19. CHAPTER 19

CHAPTER 19

Maya stands in complete shock as she looks at her father standing in front of her at her door…unannounced and unwelcomed.

“What are you doing here?” Maya asks as she subconsciously holds Ginny tighter in her arms.

Lane Bishop’s eyes are glued on the baby. “So I wasn’t seeing things.”

Maya glances at Ginny before fidgeting uncomfortably. “You can’t be here.”

“I saw her with the baby at the grocery store.” Lane says with disgust in his voice before shaking his head. “I prayed that you didn’t get roped in to anything.”

“Get out.” Maya demands.

“This is her baby then?” Lane says finally looking at his daughter. “They look alike.”

“You know her name Dad.” Maya says as she glares at the man in front of her. “You ran into her at the hospital and berated her in the emergency room.”

Lane bites his bottom lip to try to keep his cool. “I stand by what I said…you lost focus when she came into the picture.”

Shortly after their honeymoon Carina was working in the ER when Lane Bishop was brought in with a head laceration from falling off a ladder. When he figured out who Carina was he couldn’t help but start blaming her for everything that went wrong with Maya’s career. He yelled at her for taking his daughter away, his wife leaving, and the fact that Maya could possibly lose her job and never become chief of the department. Eventually security was called and when Maya found out what happened a restraining order was filed immediately. She hasn’t seen the man since…and doesn’t want to see him now.

“Her name is Dr. Carina DeLuca and she is my wife.” Maya says firmly.

Lane laughs bitterly and takes a step closer. “Another stupid mistake you’ve made since losing your edge.”

“You need to leave.” Maya says as she steps back and holds out her hand to stop the man from coming any closer to her daughter. “This is in violation of the restraining order.”

“You’d call the cops on your own father.” Lane scoffs.

Maya nods he head and points for him to leave. “I will give you ten seconds to turn around and never come back.”

“She’s cute.” Lane says as he nods to Ginny in her arms. “Does your mother know you are playing house?”

“I am not playing house Dad!” Maya snaps getting frustrated. “This is my daughter and Carina is my wife.”

Lane just shakes his head. “You didn’t answer my question….does your mother know?”

“Yes.” Maya answers.

“Katherine should have told me.” Lane bites back.

Maya’s skin begins to crawl when he mentions her mother. “Mom doesn’t want anything to do with you.”

“Your mother will come to her senses and come back....she can only hide with her sister for so long.” Lane continues smugly.

“Leave Mom alone.” Maya demands firmly.

“Don’t tell me what to do!” Lane yells out finally snapping.

Maya covers Ginny’s ear with her hand and steps back into the apartment as Jack rushes to the door.

“Hey, what’s going on here?” Jack asks.

“This is my dad.” Maya says before glaring back at Lane. “He was just leaving.”

“You heard her.” Jack says as he too glares at the man he’s heard so much about. “Leave.”

Lane laughs out loud sarcastically as he tries to step closer again. “Are you going to hide behind some big strong man again?”

“Woe.” Jack says as he holds out his hand to stop the man from coming closer.

Maya yells back for back up. “Travis!”

Travis runs to the door. “Yea.”

“Take her into the kitchen or my room please.” Maya says as she hands off the baby to Travis.

“You got it Cap.” Travis says as he quickly takes the girl into the apartment and away from Lane.

Maya watches Travis take Ginny into the kitchen before turning back to her dad who is getting more agitated by the minute. The last thing she wants is for Ginny to see her dad blowing his top.

“Do you want me to call the police?” Jack asks Maya.

“Yes Maya Katherine…do you need him to swoop in and save you?” Lane jokes coldly.

Jack squints his eyes at the man. “Your daughter doesn’t need me to save her.”

“My daughter has turned weak.” Lane says as he places his hands on his hips. “She has lost the respect of everybody that matters.”

“Captain Bishop is one of the finest fire fighters in all of Seattle.” Jack informs the cold hearted son of a bitch at the door. “I’m proud to follow her command…she has my respect.”

“I said she lost the respect of people that matter.” Lane says still laughing coldly. “You don’t matter.”

Jack takes a step closer to Lane but is stopped by Maya who glares at her father. “No, you don’t matter.”

Travis appears back at the door and zeroes in on the man. “I thought you were leaving.”

Maya hearing Travis looks for Ginny. “Where’s--”

“She’s good.” Travis reassures his friend before looking back at Lane. “What’s your call Captain?”

