her hair once more. “I love your brown, beautiful, wavy hair...so incredibly soft.”

Carina lets out a snort. “It needs to be washed.”

“No…it’s perfect.” Maya retorts back as she cups Carina’s neck softly. “You are perfect.”

Carina puts her hand on top of Maya’s. “I’m not.”

“You’re pretty close.” Maya says.

Carina smiles and moves her hand to the side of Maya’s face. “You’re pretty close.”

“I’m going to keep this moment with me when you leave tomorrow.” Maya says softly.

“Me too.” Carina whispers back before leaning closer to Maya. “You make me incredibly happy.”

“Me too.” Maya whispers back before their lips meet in a soft kiss.

“CARINA!!” Maya yells as she runs over the debris on the floor to get to the brown hair on the ground.

“Warren! Montgomery!” Gibson yells out to the guys behind him. “We found her!”

Maya makes her way to the long brown hair in seconds and immediately tries to lift the heavy wall off her wife. The guys rush over as she continues to try to lift the broken concrete slab off.

“Help me lift this off her.” Maya begs her friends has he emotions begin to take over. “Please!”

“Got it!” Montgomery yells out as the four of them get on all sides of the crushed wall.

“Here we go.” Gibson says as they get ready to lift. “On my count... one, two, three…”

The firefighters lift the concrete wall piece off the victim underneath and are met with pieces of metal from what looks like a portable ultrasound cart.

“Damn it.” Warren says as he grabs the mangled cart from on top of Carina before throwing it to the side.

They look down and see Carina DeLuca unconscious on the ground with multiple scrapes and developing bruises on her face and arms. The firefighters kneel down to get a closer look and notice the pool of blood underneath her head.

“She’s bleeding from the head!” Maya yells out in a panic as she moves to press her hands on top of the gash on Carina’s head to stop the bleeding. She applies pressure to the wound before leaning over to get close to her wife’s face. “Carina…honey. Can you hear me?”

Warren carefully kneels down to get a better look at Carina’s head. “Maya let me see.”

Maya lets him take over and moves to place her head on Carina’s chest as Warren starts to examine her head.

“Is she breathing?” Montgomery asks.

Maya listens for another few seconds. “Barely.”

“Her pulse is weak.” Gibson says with his fingers still on her neck.

“Baby...I’m here.” Maya stutters out as she swallows a sob in her throat. “You’re going to be okay.”

“Blunt force trauma to the head.” Warren says as he continues to try to put pressure on the bloody open wound on top of her head before turning to the captain. “Maya we need to get her out of here.”

“Chief.” Gibson says into his radio. “We found Dr. DeLuca under some rubble; she is unconscious with a serious head injury.”

“Montgomery! Check her abdomen!” Warren tells Travis who kneels down and places his hands on her stomach.

Travis closes his eyes and winces before looking up at Jack. “I think she’s bleeding internally.”

“There could be internal bleeding.” Jack adds into his radio.

“Get her out of there. Bailey has a team of doctors heading over to the entrance now.”

“Got it Chief.” Jack replies back.

“Carina.” Maya begs her wife as a tear rolls off her face. “Please wake up… please wake up.

“Hey!” Miller yells out as he and Hughes run over to their team. “Did you find her?!”

Vic looks down and sees all of the blood covering Carina’s face and surrounding her head. “Oh my god.”

Gibson nods his head and points to a gurney on the ground. “We need a gurney slab.”

“I got it.” Willet says as he runs to grab it before bringing it back to the team.

“Did you finish the sweep?” Maya asks with her eyes still glued to her unconscious wife.

Vic blinks a few times to look away from Carina before answering. “Everybody is out.”

“Good.” Gibson says before clicking his radio. “Chief, Carina is the last victim in the emergency room.”

“Good, get her out of there!”

Warren looks around quickly and notices a neck brace hanging out from one of their supply carts before pointing in that direction. “Travis grab me that neck brace.”

“Got it.” Travis says as she rushes over to grab it before handing it over to Warren.

Maya watches as Ben carefully puts the neck brace around Carina’s neck to stabilize her head for transport. She thinks for a second that Carina is going to wake up at the intrusion but she doesn’t…and now her blood is visible as it runs down the white brace around her neck.

