Nicole slammed her bedroom door and sank down to the floor, leaning against the door. On the other side, Waverly tried to push it open with no success.
"Just leave me alone, Waverly!"
"Let me in, please. We need to talk."
"I don't want to talk!"
"What if I just talk?"
"Fuck off!" Nicole snapped.
"I'm not going anywhere until we sort this out."
"Suit yourself. You can stay out there."
"Fine. I'm really sorry, you know. I was going to tell you, I didn't think you'd find out like that."
"Save your breath, I'm not listening."
Waverly tried the door again, this time it was the lock that stopped her rather than Nicole's weight. She crouched on the ground and peered under. Nicole had moved, maybe to her bed. Waverly sighed loudly and then knocked. "I'm not letting you in, idiot!"
"Please, Nicole!"
"We can talk some other time, right now I'm exhausted and upset and I really don't want to see your stupid face," she shouted back.
Inside the room, Nicole was grumpily getting ready for bed. She changed into pyjamas and brushed her teeth and hair. And she became more pissed off when she realised that she'd left her phone in her coat pocket downstairs. She groaned loudly with frustration.
"Are you okay?" came the sweet, usually soothing voice through the door. She ignored her girlfriend, though a part of her beneath the anger wanted to forget why she was mad and just be held by the angelic brunette. But it wasn't an easy thing to forget. "Nicole?"
"I'm fine, really fucking great," she growled, "go home and sleep, Earp."
With that, Nicole got into bed and cried quietly to herself until she was asleep.
The redhead woke in the morning with a dreadful headache and immediately remembered everything from the day before. She sighed as she dragged herself out of bed and walked into her the en-suite.
Nicole stood at the sink and splashed her tear stained face with cold water. She stared at her reflection, at the dark circles under her eyes that weren't there yesterday morning and the messy red hair. She frowned and got out her hairbrush, taming the wild hair before she left the room.
She looked in her closet and decided she wasn't leaving the house today so why bother getting dressed at all. , she thought, . Nicole unlocked the bedroom door and pulled it open, then she screamed.
Waverly had fallen half into the room, apparently she'd spent the night sleeping against the door. Now she was holding her head where it just hit the ground as tears welled up in her hazel eyes.
"Fuck that really hurt," she mumbled, slowly standing up. Her clothes were all wrinkled and her back sounded like bubble wrap popping as she stretched. "Sorry, I didn't mean to fall asleep."
Nicole didn't know what to say. She couldn't be angry but she didn't want Waverly to think everything was okay if she took a moment to comfort her. The last comment made her feel too guilty.
"Are you okay? You should put ice on that, come on." She put a hand on Waverly, who seemed off balance, and guided her downstairs to the kitchen.
All that Nicole found in her freezer was a bag of frozen veggie mix. "Here you go." She walked over to the lounge where she'd sat Waverly down, and got her to hold it against her head. "I thought you went home," she said quietly.
"I told you I wasn't going anywhere and I meant it," Waverly replied. She turned her head to look at Nicole and winced.
"You could've slept on the couch though, dummy," Nicole teased with a smile at the brunette. She couldn't help but feel a surge of love towards her after seeing her hurt. "How do you feel? Do you need to see a doctor?"
"I don't think so. I'll be fine," Waverly said as she looked around the room with a weird look on her face. "Is this your house?"
"I think I should take you up to hospital. You probably have a concussion. I'll get dressed, okay? You stay here and stay awake."
Nicole was back in under five minutes, dressed in jeans and a sweater. She pulled her coat on and then helped a yawning Waverly into her own.
"I feel dizzy and really sleepy," Waverly admitted. She looked at Nicole who had just grabbed her car keys. "Are you going somewhere?"
"Yes and you're coming with me."
"No no. My head hurts, Nicky, and I just want to sleep."
"I know, baby, but you need to see a doctor."
She steadied her girlfriend with an arm around her waist and slowly walked them outside to the car. Nicole kept asking her questions to keep her awake as she helped her buckle her seatbelt.
"Should I call Wynonna?"
"No. I'm fine."
"Waves, you've got a concussion and maybe worse."
"I don't want to worry her over something this silly. And I don't want her to see us fight."
"Then we won't. We can talk about all of that when you're feeling better. Wynonna will kill me if I don't call. Can you call and put it on speaker, please?"
Waverly gave in and called her older sister from Nicole's phone, putting it on speaker as requested. Wynonna picked up right away.
"Hey, Haught! What's up?"
"Waverly is okay, but she hurt her head. I'm taking her up to the hospital now. I think she's definitely got a concussion, probably nothing more than that."
"Shit. What happened?"
"I just bonked my head on the floor, I umm fell. It's nothing," Waverly answered. "I don't need a doctor."
"Listen to Nicole, Waverly," Wynonna's voice crackled from the phone. "I'll meet you there."
Waverly groaned and hung up the phone. A few minutes later they pulled up outside the emergency room entrance where they could see Wynonna standing nearby. She brightened up at the sight of the police cruiser and rushed over to open the passenger side door as the tall redhead got out of the driver seat. Waverly stumbled the moment she was on her feet. Wynonna supported her on one side as Nicole joined them and held her other side up. The trio walked awkwardly inside like this.
"Damn, Waves. You must've fallen hard."
Waverly just grumbled at her sister and sat down on a hard plastic chair while the other two spoke to the nurse at the desk. Wynonna joined her a couple minutes later with a cup of water. Nicole sat beside her girlfriend and worried that this was all her fault.