“Lane is going to leave now.” Maya says coolly.

Travis nods his head. “Good.”

“I will not be told what to do by you!” Lane yells.

“That’s it.” Jack says as he again tries to get to the man to physically remove him from the building.

“Jack no!” Maya says as she tries to stop the man with Travis.

Travis holds Jack back before turning around to face Lane Bishop. “Get out!”

Just then Theo Ruiz, Vic Hughes, and Carter Willet come walking down the hallway. When they heard shouting they hustled to Maya’s apartment just in time to see Jack almost charge at an older guy at the door.

“Hey!” Ruiz yells as he makes his way down the hallway with Vic and Carter. “What’s going on here?!”

Maya looks around her dad and sees the fire fighters from 19. “What are you guys doing here?”

“We ditched on 23 and came to help.” Vic says as she stares down the man at the door. “Miller was going to come too but Pru is sick.”

“They picked me up on the way.” Carter adds as he takes in the obvious tension. “Is everything okay Captain Bishop?”

Lane shakes his head and scrunches his face at his daughter. “You disgust me…you were on your way to becoming Battalion Chief…and now…”

Theo shocked at what he is hearing waves his hand around. “Who is this creep?”

“Maya’s dad.” Travis answers as he keeps his eyes on Jack and Lane to make sure no fists are thrown.

“Oh….” Vic drawls before shaking her head. “Gross.”

“I want to talk to my daughter alone!” Lane snaps.

Travis answers quickly. “No.”

“You have gone soft.” Lane growls at Maya.

“I have gone soft…you are absolutely right.” Maya says as she steps around Travis to get closer to the man who raised her. “I am finally at peace and I have warmth and joy in my life.”

Lane simply snorts and shakes his head.

“And I am still driven and focused and tough.” Maya says as she continues to lay it all out for her dad. “But now…I get to be both…I get to be whole instead of shattered pieces of who you wanted me to be.”

“Now wait one minute young lady--” Lane starts to say but is cut off immediately by Maya.

“No….I am a whole person and you have no power over me.” Maya says as she lets out a slight chuckle at the pathetic man. “You trampled all over your family….we were scared of you, terrified.”

Lane lets out a heated breath. “Maya--”

“But I….I will protect and take care of my family.” Maya says as tries to keep her emotions in control before putting her hand on her chest. “So that’s what I’m going to do.”

Lane shakes his head. “Maya--”

“Travis call the police.” Maya says…done with this conversation and done with him.

“Got it.” Travis says as he takes out his cell phone.

“You are pathetic!” Lane yells as his face gets red with anger. “A pathetic excuse of a daugh--”

“Hey!” Vic exclaims as she points at the man. “Get the hell away from our Captain!”

Lane turns to Vic and glares at the woman. “Or what?”

“Or we’ll give you a Station 19 ass kicking.” Vic retorts as Theo steps closer by her side.

Carter nods his head. “You don’t want to mess with us.”

“Yea…the probie’s a hair puller.” Theo adds as he scowls at the older man.

“The SPD is sending a unit.” Travis tells his captain as Ginny starts to cry from inside the apartment.

Maya looks back to the sound but Travis puts his hand on her arm. “I got her.”

“Last chance.” Maya tells her dad.

“Fine….I’ll go.” Lane says bitterly as he starts to step away before pointing back into the apartment. “But that baby is not my family.”

“Finally something we agree on.” Maya chirps back.

Jack simply points towards the exit. “Go.”

“Now.” Vic adds.

“Pathetic.” Lane scoffs as he gives his daughter one final glare before making his way through the angry mob of fire fighters to head out of the building.

Travis comes back with Ginny in his arms. “He left?”

Maya nods her head before reaching for Ginny who dives into her arms. “Hi Sweetheart.”

“I’m gonna go make sure he’s actually leaving.” Theo tells the group before heading towards the building exit.

“Thank you.” Maya says as she kisses her daughter’s cheek and rubs her back with her hand before turning to Montgomery. “Travis did you actually call the police?”

Travis shakes his head. “No…I was waiting to see if he would leave on his own.”

“Yea.” Maya says as she finally exhales out a breath she has been holding in her chest since she answered the door.

Carter shakes his head and slips his hands in his jean pockets. “Your dad reminds me of a Lifetime movie villain.”

“That’s because he basically is.” Maya says before closing her eyes and resting her nose against Ginny’s cheek.

“Are you okay?” Vic asks hesitantly.