“Ben?” Maya whimpers.

Ben nods his head and motions for the team to get up. “Alright, let’s go.”

“On me, on me!” Gibson yells as they all grab the board. “On my count... one, two, three…”

The Station 19 firefighters pick up the wood slab with Carina DeLuca and slowly make their way through the emergency room. Warren looks down at Carina and can see all the color leaving her face with her lips turning a shade of purple.

“Okay guys, we gotta move.” Ben tells the team knowing time is not on their side. “Be careful of her head.”

Travis reaches over and feels her wrist. “Pulse is thready.”

“We gotta go!” Maya yells in sheer panic as they make their way to the entrance.

“Careful….careful.” Warren urges the team as they carefully duck under a few hanging ceiling tiles.

Maya covers Carina’s face with her body as they move under the hanging rubble before whispering in her ear. “Hold on honey…please hold on.”

Outside of the hospital Miranda Bailey is standing with a team she put together to get ready for the arrival of Carina. When she overheard Gibson on Sullivan’s radio her heart broke in her chest.

“Where are they?” Meredith Grey asks as she waits with Dr. Kim and Dr. Lincoln to help treat Carina once out of the building.

Before Bailey can answer she sees the group of firefighters walking out of the gaping hole in the emergency room. “There!”

“Miranda!” Ben yells out to his wife as they step over a fallen beam at the entrance.

Bailey looks over and sees 19 before looking to the doctors around her. “All right, everyone…multiple blunt trauma to the head protocol.”

“Let's go!” Meredith yells out as they rush over with a portable gurney to collect Carina on the sidewalk in the front.

The doctors immediately help the firefighters transport Carina on their portable gurney before doing their examination. Link takes the gauze he has been holding and holds it on Carina’s head to stop the bleeding before glancing over to Maya who looks to be in shock. “We got her Bishop, we got her.”

Maya looks around and watches as the doctors and nurses start hooking her up to portable monitors and oxygen bags before they start rushing around her to examine the extent of her injuries. She blinks a few times before looking down at her wife’s hand in hers. “Help her…just help her.”

“We need you all to stand back!” Miranda snaps at the surrounding firefighters before turning to the fire captain. “Bishop, you gotta move.”

Maya opens her mouth wide to keep the tears away. “I can’t leave her.”

“We need space to work Bishop!” Meredith exclaims as Sullivan comes rushing over to the group to see if he can help.

“Maya we need to let them work, come on.” Sullivan tells Bishop but when she doesn’t budge an inch he calls for assistance. “Herrera!”

Andy rushes over and puts her arms around Maya. “I got her…I got her.”

“Andy.” Maya cries.

“Come on…” Andy urges as she guides Maya back to give the doctors room to work.

Maya watches her hand leave Carina’s before her wife’s hand drops down on the gurney.

“Obvious head and chest injuries.” Link hisses out through clenched teeth. “Where’s Amelia?”

“She’ll meet us upstairs.” Bailey answers before leaning down to Carina’s ear. “Carina…we've got you, you hear me?”

“She's hemorrhaging.” Meredith says as she places her hands on Carina’s abdomen. “Wait. Hold on….is that blood coming from her chest?”

“What?” Bailey says before taking a closer look. “No it’s all from her head.”

Nico takes his light and examines Carina’s eyes. “Pupils equal and reactive.”

“We need to hold pressure.” Meredith states as she looks over to the monitor.

“Let's go! Come on!” Link says to the group of doctors around him…wanting to get her upstairs as quickly as possible.

They get ready to transport when Maggie Pierce and Levi Schmitt come running over after just hearing the news about Carina.

“Hey! I just got out of surgery.” Maggie says as she rushes over to the group. “What the hell happened?”

Schmitt zeroes in on DeLuca on the gurney covered in blood. “Oh my god.”

Bailey just shakes her head before answering simply. “A truck crashed through my ER.”

Nico nods his head. “It came outta nowhere!”

“IV is in.” Link announces to the group.

Meredith continues to feel around Carina’s abdomen before looking to her sister. “Maggie we need you.”