“Mmmmm.” Maya hums as she sways with Ginny in her arms.

Travis looks over and squints his eyes at the blonde. “Are you sure?”

“Mmmmm.” Maya hums again before looking to her friends. “I’m good.”

“Is she actually good?” Carter whispers to Vic.

Maya rolls her eyes and turns to the probie fire fighter. “I can hear you Willet.”

“Sorry Cap.” Willet murmurs.

“Do you want us to call Carina?” Jack asks.

Travis nods his head and pulls out his phone. “I can call her right now.”

“No!” Maya exclaims.

“Why not?” Travis asks confused.

“It is her first day back at the hospital since the accident.” Maya explains before pointing at her team with her free hand. “She is under enough stress…nobody is telling her anything.”

Travis lets out a nervous chuckle. “I mean…you have to tell her.”

“Nobody.” Maya repeats sternly before pointing back into the apartment. “Let’s get back to work please.”

“This is healthy.” Vic mutters under her breath as they all get ready to head inside.

“Wait!” Maya shouts out to get everybody t stop moving for a second. She looks at her daughter before taking a steadying breath. “Thank you all for standing up for me.”

Jack shrugs his shoulders. “We’re family.”

“I know.” Maya says getting chocked up as Theo comes walking back over from the down the hallway. “Well?”

“He’s gone.” Theo says with a sigh of relief.

Jack claps his hands together and moves back into the apartment. “Awesome! Let’s get back to work! Probie let’s go!”

“Coming!” Carter yells as he walks through the door to follow the lieutenant.

Vic nods her head and walks through the door. “I will paint your entire apartment if it means I don’t have to hang out with the dorks from 23.”

“She is not kidding.” Theo adds as he and Maya follow Jack towards the nursery.

Travis stops Vic in her tracks and hisses in her ear. “Are we seriously not going to call Carina?”

“Let’s just keep things light for right now…fluffy.” Vic suggests as she claps her hand on his arm before walking past him.

“Fluffy.” Travis mutters to himself. “Like Cujo.”

“Let’s go Montgomery!” Maya calls from inside the baby’s room.

Travis rolls his eyes and closes the front door. “I’m coming!”

------------------------------------------------------------------------

“What is going on here?” Miranda asks as she walks into the room and heads straight to Amelia who is doing the exam with Carina. “I just ran into Robert Sullivan.”

“I am fine.” Carina grumbles.

“How is she?” Dr. Bailey asks Shepherd completely ignoring the woman’s quick answer.

Carina rolls her eyes and looks to the ceiling. “I am fine.”

That is not entirely true but Carina is going to run those two words through her brain until she actually feels them. The truth is that is she freaking out. When she felt the blood on her fingertips coming from her nose every possible worst case scenario ran through her head. Was it an aneurysm or another complication from surgery? She was getting better…she was feeling better until she wasn’t. When Carina woke up she felt dizzy and tired but didn’t want to admit it to herself. She was so close to feeling like her old self but now that could all be out the window.

“I’m still running my examination.” Amelia tells her boss before putting her stethoscope on to check Carina’s breathing. “Deep breath.”

Dr. Bailey examines the woman for herself as she takes the deep breath. “Has the bleeding stopped?”

“Yes.” Carina says through another big breath. “Thankfully.”

“It was a good amount of blood though.” Andy says as she continues to fidget where she stands while watching Dr. Shepherd closely.

Dr. Shepherd places her stethoscope around her neck and feels around Carina’s neck for any swollenness. “Have you been feeling dizzy or lightheaded?”

“A little.” Carina admits before cursing herself for not noticing the signs. “I just assumed it was part of my recovery.”

“It probably is.” Amelia reassures her worried friend. “When did the dizziness start?”

“This morning.” Carina answers.

“Well…your breathing all sounds good.” Amelia says as she tilts her head. “Do you feel any difficulties with your lungs?”

Carina shakes her head. “No…my breathing is fine.”

“Any headaches?” Amelia asks.

“No.” Carina answers softly.

“I want to take a look at the back of your throat.” Dr. Shepherd says as she gets Carina to open her mouth so she can look in there with her light pen.

Dr. Bailey watches Amelia look around and can’t help but ask for an update. “Dr. Shepherd?”

“Everything looks fine here.” Amelia says as she pulls the pen back and puts it in her front coat pocket.

“So we can rule out a posterior bleed.” Dr. Bailey concludes out loud.

“I believe so.” Amelia says as before placing a hand down on Carina’s knee to get her to look up at her. “It’s probably nothing.”

Carina sighs and squints at her friend. “Or…it could be a brain aneurysm.”

“We don’t know that.” Amelia says firmly not wanting her friend to go to the worst case scenario. “With your other symptoms I am guessing a blood vessel popped.”

“Is that why her nose started bleeding?” Dr. Bailey asks the neurosurgeon. “A rupture?”

Amelia nods her head and lets out a long breath. “More than likely we are dealing with Epistaxis.”

“Uhh…what?” Andy asks confused as she finally pipes in to the conversation.

“Her nosebleed was probably caused by a blood vessel in her nose bursting.” Dr. Shepherd explains to the fire fighter. “There is a chance that the vessel was damaged during the accident and has finally burst.”

“So it’s not serious.” Andy hopefully concludes as she looks around at the doctors. “I mean nosebleeds happen and it’s stopped, right?”

“Yes.” Amelia says to Andy before looking to Carina. “I still want to run a CT...just to make sure.”

“I agree.” Dr. Bailey chirps in sternly.

Carina looks to her colleagues and squints her eyes. “If it is probably Epistaxis then why do I need a CT?”

“I want to make sure…rule everything else out.” Amelia retorts.

“We will take every precaution to make sure that your progress does not relapse.” Dr. Bailey says firmly to Carina. “Is that understood Dr. DeLuca?”

Carina nods her head and briefly closes her eyes. “Yes Chief.”

“You did experience major trauma to your head and said that you have felt dizzy since this morning.” Amelia adds.

“So it could be bad.” Carina says as she starts to worry. The last thing she and her family needs right now is for her to have some sort of relapse and land back in to ha hospital bed…or worse another surgery.

“I don’t think so.” Amelia says repeating herself before folding her hands together below. “But I want to double check with a scan.”

“Okay.” Carina sighs as she nods her head and points to the door. “Let’s do this.”

Dr. Bailey nods her to Amelia before going back to the OB/GYN. “Carina do you want me to call Maya?”

“No.” Carina says immediately with a bitter laugh.

Andy hearing this tries to reason with her friend. “Carina.”

“My wife found me unconscious covered in blood and sat for days thinking I wasn’t going to wake up.” Carina says as she zeroes in on the three women in front of her. “I don’t want to call Maya until we know what we are dealing with.”

Amelia nods her head and waves her hands down. “Okay.”

“Andy?” Carina asks.

“Hey.” Andy says as she holds her hands up in defense. “I owe you one.”

Carina nods her head before looking at her boss. “Chief?”

“I won’t say anything.” Dr. Bailey grumbles before raising an eyebrow at Carina. “Though I will say…you should call your wife.”

Carina sighs and runs her hand over her face. “I will…after the scan.”

“Mmmmm.” Bailey hums as she shakes her head not liking this at all.

“Maya is going to kill me…you know this.” Andy tells Carina.

Carina rolls her eyes. “I will handle Maya.”

“You will handle Maya?” Amelia says as she laughs out loud before getting glares at by Carina up on the table. “You will handle Maya.”

“Let’s take her up Dr. Shepherd.” Dr. Bailey says.

Carina nods to the doctors before turning to the other woman in the room. “Andy you don’t have to stay.”

“If I leave you here alone your wife will actually kill me.” Andy says firmly “I’m staying.”

Carina reaches out and takes Andy’s hand in her own. “Thank you.”

“We’ll let you know when we are done.” Dr. Bailey says to Andy as she waves in a nurse with a wheel chair into the room.

Carina spots the wheelchair and pouts to Miranda. “Is this necessary?”

“Get in the chair DeLuca.” Bailey orders immediately…no nonsense in her voice.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Later on Carina is inside the CT machine while Dr. Bailey and Dr. Shepherd watch from the observation room on the other side of the glass. Their eyes don’t move from the monitor to make sure that they don’t miss anything that comes through the scan.

Carina DeLuca was pretty quiet when they helped her onto the bed and slid her in to get the scans. Now all they can do is watch…and wait.

Amelia hits the button on the intercom to check on the woman. “DeLuca you okay?”

“Yes.” Carina says from inside.

“Just makes sure to stay still so we can get the scans.” Amelia reminds the woman.

Carina from inside the machine closes her eyes annoyed. “Sono un dottore non un idiota. So come funziona.”(I am a doctor not an idiot. I know how it works.)