Maggie nods her head and takes a stethoscope from a nearby nurse before putting it to Carina’s chest to check her heart.

“We need to do a trauma ultrasound.” Link tells Meredith before waving over Helm. “Tell C.T. to get ready for her and hang two bags of B negative.”

Maggie listens intently before putting the stethoscope around her neck. “There could be blood in the upper quadrants.”

“We won’t know anything until we get her upstairs.” Meredith says.

“Is there anything I can do?” Nico asks.

“Call upstairs and tell them to prep an O.R.” Link tells the doctor urgently. “Stat.”

“I’m on it.” Nico says before taking out his phone to make the call.

“We’ve got you Carina; you are going to be just fine.” Meredith says before she moves to get to Carina’s other side.

“We got her Chief.” Link tells his boss as he takes another look at the monitor. “You need to stay here.”

Bailey looks up at Maggie. “I can’t lose another DeLuca.”

“We got her.” Maggie tells her boss with a firm nod.

“Let's move. Here we go. Everybody, ready?” Meredith Grey says as they grab the IV hanger and monitor before taking hold of the gurney. “All right. Go, go, go.”

“Let's move. Go!” Maggie yells as they start to push the gurney on the sidewalk towards the side entrance.

Maya still in Andy’s arms watch as they wheel her wife away. She runs back over with her team behind her to find out what is going on.

“Bailey?!” Maya yells out as the team rushes back over to Miranda. “Where are they taking her?”

Bailey grabs hold of Maya’s arms with her hands. “They’re taking her to get a C.T. and then possibly in for surgery.”

“Surgery.” Maya mutters out softly before placing her hand on her forehead. “On her head?!”

“We don’t know yet.” Bailey sighs before tilting her head sympathetically.

Andy hears this and tries to comfort her friend. “Maya, it will be--”

“DON’T!” Maya snaps before stepping away.

“Just give her a minute Herrera.” Bailey says to the firefighter as they watch Maya start to pace with her hands on top of her helmet.

Bailey and Andy watch helplessly as Maya crouches down to the ground, still cradling her helmet with her hands in despair.

Inside the hospital the team of doctors is rushing through the first floor hallway trying to get to an elevator when the alarms go off on the monitor. The doctors freeze when Carina codes on the gurney.

“V-fib! She's crashing.” Link says before motioning to Kim, “Start bagging her. Come on.”

“Starting CPR.” Maggie says as she starts compression on her chest and Nico keeps squeezing the bag…offering air to the injured woman.

Link looks over at the monitor and shakes his head. “Okay, we need to intubate.”

“Here.” Schmitt says as he holds out the kit.

“I got it.” Meredith says as she takes the tool and light before putting the tube in Carina’s mouth. She then takes the bag from the mouth piece and connects it to the tube. “Hold in-line stabilization.

“Still crashing!” Maggie yells out as a couple of nurses push over a crash cart from a nearby exam room.

Meredith grabs the scissors from Schmitt and cuts open Carina’s scrubs before Link places the pads on her chest. They continue compressions as they get the defibrillator ready to use.

“Charging to 120.” Maggie says as she holds up the paddles. “Clear.”

Maggie presses the paddles on Carina’s chest and when the jolt comes…her body jumps.

Link looks at the monitor and shakes his head. “Still in V-fib.”

“All right. Charge the paddles to 200.” Maggie says as she holds up the paddles again.

Meredith looks down at the woman and shakes her head. “Hold on Carina.”

“Charged to 200.” Maggie says to get everybody out of the way. “Clear.”

Maggie presses the paddles on Carina’s chest and when the jolt comes…her body jumps again. The doctors watch the monitor flat line for a second before something moves on.

“She’s back.” Link says with a brief sigh of relief. “Okay, we need to get her to the OR now.”

“Move, move, move.” Maggie says as they step over to the closest elevator.

As they wheel Carina into the elevator Meredith turns to Schmitt in the hallway. “Go give Dr. Bailey an update…only Dr. Bailey.”

“What about Dr. DeLuca’s wife?” Schmitt asks hesitantly as he looks at the broken OB on the gurney.

“Let’s wait to update her until we know more. We don’t know how bad it is yet.” Meredith says before the elevator doors close.