Amelia bites her lip and shakes her head before pressing the button again. “I don’t think yelling in Italian is going to help get the best scans.”

Carina lets out a frustrated huff. “Non sto urlando…lo saprai se sto urlando.” (I am not yelling…you will know if I am yelling.)

“Ok.” Amelia sighs before turning the intercom off.

Dr. Teddy Altman comes walking into the observation room and tries to get a look through the glass.

“Is it true?” Teddy asks the two doctors. “Is Carina in there?”

“Yes…but she is fine.” Amelia reassures her friend.

Teddy looks over to Dr. Bailey. “What happened?”

“DeLuca was with Andy Herrera doing a pre-natal exam when her nose started bleeding.” Dr. Bailey starts to explain to the worried surgeon.

“You really think she is fine?” Teddy asks Amelia.

Amelia nods her head and takes another look at the monitor. “I do…but with everything she has been through…”

“It is good to cover all our bases.” Dr. Bailey adds.

Teddy lets out a breath hoping that all of this optimism is warranted. When she turns to the monitor to get a better look at the incoming results her phone starts to go off in her coat pocket. She takes it out and curses at the timing.

“Damn it…I’m getting paged to the pit.” Teddy huffs before putting the phone back in her pocket. “Did anybody call Maya?”

“We were asked not to…right Chief.” Amelia says to Bailey with a smirk.

“I did not call Bishop.” Bailey states.

Amelia still smirking squints her eyes at her boss. “But you did call somebody, right?”

Bailey keeps her eyes focused on the screen. “I…did…not…call…Bishop.”

“Got it.” Amelia chuckles as she goes back to the monitor.

Teddy shakes her head and points to carina through the glass. “Will you please keep me posted?”

Amelia nods her head. “Of course.”

“Thanks.” Teddy says before leaving Amelia and Miranda alone once again.

Miranda Bailey looks at the monitor and lets out a long breath before closing her eyes. “I am praying that we are right and nothing more serious is going on here.”

“I know.” Amelia says with through a sad breath. “I know.”

Outside in the waiting room Andy and Robert are sitting side by side in silence waiting for news on Carina and the CT results. Today was supposed to be routine concerning the baby. The ultrasound looked good and they were excited to find out the sex of the baby soon. But now all they can think of is the look on Carina’s face when she realizes she was bleeding from the nose.

Robert taps his finger on his coffee and keeps looking at Andy who is staring off into space…lost in her heavy thoughts.

Andy shakes her head bitterly. “Carina doesn’t deserve this.”

“I know.” Robert sighs.

“How long do these things take again?” Andy asks as she continues to fidget in her chair. “I can’t remember.”

“Carina is going to be okay.” Robert says softly.

Andy closes her eyes and leans back in to the chair. “I know.”

“Good.” Robert says before looking around…not wanting to gaze at his estranged wife for too long.

Andy looks to Robert and can sense his nervousness. “I’m glad you were there to help.”

“Me too.” Robert says as he throws her a small smile. “You did a nice job with Carina…you stayed cool.”

“Inside I was freaking out.” Andy says as she waves her hand around before rambling on about the situation. “She has already been through so much…I can’t believe this is happening.

Robert can’t resist the urge to place his hand on her knee. “Hey…she is going to be okay.”

Andy flinches at the act causing Robert to quickly pull his hand away.

“I’m sorry.” Robert says quietly as rubs his hands up and down his thighs.

Andy swallows the lump in her throat before changing the subject. “I should call Maya.”

“DeLuca asked you not to.” Sullivan reminds her.

“I know.” Andy sighs before shaking her head. “But….”

“But what?” Sullivan asks.

“She didn’t say anything about anybody else.” Andy says with a raised eye brow as a thought pops up in her head. “Carina has a lot of people who care about her and would want to know about this.”

“Andy.” Robert mutters knowing immediately where this is going.

Andy innocently looks to him for confirmation. “Right?”

“Right.” Robert says through a sigh as he watches Andy take out her phone. “I just uhh…wouldn’t call Gibson or Montgomery.”

“That’s a good point.” Andy says before scrolling through her contacts.

Meanwhile back at the apartment Vic walks out of Maya’s room and softly closes the door behind her. She offered to help put Ginny down for her nap so the others could get back to painting. Vic quietly walks by the nursery where Theo is helping Maya with a wall and heads to the living room.

When she walks into the living room she sees Jack and Carter using Ginny’s little stuffed animals as basketballs, taking turns shooting them into a clothes basket they put on the chair in the corner. She resists the urge to roll her eyes and takes a glance at a quiet Travis sitting on the couch.

“Okay…Ginny is down for her nap and Theo is helping Maya in the nursery.” Vic says as she walks closer to the guys.

“Good.” Jack says before he tosses a stuffed frog to Carter. “You are in time to see the probie get his butt kicked.”

“Please.” Carter deadpans.

Vic shakes her head at the basketball game before turning to the couch where her best friend is sitting nervously with his legs crossed and his finger in his mouth. “Trav…stop biting your nails.”

Travis hops off the couch and puts his hands on his hips. “We have to tell Carina.”

Willet ignores the panicking fire fighter and shoots a stuffed frog towards the clothes basket but misses it completely. “Shoot…I never miss the right hook.”

“If you tell Carina…Bishop is going to put you on desk and toilet duty for a month.” Vic tells her best friend.

“I don’t think I care.” Travis says as he shakes his head before feeling his face. “Am I breaking out?”

“You need to chill.” Jack tells Montgomery as he shoots a stuffed duck into the clothes basket before pointing at Willet. “Boom...you’re up probie.”

Carter grabs the duck from the basket and walks over to where Jack is standing and shoots the stuffed animal towards the clothes basket but it bounces off the edge of the basket and topples to the ground. “Damn it!”

“Is that an O?” Jack asks with a smirk as he starts to spell with his fingers “H…O.”

Carter rolls his eyes at Gibson. “I know how to spell smart ass.”

“You can address me as Lieutenant.” Jack corrects smugly.

“I know how to spell Lieutenant Smart Ass.” Carter deadpans as he grabs the nearest stuffed animal to chuck at Jack.

“What about this one?” Jack asks as he gets ready to shoot the stuffed animal but it gets quickly grabbed out of his hand by Travis. “Hey!”

“How can you play some stupid game at a time like this!?” Travis hisses under his breath.

Jack rolls his eyes and points towards the baby room where Maya is still painting. “I am taking my lead from Maya….she stood up to her father and now she wants to get back to painting.”

“Gibson is right…we should let Maya take this at her own pace.” Vic agrees.

Travis just shakes his head before reminding his friends of the track record. “The last time Maya saw her dad she almost punched him square in the face.”

“Yea…that is true.” Vic mumbles.

Travis nods his head before continuing. “And before that he pulled her hair and then she cut it all off in the bathroom.”

“I was there for that actually.” Jack chirps in.

“We need to tell Carina.” Travis says as he points to the group.

“Nobody is telling Carina anything.” Maya says as she and Theo walk in to the living room after hearing the end of the conversation.

Vic’s eyes go wide. “Maya we’re just--”

“I know that you are all worried about me….but I’m okay actually.” Maya assures her friends as she starts to pick up toys off the ground to put away. “I do not want to disrupt Carina during her first day back at the hospital.

Travis opens his mouth to speak but changes his mind a few times before finally blurting out an actually sentence. “Don’t you think she would want to know about your dad?”

“I will tell her later.” Maya says as she puts the toys away in the corner wicker basket. “The last thing my wife needs right now is to be stressed and worried about me.”

“What can we do?” Jack asks.

“You have already helped more than you know.” Maya tells the group before pointing back towards the bedroom. “I would however like to finish up the final coat in the baby’s room.”

Theo nods his head and holds up his hand. “I’m in.”

“Me too.” Carter agrees as he walks out with Theo.

Maya smiles at the newbies before pointing to Gibson, Hughes, and Montgomery. “What about you three?”

“Of course.” Vic says as she takes out her phone from her back pocket to see the new text coming through.

“You got it Cap.” Travis says to Maya who turns around to walk back towards Ginny’s room. When Maya’s back is turned Vic holds out the phone for Travis to see. “Oh my god.”

“What?” Jack asks confused as he steps closer.

Travis rereads it and starts to freak out. “Oh my god!”

Maya hearing this walks back in to the living room to see what is wrong. “What is it?”

“Travis.” Vic murmurs, warning him to keep quiet.

Travis starts to spiral before sputtering out an excuse. “Uhh…I think I left my uniform in the wash.”

“What?” Maya asks confused.

Travis swallows the lump in his throat before giggling out nervously. “You know how much I hate wrinkles.”

Vic nods her head in agreement. “So much…it’s easily in his top ten pet peeves.”

“Right.” Maya drawls as she squints at her friends.

“You have ten pet peeves?” Jack asks Travis.

“I said it made his top ten.” Vic clarifies to Gibson. “Montgomery has at least 35.”

Maya just shakes her head and points back to Ginny’s room. “Can we get back to the room?”

“We are right behind you Cap!” Travis yells out as Maya walks away.

“Too loud.” Vic whispers to Travis.

“We’ll be right there!” Travis yells again in a softer tone.

Vic reads the text again and places her hand on her head. “Oh my god, oh my god.”

Jack still confused waves his hands around. “What?”

Vic looks around the corner to make sure Maya is actually back in the baby’s room and out of ear shot. “Andy just texted me that Carina is getting a CT.”

“What?” Jack asks getting concerned as he steps over to see the text for himself. “Why?”

“Her nose started bleeding during Andy’s pre-natal exam.” Vic whispers.

“Is she okay?” Jack asks as Vic gets another text from Herrera.

“She says that Shepherd thinks it’s just a popped blood vessel.” Vic says as she looks over the text once again. “The CT is just a precaution.”

Travis’ eyes go wide and he points towards Ginny’s room. “We have to tell Maya.”

“Andy said Carina doesn’t want Maya to know yet.” Vic says.

“You have got to be kidding me!” Travis hisses under his breath.

“So…we were helping Maya keep something from Carina.” Travis says as he starts to run through the whole situation. “And now…we are helping Carina keep something from Maya.”

“It’s good to know that you have been paying attention Gibson.” Vic bites back sarcastically.

Travis shakes his head and runs his hand through his hair. “These two are going to make me go grey.”

Vic winces and examines his hair. “Trav…you are already going--”

“Now!” Travis exclaims.

Vic shakes her head. “Nope…so what now?”

“Okay…now I am actually breaking out.” Travis says as he starts to claw at his neck. “I can feel the blotchiness on my neck.”

Before Jack and Vic can say anything back there is a knock at the door and the three go still. Immediately they think that Lane Bishop is back at the door for round two.

“Oh my god.” Travis huffs as he stares at the door. “He’s back.”

“He wouldn’t dare.” Vic hisses as they walk over to the entrance where Jack reaches and opens the door to reveal Ben Warren in the hallway. Maya walks out of the room and sees the fire fighter at her front door.

“Warren?” Maya says surprised.

“Hey…good you haven’t left yet.” Ben says as he walks through the door.

Travis’ eyes go wide. “Oh no.”

“I was in the neighborhood when I got the call from Miranda…thought I’d see if you wanted a ride to the hospital.” Ben says gently to the woman.

“Oh boy.” Jack huffs.

Travis just shakes his head and mumbles under his breath. “This is bad…this is bad.”

“We’re all going to be scrubbing toilets till the day we die.” Vic pouts.

“Why would I need to go to the hospital?” Maya asks confused before her thoughts go to Andy and her appointment. “Is something wrong with the baby…is it Andy?”

Ben sighs and comes to the realization that Maya is in the dark. “You don’t know.”

“Know what?!” Maya yells out getting frustrated.

Ben takes a breath before explaining what happened earlier. “Carina’s nose started bleeding earlier and Amelia is getting her a CT now.”

“What?!” Maya snaps as her stomach drops to the floor.

“I thought you knew.” Ben admits feeling bad that he is the one breaking the news.

“None of us knew Warren!” Vic yells out as she points to the group. “None of us!”

“Yup!” Travis exclaims loudly before crossing his arms across his chest. “Brand new information!”

Jack covers his forehead with his hand. “Jesus.”

“Oh my god.” Maya stutters out as she reaches for her phone out of her back pocket to immediately text her wife. “Uhhh….”

“Maya…she’s not going to answer her phone right now.” Ben says as he tries to guide her towards the door. “Come on…I’ll drive you to Grey-Sloan.”

Maya swallows the lump in her throat before turning to the other guys. “Will you guys stay with Ginny?”

“Of course.” Travis reassures the woman.

Jack nods and touches his chest. “We got her Bishop.”

“Let’s go.” Maya says as she grabs her jacket and keys before rushing out the apartment.

Ben steps to the door before turning around. “You all knew didn’t you?”

“Little bit.” Vic chirps.

“Guess I won’t have bathroom duty for a while.” Ben says with a smirk as he walks out of the apartment.

“Very funny Dad!” Travis calls after him.
